Oh, how very well said: She smoozes people to get what she wants and takes advantage. If Rick were less gentle, he might react with more than sullen annoyance. But then, he wouldn’t be himself, either. Sadly, he wouldn’t be who he is without his self-hatred, too. I’m glad you liked Marta. She brightened my writing in this chapter. Thank you very much for reading this and for your thoughts.

I tried to think of the most annoying possible nickname she could devise. I guess it worked. Rick is gentler than either you or I might be. But she certainly knows how to grate on Rick’s nerves! Thanks for your thoughts and for reading!

Thank you very much for your insights and thoughts. I’m glad you continue to read this story. Rick’s fee was low, certainly. Maybe he just knew that kind of furnace well. If he comes to your door, it helps if he knows your plumbing, I guess. Again, thank you.
  4. Thank you for taking up this story, and for your very kind reflections. Rick and Jerry have been friends for years, and I’m glad I could show that convincingly. They are fun to write.

You’re most kind in your comments. I’m very grateful you read this chapter. Rick hasn’t had it easy. His current existence is the place where the path of least resistance led. I’m glad you’re interested in his story.

The old lodge seemed friendlier on this occasion. It helped that there was an interested teen and a friendly smile. And yes, Rick is a pushover - just a token charge for a few minutes’ work. Thanks so much for reading, and for your comments .

No, Rick hasn’t been celibate. But it’s also true he’s never formed any attachments. Until Marshall, Rick found sex to be more pain than pleasure. I’m very glad you liked this chapter. Thank you very much for reading!

Thank you for your thoughts. Jerry is probably just blind to how his comments might feel to someone who has been a fixture in his life for decades. When they’ve been trading jokes and zingers for that long, they might forget how much a badly aimed arrow can hurt. I’m so glad you read this chapter, still more happy you took time to comment.

Whew! That’s quite a difference. Maybe he’d travel just to see the beach.

Rick could have his reasons for such a small charge. But you’re quite right that in many areas one antes up more for a plumber than what Rick quoted.

Rita is more than a hazard, that seems certain. I’m not sure I answer her phone calls either. I’m very glad you liked meeting Marta, and that your sympathies are with Rick. Thank you for reading this chapter.

I’m willing to be wrong, certainly. Rick might have reasons for charging so little. Anyway, thanks for reading, and for your comment.

You are most kind in your comments. Rick hasn’t had things easy. He needs all the encouragement he can get. I’m glad you liked this chapter; thanks very much for reading it, and for your thoughts.

You put your finger on Rita’s worst habit; not just stretching boundaries, but shredding them. Still, she seems like a force to be reckoned with. Thanks so much for reading this chapter.

Seeing as Rick appears to have a heart of gold, he might be excused for charging so little. It might be he enjoyed talking with an interested teen; perhaps he’s hoping to get called back; or maybe he’s hoping to charge Rita for more. I’m glad you saw some promise in this chapter. Thank you very much for reading!
  16. "Sorry, running a little late this morning." Rick apologized as he slid into the well-worn leatherette seat of the diner's booth. Jahnke's South Shore Diner was a good place for breakfast, and the usual seven o'clock locals had the place bustling. The early summer visitors would crowd in after nine o'clock, having risen late and showered, when they would begin feeling distinctly brunch-like. "You’re not late, just not exactly on time." Jerry Guttmacher grinned back. "Late night?"

    Chapter 18

Well done, Alice. Excellent work, Shayna. These women showed just how weak and vulnerable Fergus can be. Soon, perhaps the pack will send Fergus packing.
  18. You are very kind to read and comment on this. I’m glad it made your world brighter.
  19. Thanks very much for reading this one. It’s short, but I hope the light shines in it.
  20. The sun in its arc gives light to love and life. I’m glad this came through here, and that you enjoyed this. Thanks for reading!
  21. If you can hear these things, then I am also content. I’m very glad you took time to read this. Thank you.
  22. Thank you so very much for having a look at this. I’m grateful for your thoughts.
  23. That lilt, that song-like feel is exactly what the mark at which I aimed. Thank you for saying that. And many thanks for reading!
  24. I will come to you at morning, your light playing on my frame; your warmth undressing, bright smile caressing, and no color is the same when I come to you at morning. You will follow me at midday to a soft, sweet gasped surprise; my body burning, full hearted yearning for what you ask with your eyes when you follow me at midday. I will kiss you in the evening, reawaken what is still; yet re-inviting
  25. I continue to enjoy this tale. It’s sad to see what’s happened to Boone, and to the people who had the misfortune to come in contact with Will. Coy can’t or won’t see things as Boone does. It’s good to see Boone having hope for a new start. I hope his farewells to Coy are easy, so he can get started before winter.
