    Chapter 21

Duccius stayed for an additional seven days. He had to make one more hunting trip. He came back after two days, with several rabbits. Later the boys told me they took him to a new spot where they knew there would be no deer or boar. “There are bears, but we did see any.” I was sad and happy Duccius was leaving. We could get back to normal, but I’ll miss him. Life return to what I consider normal. I needed to go to Rome. We loaded the cart with fruit. One of the boys asked if we co

Kev, go back and re-read chapter 1. I have corrected it to lniclude what I had inadvertently left out. Thanks for bringing this to my attention

Yes, you are right, Duccius needs to become his own man.

    Chapter 20

That won't happen, Roman laws would take effect in which the oldest son inherits the family estate. Appias would take Lucinius to court and probably win. Lucinius has his own Villa and doesn't need another. I think his Villa is probably more productive than his grandfather's in the south.

    Chapter 20

I enjoy your comments and at times I feel sorry for you. This story must touch you in those hidden places in your mind. But as angry we get at Appias, we are old that Lucinius has done so well. He has proven his intelligence to his grandfathers' delight.

    Chapter 20

Good begets good. Lucinius is being awarded for freeing his slaves. He has employed a basic knowledge, treat people well and they will respond. His father never learned that.

    Chapter 20

I think Duccius has a deep love for his father, after all he was tutored by his father and they were close while he was growing up. It would be hard for Duccius to go against his father. But I do agree, in many ways Lucinius is more mature than Duccius. Brains over brawn

    Chapter 20

The next morning I showed up in the clothes I wore when I worked in the grove and vineyard. Felix looked at me, "Are you okay?" "Yes, Sir, you are dressed for work." "Yes, the trees and vines still need attention, guest or not. If they asked, tell them I had already eaten and I needed to get back to tending the grove and vineyard." He smiled, Calliope heard, and she smiled. I wondered if mother freed her, would she stay or not. My guess with my father, she would leave. She might g

    Chapter 19

The boys show what freedom they have. I think they all admire Lucinius and work hard to please him. They are treated better than they ever thought possible. To get a share of the profits, only makes them work harder. This concept isn't fully absorbed today. Only some firms have profit sharing. When I read these scrolls, I often wonder what would have happened if the South treated their slaves this way.

    Chapter 19

Instead of enjoying his son's achievements he finds the time to make a statements that will try and bring Lucinius' s mood down. There are people who think their way is the only way and no matter how many successful ways are developed, theirs is the best. Die hards to their death, closed minds. Re,monds me of a saying, "Their mind is constipated"

    Chapter 19

Lucinius put up with his father for his mother. He was very close to her since he was disowned by his father. You can always put up with someone when you know they will be leaving soon.

You are probably right. Although they have it pretty good on the Villa.

I don't think Dad will change, he has many years of hatred in his heart, except for heart surgery, that heart will remain black.

    Chapter 19

Great and I wish you another 19 plus years. Lucinius will always try and teach his father. But you can't keep bumping your head against a stone wall. Sooner or later he will write his father off. Unfortunately he will miss his mother

    Chapter 19

At breakfast, we were missing Duccius, Niciu, Deacon, and four of the boys. I looked at Felix, “They came down early. They asked that I fix some food for them to take with them. I packed some bread, cheese, and boiled eggs. Your brother had a flask he filled with water.” I smiled, he would have fun, but more importantly, he accepted them as friends and not slaves. I sat in the courtyard with Aumen, eating one of Felix’s cakes, when the rest of the group struggled in. Sitting on the lounges,

And barren as well. Isolated and lonely, not a happy place. The god Mars, is the god of war. With such a disposition, Appias might get a chance to be his slave.

    Chapter 18

It is sad when a son looks upon his father with a distance. I was close to my father and I learned a lot from him. Lucinius had to learn from his grandfathers and for him, that was a plus.

Appias should have been proud of Lucinius but with all those years of hatred, I don't think anything Lucinius accomplishes will change the way he thinks.

    Chapter 18

I think it would be hard fro Appias to ever change his mind. Years of hate can't new dispelled so easily. I think he is ill but more mentally than physically.

His father is ill but not of the body. I wonder if he will make peace with Lucinius

    Chapter 18

I don't think Duccius will treat his father's slaves as Lucinius does. Living in the city is different than living in the country. You are right about the deal breaker

Yes, this is the first time they are all together. I wouldn't bet on his father changing his disposition.
