I managed to renew my driving licence online this morning. I needed to scan in the official Medical Report Form that my doctor filled in yesterday, and upload it as part of the online process. I got an email from the National Driver Licence Service, sent just before 6:00pm, to say that everything is in order and they will post a new driving licence out to me.
They do warn that it may be as long as 15 working days (3 weeks) before it arrives. Apparently mail can take that long just at the moment, due to Covid. I'm not sure, but I suspect the Post Office may be quarantining mail after receiving it, before actually delivering it on. I'll print out the email and keep it in the car - just in case I get stopped by the Gardaí (Irish police) in the meantime, and need to show them my licence.
Interesting thing is that, although I don't have to pay for the new licence (because I am over 70), my doctor charged me €40 for the medical exam and filling out the form. Even though I have a Medical Card, which should mean I get to see him for free. Apparently, this medical examination (for the driving licence) is not covered by the medical card.
Also, because I'm now over 70, I have to renew my driving licence every three years.
