    Decline and Fall

The shadows were lengthening now; the sun slipping out of sight beyond the rim of the Bowl a little earlier each day. It was still warm, though. Summer was clinging on this Turn. All twelve of the weyrling pairs had taken their places around half way up the ancient rock fall at the far end of the Bowl. Today was the first time they’d fly on board their own dragons. Herebeth was as excited as D’gar. He’d watched his dragon perfect his flying skills alone, practising circuits and turns, take o

    A Family Visit

I figured it was going to start fairly soon after they came forward, especially when people didn't behave in the same deferential way as they used to.

    Concerns

He's a lot more approachable than F'lar generally, plus people are more inclined to talk to him.
  5. Eighth Interval/Ninth Pass History At the beginning of the Ninth Pass of the Red Star, there is only one remaining Weyr of dragons - Benden Weyr, in the north east of the continent. All of the other five Weyrs have been empty and abandoned since just after the end of the Eighth Pass, when all of the inhabitants - dragons, riders and weyrfolk - disappeared overnight. No-one knows what happened to them. Normally, Thread falls every 200 Turns. However, 400 Turns have gone by since the end of t

  7. Really interesting and well told story. I have to admit I love these kind of 'timeslip' stories. Caleb and Ben adapted really well to living in the early 20th century. I wonder if other people had made their way through that portal in other ages? I did wonder if the town doctor was going to turn out to be someone from the future as well.

    Chapter 1

It was intended as just a one chapter short story, but you've got me thinking now...
  9. The old house stood a little way back from the main road, surrounded by a high brick wall. Joe passed it on the way to school each morning and when he walked back from the bus stop with his friends Paul and Rob in the afternoons. The iron gates had long since been wired shut, and a lopsided, graffiti-covered notice announced that trespassers would be prosecuted. 'Now that would be a cool place to go on Halloween,' Rob said. Paul agreed, but then he always agreed with Rob. Joe wasn't so s
  10. Three kids. A spooky old house. Halloween. They should have paid more attention to those horror movies.
  11. I shall watch out for small people wearing 'alien costumes' this Halloween!

    Misunderstandings

Yes, he's listening too much to what his clutchmates have been telling him and not enough to his own heart.
  13. After visiting J’rud a second time, D’gar invited some of the Wing up to his weyr, then ordered more wine and ale for them all. He realised that he wanted H’rek to walk in and see that he was able to have a good time whether he was there or not. Yet as evening fell and it became dark outside, there was still no sign of him. Several times, he pondered asking Herebeth to bespeak Rioth, but some stubborn part of him was determined that he’d not be the one to make the first move. The argument had be

    Benden Weyr

Part of the problem with H'rek's training was that he was at Southern, rather than Benden Weyr. There weren't that many experienced riders there to provide training and I’m guessing that, given the circumstances, they concentrated more on practical stuff relating to Threadfighting. Also, Benden's Weyrlingmaster, C'gan had just died in the first Threadfall and they probably didn’t get around to replacing him until they had another clutch on the sands at Benden. Lessa didn't get much info on mating flights either, other than 'don't let Ramoth overeat.'

    The Big Move

Yes, otherwise the big secret wouldn’t have remained that way for long!

    Summer Flights

I agree, but we get some of that attitude in canon too. I guess they would say he should have taken the option to ask for a restricted flight. Trouble is, he felt pressured into not doing that because of his age.
  19. Back in the days when I used to run training sessions, I always tried to put in jokes or little stories to illustrate the importance of something. It really does help people to remember, especially when it’s a technical subject.
  20. Part of the reason I started writing the story was to tell the other side of the story from the point of view of the riders who come forward.
  21. Weyrs and Weyr Life Six Weyrs are spaced throughout the norther continent of Pern, each each covering its own area against Thread and receiving tithes from the Holds under its protection. They are Fort, Benden, High Reaches, Telgar, Ista and Igen. The Weyrs are situated well away from holds and are based in the craters of extinct volcanos. Each Weyr has a configuration of stones known as Star Stones. These are aligned in such a way to allow for the prediction of the start of a Pass, which is c

    Second Time Around

Absolutely. It all turned out well for them in the end, hatching-wise.

    40th Anniversary

Great start, with an unexpected twist at the end of the chapter.
  24. That's right, I’d forgotten about that. I think it's usually blue dragons who are most likely to have this ability, although brown Canth is also pretty good at picking out likely candidates. Weyr life and customs will be covered in the next chapter!
  25. Not sure whose idea it was originally, but I think the idea is that white shows up well, so that the clumsy young dragons are more likely to spot the candidates rather than knocking them over. Doesn't always work that way, though! As far as I know, there aren't any gay dragons in canon. Certainly, you'd expect there might be as attraction to mates of their own gender has been seen in almost every species.
