I'd like to think I excel at writing characters you'd like to punch in the face. From my point of view, I thought Aiden's mom handled the situation as best she could. From the initial shock to just wondering what her son's gotten himself into, to seeing there's really something there that might be good for him. And then there's Dougie... Yeah, who knew that quiet anxious young man was a completely different person in bed? (Well, I did, but you know...)

I think you'll find this story is as much a story about the boys and their fathers as it is about the love story. George has his moments, and he truly loves this strange young man who has taken the place of his little boy.

I couldn’t believe I was on a date with two seniors. Doug and Dustin had picked me up at my house around seven o’clock and we went bowling. Dustin was a really good bowler, even though he said he was rusty. After bowling we went to Eat’n Park in Belle Vernon for a late dinner. Doug insisted on paying for everything. I was starting to get nervous as Doug drove us back to Dustin’s place. I wasn’t entirely sure what was going to happen during the after-dinner portion of the evening. They could have

I seem to remember Brett getting a lot of hate during his spoiled "Brat Reilly" phase. At least he turned out okay! I must say it has been fun to only experience Billy from afar. He's just out there doing his thing, oblivious (as usual) to what's going on around him. The scene where they end up seeing each other across the cafeteria is as close as they get, and they're separated by this chasm - living in two different worlds. As for Aiden's mom - Well, I had to have at least one parent who wasn't a fuck-up at some point! (Even St. George slapped the bejeezus out of Billy that one time.) Of course, Aiden just sees her as trying to ruin his whole life. He really has no idea. We'll see how stalwart Aiden is about that "just friends" thing very soon!

That's the vibe I've been going for with Aiden. He's on the fence, trying to figure out what's right and listening to the wrong people. He doesn't want to be a bad guy, but he keeps digging himself in deeper.

It's been interesting for me to try to both tread through places we've been before and offering something fresh and new as well. It's a balancing act, that's for sure. We're about to dig in deep into Mr. Hartley soon enough, maybe explore what makes a man with so much potential turn to schemes and hatred.

There's that fine line between someone just working through their stuff or that person just being toxic. Toxic people aren't ever going to get better, sometimes they won't even try. But if someone is just trying to figure things out and making mistakes along the way, then there's hope.

As long as it's not that they are unlikable to the point of not caring, and therefore not enjoying and reading. Billy and Brett had their moments too, but by the time they happened we were already a few books into the story and we could relate to them. You always knew Billy was at least trying to be a good person, even if he had no idea how to do it sometimes. Aiden though...

He does make his share of trouble for himself, doesn't he?

Jealousy, anger, hatred... All powerful fuel for venting at someone who has no idea who you are or why you're upset. But in typical Billy fashion, he just moves along without giving it much thought, ignoring the threat until it's too late.

Dustin's dark side is a scary place to be, and to have someone actively manipulating him and feeding the darkness? Yikes!

Always remember the boys are being manipulated behind the scenes. Look at where Dustin was looking in the scene where he rejected Aiden - the symbol of his greatest accomplishment, one he feels was made possible only by the only person who he feels understands him and is looking out for him - the father he never had, Mr. Hartley. And during Dustin's "I don't know what I want" speech, how he paced back and forth between the object of his desire and the prize for his obedience to Mr. Hartley. It's not just his emotions which are ripping him apart, but the schemes of his mentor.

Aiden's gotten himself in over his head, that's for sure. For Dustin, he thought Aiden was going to be a bit of fun, but turns out he got in too deep as well! Once Aiden thought he understood the rules, Dustin revealed that "knight" side of himself and changed direction.

I hope I haven't created characters so unlikeable that people don't want to read the story. Have I reveled in the dark side a bit too much with this one?

I try to keep it real, even with an over-the-top character like Mr. Hartley or Dustin. Their motivations and actions are relatable, even if we wouldn't do what they do ourselves.
