"Okay! Try the hot water now!" Rick shouted up the stairs from the basement where he'd been working. He heard the faint hiss of water running in the kitchen sink above. He waited. "It's working! Oh, that's great!" Rick nodded and allowed himself a small smile. "Let it run for a minute or so, then you can shut it off," he called out. "Sure thing. You bet." The female voice above sounded pleased. Rick gathered up his tools, and the old, worn-out pipe section that had b

You have Rita’s picture perfectly outlined; she steamrollers with her stream of words, and bulldozes others’ sensibilities like grass and trees at a building site. Rita certainly has a lot on her mind, and unfortunately, Rick seems to be part of it. I’m glad you enjoyed this chapter, and I’m very grateful for your comments.

The awakening and reckoning now begin. Sawyer knows much of the truth, and may be ready to admit the largest truth: that he cannot do without Jimmy. You show us how much Jimmy loves and cares for Sawyer. How can he tell his mate that he has only a few weeks left to live? And just to let you know we’ve not forgotten, who was the rogue?

If this leaves you feeling empty, or hollow, then these lines succeeded in their aim. Like you, I prefer warmth and personality. Thank you for reading, and for commenting.

Thank you for reading this, and for commenting on it. It seems like an experience, but one that is emptied of connection and warmth. I am glad you felt the last skyscraper conveyed this.

The more I use the form, the more adaptable it becomes to conveying feelings and actions. It's as if one tells the course of the hours in black-and-white photographic snapshots. Thank you for your very kind words and encouragement, and especially for reading this Wolkenkratzergedichte.

I'm wondering if he's not inhabiting my subconscious. Thank you for reading!

Thank you very much for taking time to read this and for your comments on it. The story is terribly commonplace, yet I am glad the story arc was apparent. If it evoked emptiness and sterility, then it must have hit its mark. Once again, my thanks.

Thank you very much for your thoughts on this. I'm glad the story came through; sometimes one is tempted to overthink things. Yes, this too reminds me of Rick.

It's one thing to understand oneself, and quite another to advertise, allowing one's deepest desires to be handled like produce or meat at the market, compared critically for quality. Impatient for any reaction, anticipating an inquiry, or yet perhaps an impromptu invitation, idle fingers fidget without aim, hoping for a message on the screen. Three hard knocks upon a stranger's door, feet unsure of th

I suppose I shouldn't spoil things, but if you go back and read the final chapter of Predator Prey, you may get just a glimpse of Andy and Zander at the beach.

You were very kind to read this story, and to comment so generously. I have had some sequel material in mind for some while now, though too many blank spots need resolution before I embark on writing something down. There is always in my mind the fear that no kind of follow-up story would ever live up to the original. The snapshots I've done of follow up stories have Zander and Andy appearing either as main characters or tangentially. You can find them as "Observations." You're very nice in giving me until 2027 to get the sequel underway. Gee, only seven years to go... Thanks again. P

You got to the end of the journal! I'm so very glad you did. Thank you very much for your comments, and for reading all the way through. There are several snapshots - short pieces - in which Andy and Zander appear, sometimes as main characters, sometimes tangentially. You can find them because they bear the word "Observation" in the title. Perhaps you might enjoy them, too. I cannot promise you a scene in which the principal and James F. Ackerman get their just rewards, alas. But you have my thanks for reading, and for your thoughts.

Chapter 6 Cloudy Thinking
Parker Owens commented on Headstall's story chapter in Chapter 6 Cloudy Thinking
It seems these two are still thinking through the clouds that blind them. Perhaps their paths will cross again, perhaps not. It's sad they must part, but these appear to be different paths they've chosen. What adventures lie ahead? Tell us next week?- 72 comments

Such beauty in the way you let Jaxson and Luke play in the moonlit snow. They’re lovely to read about. Luke’s gift made me smile, even more than the “practice child” comment. Thanks for a wonderful chapter.

That sounds excellent to me.

At least you can go on to the next chapter. That’s the advantage of reading completed stories, I suppose. Zander must have been horrified and shocked at what his mother found in the barn. Thanks very much for your comments and for reading.

You made me smile this morning.

Andy, as he now calls himself, is a survivor. He has spent this journey further developing those skills which kept him alive with his father. His attraction to Lunch Boy frightens him, as it could undo his defenses which keep him going. I’m glad you reacted as you did. The Andy’s of this world need people who will celebrate small delights with them. Thanks again for reading.

Thanks very much for this comment!

Toby had no idea about how the redhead hurt Eric. You're right that Eustace misread the situation because Eric is an Anderson. Despite that reputation, Eustace surely seems concerned for Eric. I am very glad you are reading Eric's journal. Thank you.

I liked your take on what Rita wants to do. Change is difficult, and she wants to accelerate it, at NASA rates. You point out great reasons why her pitch might attract Rick, too. Thank you for reading, and for your thoughts!

Rick’s menu choice sounded pretty good to me, too. Rita seemed very much wrapped up in her own thoughts and priorities to pay attention to Rick. You’re right that she sounds bitter. That’s a real red flag. I’m glad you managed to stomach this chapter; the last scene was just a soupçon of sweet to round things out. Thank you for reading and commenting.

I’m sure by this time, Rick would prefer to be working in the Meadowview’s grease trap rather than at a table with Rita. However, he feels this is the way to make sure customers are kept happy and the reputation of his business is solid. You’re right about the piano teacher putting a smile on his face, and sending Rita to the back of his brain for a while. Thank you very much for reading!
