Unfortunately for D'gar and H'rek, the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman have a different sense of priorities than they do. Lessa's main priority is to get Kylara out of her Weyr and they are both determined to re-open Southern before anyone else has the same idea now that it's known that the southern continent is habitable. The fate of a couple of ordinary riders does not loom large in their plans. Yes, they are stretching the Weyr very thin, but they know more clutches of dragons are on the way and due to the five other Weyrs coming forward they don't now have to worry about protecting the whole of Pern from Thread, just their own area.

Thanks to the exercise sessions, D’gar didn’t have the luxury of sleeping in the following morning. It was in Chapter 11. Hinnarek (as he was) overheard his parents arguing and discovered that his mother had slept with her husband's brother while he was away from the farm. It explained to him why his 'father' had always treated him differently, as he had obviously realised from the timing of the pregnancy that Hinnarek couldn't be his own son.

Kylara not thinking about the consequences of her actions later on in canon has disastrous and tragic effects. She doesn't really think about anyone but herself. Poor Prideth.

Know exactly what you mean there. I've experienced much the same in meetings. It's even more annoying when people say they will support you if you raise an issue and then stay silent.

Repeating what others have already written, but the build up of tension in this chapter was well crafted and the breaks between the present and the past in just the right places. The writing is also very visual. I could really see the basement and understand the layout of where all the rooms were situated. A horrible memory, beautifully written.

Herebeth came out of between over the familiar terrain of Fort Weyr; Tooth Crag far below them. Late afternoon sunshine bathed the Weyr in a soft, golden light. By contrast, Benden was leaden grey and black rock amid sharp peaks. Fort looked - gentler - beige, pale brown and amber. Fifteen was the minimum age to stand on the Hatching Sands at Fort Weyr. It wasn’t written in stone, of course. If there were more eggs in a clutch than candidates who had reached the correct age or a hatchling went for someone younger in the audience, no one would hold them back. Generally, a dragon will only go between if their rider dies, although in Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern, some dragons panicked when they could no longer mentally reach riders who were ill with the plague and went between while the riders were still alive, although unconscious.

Traditionally, the day after a mating flight, everyone took it easy. Today was no exception to the rule. Dragons who had taken part were tired, their riders equally so. The Lower Cavern workers had to catch up on all the tasks that had been put aside during the disruption. Glad this story evokes some happy memories. I worked as a projectionist in a couple of 1930's cinemas and even when they had been neglected they had a sense of grandeur and atmosphere you just don't get in a modern multiplex.

At the end of Dragonflight it’s mentioned that they will reopen Southern and by the time Dragonquest begins (7 Turns later) it’s well established, so I’m going on the premise they got down there as soon as they could. Plus it’s a way for Lessa to get shot of Kylara. As for how they manage it when they still have an understrength Weyr coping with Threadfall in the north, well, that's going to take some working out.

If they had an open flight they risk that a bronze from a different Weyr might catch Prideth. Although she's a junior queen, meaning the Weyrleadership isn’t in contention, this would still mess with the Benden bloodlines. Don't think they're that willing to mix with the other five Weyrs yet.

There's an interesting article on Impression on this page: https://www.dragonchoice.com/dragonchoice-ebook-downloads/ Basically, when the dragons were engineered by Kitti Ping, they needed to Impress to a human far more strongly than the fire lizards (who can choose whether or not to stay with their human companions). If dragons could break their Impression, the risks would be too high - you would be in danger of releasing an alpha predator into the wild!
