Just little stopover at the sawmill? The whine of the sawblades... Seriously, thanks very much for reading.

Rick has had years to deal with his experience with Willy Kohler. Time may heal, but that doesn't mean scars won't be left behind. Thanks very much for reading!

    La Calunna

As we get older, our memories seem to trap friends, students, and acquaintances into the age at which we first knew them. I meet students I taught years ago, and for at least a moment, they appear to be seventeen years old again. As for Willy's willy, lumber is his family's business. I wouldn't want him to hang out around too long at the sawmills.

You are so right, and thank you for your comments. It's possible to get better, to find some degree of healing, but it can take a very long time. Rick has a place and a kind of stature in his community, but real peace has eluded him.

Thank you for reading through this chapter. You are most kind to comment.
  6. Apollo and Colt will be working long, intense hours. Both men, through connections to farm or family businesses, may be perhaps inured to it. Thanks for letting us see this at the inception.
  7. The title for this chapter spoke volumes. I enjoyed reading about the formation and building of WOOF. I also liked he word affairette. That's a new one, but an immediate hit.
  8. "What the hell is going on here?" The sound of Oskar Kohler's voice had been running through Rick's brain lately – ever since his trip out to Cedarcrest. The echoes of it disturbed his sleep and infiltrated his brain at work. Only two people knew the real story. The whole truth. Rick wasn't about to tell what Willy had done to him, and the older boy wasn’t about to say anything about it either. But the older boy shamelessly laid the blame for the empty bottles and the mess on t

    Chapter 17

I’m not going to fling theories about. I’m only going to congratulate you and describing the unbearable tension between two wills of iron centered on one justifiably anxious man. This was masterfully done.
  10. Now that you mention it, the sensory feedback from the title does make me blink, and maybe smirk. You are very kind in your comments on these lines; I suspect my eyes will not be the only ones to read them.
  11. I’m most grateful you took time to read these, and possibly sniff the air for memories.
  12. Thank you Gary. I’m glad these brought good memories to you.
  13. I'm very happy these brought memories out for you - good ones, I hope. Thank you so much for reading them, and for letting their fragrances bring recollection's smiles.
  14. I am glad you liked these. Now, do you have matches?
  15. Cardamom makes me remember you as I grind its seeds ever finer, releasing long forgotten scents and fantasies which linger on my tongue's memory; filling my moments with sweet perfume. Turmeric, with cumin together, reminds my nostrils of the sunshine kissing your skin by the end of an afternoon -- one spent laughing and working dark soil, preparing the seeds for our warm bed. Cinnamon twitches at my senses like hairs tickling my nos
  16. Small towns can be embracing and welcoming, or scandalized and offended. Colton’s little town will take a long, long time to be a real home for everyone. It’s sad that it will come way too late for Colton; maybe in time for Poppy’s children. I wonder if Sam will ever visit New York.
  17. Boone’s right about one thing: someone may be arriving soon to take out on Coy the wrong his brother might have done. Coy can’t afford to be drunk and maudlin, or he’s likely to wind up dead. By tomorrow, Coy will probably have a massive headache and no memory of this excellent conversation.

    Running On Empty

Thanks for what you write, and even more for what you’re doing. My heart is with you.
  19. What a wonderful start to getting to know these two better. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Chapter 10

The letter seems compelling. Let’s hope he gives Ali a chance to explain, to tell a story that convinces Jamie, the ultimate skeptic.

Thank you very much for reading this chapter. I’m glad you could see as Rick did. It is indeed an awful memory, and it clearly haunts Rick as effectively as any specter could.

Thank you for reading this difficult chapter. If you could sense some of what Rick lived through, then his reluctance to set foot in Cedarcrest again could be understood. His memories clearly have a lot of weight still.
  24. I’m enjoying discovering this world and watching the story unfold
