    Chapter 3

Go Your Own Way Chapter 3 Over the next few days, I didn’t see much of Kelly; he and his partner were wrapped up in a big project, their first major design job was being installed, and I had a bunch of those errands to do that are necessary after a move. I had to get the utilities switched to my name from the property managers, get the internet installed, stock the pantry, make a trip to my new employer, a commercial construction company, to fill out paperwork...all the fun stuff. By the e

    Chapter 2

My first apartments were almost entirely furnished with hand me downs, so I had never had to start from complete scratch. After my apartment flooded during Katrina, though, I lost everything. Replacing my possessions, I got a taste of what's it like to start from nothing. I mean I'd reach for a broom and remember, "Shit....I don't have a broom....let me add it to the list."

    Chapter 2

I honestly picture Joseph as more of a greysexual than a heterosexual, though I think he would disagree.

    Chapter 2

Go Your Own Way Chapter 2 Eyeing my rolled up sleeping bag with disdain, Kelly had offered to let me sleep on his sofa last night. I had assured him that, while I planned to purchase a mattress post haste, I had roughed it in my bag plenty of times and would be fine. Groaning, as I pulled myself up to a sitting position, I realized that while that statement was true, that roughing it had been a while ago, and my bones were regretting my decision. I decided a run would limber me up, as wel

Thanks. If Mr. Brightside is a soap opera, Go Your Own Way is more of a Rom Com.

    Chapter 17

Let's just say that when you learn a bit more of Shane's history between leaving school and ending up in hospital, I think you'll understand his cynicism. And I promise you'll get the whole story of Nikolai. And you may get your wish about Denise.

    Chapter 17

Thanks for reading. While I'm having fun with all the suspense/soap opera trappings, at heart, I'm trying to write the story of Jason's coming out. And part of that is his trying to be more honest and authentic. Plus, Shane is the guy he loves, and Jason thinks he's ruined Shane's life. So if Shane wants an answer, Jason going to give it to him, and it will be the real answer. Besides, a pet peeve of mine as a reader is when a simple 5 minute conversation that most actual humans would have immediately and that would resolve a major conflict doesn't occur until after an additional 25 chapters of pure filler. And as for as the unknown; I do have the "why"s and "who"s of the story worked out; in fact, I've been writing the final scene for a while. I just need to figure out a few more of the "how"s.

    Chapter 17

Mr. Brightside Chapter 17 After leaving Shane’s apartment, Jason was feeling unsettled and anxious to get back to the peace of his own home. Unfortunately what he found there was chaos. His front door was gone and off to the side, workers were painting what he assumed was the replacement. More painters were busy inside, as well as people installing the new alarm and burglar bars. Diana, still looking as crisp and unrumpled as that morning, met him at the apartment’s entrance. “Hi, Jaso

    Chapter 1

Well, drought, I've some bad news for you. It's honestly a pretty cliched story. I'm new to writing, so I'm not ready to transcend the m/m romance genre quite yet. Right now I'm focusing on trying to not misspell words, keeping internal consistencies, and creating believable dialogue and atmosphere. One day, I do hope to leave cliches and tropes aside, but, for better or worse, today is not that day.

    Chapter 1

Go Your Own Way Chapter 1 No one still writes letters. No one but my mother, that is. I guess it’s the former English teacher in her. Ever since childhood, if I was away from her for more than a few days, a letter would follow. Her letters have followed me to 4-H camp, the hospital, and to college. Hell, they have even followed me to the Middle East, South America, and the various other places I worked as a construction engineer for the U.S. Department of State. Her latest letter had

  13. Thanks so much for this story. It's been thoroughly enjoyable. This chapter was especially great with the third party views being entertaining in and of themselves before you hit us with the cliffhanger. It's been a while since I've been so worried about a fictional character.

    Chapter 16

Thanks for reading! #1. This was originally one chapter, but it got so long, I decided to split it into two. Therefore, most of the second chapter was written when I posted 15. #2. I didn't mean to post it quite so soon, but I screwed up the delayed posting and decided to just let it ride.

    Chapter 16

Mr. Brightside Chapter 16 Jason felt chills running down his spine. He was paralyzed, feeling like a ghost had arrived to haunt him. Was he to be visited by all the sins of his past? But a quick glance at Shane reassured him. Meeting Shane again had been a good thing, a new chance. Maybe this would be his opportunity to make things right with Thomas, the other person he had wronged. “Thomas McAlpin?” Shane asked, sounding confused. The sound of his voice brought Jason out of his reve

    Chapter 15

most of the next chapter is finished....it was originally going to be part of this chapter, but it all got so long that I decided to split it into two chapters. and I struggled with how much of the father and mother's back stories and characterization to include. I finally decided to filter them through Jason and how much or how little he actually understands of them (and since poor Jason is pretty clueless about life in general, it's not much)

    Chapter 15

Jason's mother is much like someone I know in real life who has based her life on conforming to the standards of her community: she does things she resents and dislikes because she "should" and doesn't do things she would like because she "shouldn't." She was convinced that if she did what everyone considered the right thing, life would work out wonderfully (it didn't). Jason's mother is the same, and thinks that if Jason dissapoints the expectations of society it will actually have negative impacts of his life. She genuinely thinks his only real path to happiness is the classic go to college, get good job, marry nice girl, and have children. I promise that the next few chapters will reveal more about Shane and Thomas's relationship, as well as some of Shane's experiences after leaving school.

    Chapter 15

Mr. Brightside Chapter 15 “Shane is waking up.” The nurse’s words pierced Jason’s morning befuddlement, and he was instantly alert. “He’s awake?” Oh my god,” he shouted, jumping up from the sofa bed, and nearly tripping himself in a tangle of blankets. “Slow down and calm down,” Laurie said. “He’s not awake yet; the process is just beginning. It will take several hours before he’s coherent. It’s not like the movies where his eyes pop open, and it’s all okay. We’ll be in here monitoring

    Chapter 14

This story, since I started posting without completing it, has evolved over what I originally intended, which was a basic roommates/tragedy ensures romance. But, even though this is a melodramatic version of it, I kind of wanted to pursue the idea that how our lives turn out are this bizarre combination of our own decisions and the effect of things outside our control. And how often these outside forces are the things we never even thought to worry about. And as far as Denise: Jason didn't deliberately pick a hard core Evangelical. In that part of the country, a huge portion of the population is Evangelical. However, Jason, a casual church goer whose religious beliefs don't have a major impact on him didn't realize how much religion meant to Denise. It's like a casual drinker (the occasional glass of wine with dinner or happy hour with co-workers) who thinks that most people who drink have the same sort of relationship with alcohol goes on vacation with a heavy drinker who starts breakfasts with mimosas and keeps going until passing out and is startled because they didn't realize other people really drank that much. Jason liked Denise because she was pretty and blond and convenient.

    Chapter 14

The deal with Jason and his father is one of those double edged sword things. His father's hands off, mind your own business code is good on one hand in that he isn't too concerned with other people's morality; on the other hand, it also means that he has always operated at a distance from Jason. Jason himself has no real idea what his dad thinks about various things because his father has not felt the need to share his opinion about things that are not their business.
