Back in their weyr, later that evening, D’gar told H’rek what he’d unearthed at High Reaches. He felt very tired by then and longed get some sleep, but H’rek kept asking questions. ‘How can you be certain all this is true? If it’s not in the records…’ ‘Firstly, not everything gets written down. Secondly, even if it does, records can decay. And even if they don’t the writer may have his or her own bias. Thirdly, V’vil and Pilgra both seem to me to be trustworthy. She’s a gold rider, after

This story has really grabbed my attention. Can't wait to find out what happens next.

Herebeth came out of between over the familiar terrain of Fort Weyr; Tooth Crag far below them. Late afternoon sunshine bathed the Weyr in a soft, golden light. By contrast, Benden was leaden grey and black rock amid sharp peaks. Fort looked - gentler - beige, pale brown and amber. Home, he thought, as Herebeth circled slowly, seeming to take as much enjoyment as he did in savouring the view. It helped too, to get the cold of between - and before that, the chill of the records room at High Reach

Dragons most definitely read emotions.

Fifteen was the minimum age to stand on the Hatching Sands at Fort Weyr. It wasn’t written in stone, of course. If there were more eggs in a clutch than candidates who had reached the correct age or a hatchling went for someone younger in the audience, no one would hold them back. However, during a Pass, older boys were generally preferred. No one was allowed to join a Wing until their sixteenth birthday. Anyone who Impressed too early would be forced to wait until they reached that age, which w

Towards the end of the Eighth Pass, two Weyrbred boys wait to see if they will be successful in Impressing a dragon.

Generally, a dragon will only go between if their rider dies, although in Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern, some dragons panicked when they could no longer mentally reach riders who were ill with the plague and went between while the riders were still alive, although unconscious.

Traditionally, the day after a mating flight, everyone took it easy. Today was no exception to the rule. Dragons who had taken part were tired, their riders equally so. The Lower Cavern workers had to catch up on all the tasks that had been put aside during the disruption. Although regular patrols went out as scheduled, they were smaller and stayed out for less time. ‘What if it had been Threadfall today?’ H’rek asked. He and D’gar were sitting out on their ledge, cleaning and mending straps

Glad this story evokes some happy memories. I worked as a projectionist in a couple of 1930's cinemas and even when they had been neglected they had a sense of grandeur and atmosphere you just don't get in a modern multiplex.

At the end of Dragonflight it’s mentioned that they will reopen Southern and by the time Dragonquest begins (7 Turns later) it’s well established, so I’m going on the premise they got down there as soon as they could. Plus it’s a way for Lessa to get shot of Kylara. As for how they manage it when they still have an understrength Weyr coping with Threadfall in the north, well, that's going to take some working out.

If they had an open flight they risk that a bronze from a different Weyr might catch Prideth. Although she's a junior queen, meaning the Weyrleadership isn’t in contention, this would still mess with the Benden bloodlines. Don't think they're that willing to mix with the other five Weyrs yet.

F'drun has a bit of a history with flamethrowers...

There's an interesting article on Impression on this page: https://www.dragonchoice.com/dragonchoice-ebook-downloads/ Basically, when the dragons were engineered by Kitti Ping, they needed to Impress to a human far more strongly than the fire lizards (who can choose whether or not to stay with their human companions). If dragons could break their Impression, the risks would be too high - you would be in danger of releasing an alpha predator into the wild!

Really enjoying this story. Great dialogue and good characterisation.

The Odeon was closing down. It had been a landmark on the High Street for all twenty-six years of Ray’s life and had stood there for as long as anyone could remember. It was a part of the town and a part of his history. Admittedly, it was looking its age these days. The once pristine frontage was stained with pigeon droppings, the entrance flooring was more cracked than whole. The poster frames had been defaced too many times and were covered in smears composed of spit, vomit, or whatever it

With just a few days to go before their cinema closes down, Ray and John try to recover some of its former glory.

Herebeth nudged him, both mentally and physically. Ondiath’s rider wonders when you will be returning. He’d lost track of time, he realised. They hadn’t even got as far as the sleeping chamber, just gone for each other where they’d been standing, amid a couple of bemused dragons. And still the insistent pressure of Prideth’s lust proved that she’d not yet been caught. H’rek leaned against the wall, his eyes shut. D’gar rearranged his clothing and used Rioth’s shoulder to help support himself

He was running into the infirmary, trying to get through all the people crowding around the entrance. Pushing them aside. There were angry protests as he elbowed them out of the way, but he ignored them. There was no time to waste. Suddenly he slipped, losing his balance. He fell heavily to the floor, realising as he did that it was slick with blood. He struggled to get back to his feet, but kept falling. A lake of blood now lapped all around him. Pale hands reached up from the ground, dragg

‘Best get that face seen to, lad.’ R’feem paused on his way around as the riders dismounted and unclipped firestone sacks from fighting straps. ‘Oh.’ He pulled off a glove and felt along his left cheek. It did sting a bit, now that he had time to think about it. ‘And don’t go rubbing char into it. Not if you want to keep your good looks. We’ll meet in two hours, once everyone’s had a chance for a bath and to get into dry clothes.’ You are scored? Apparently. Not badly though.

‘Can tell you’re back with us again today.’ J’rud tucked into his own breakfast as D’gar stared at the bowl of porridge in front of him. The weather this morning was no better than it had proved to be the previous afternoon; worse, in fact, as far as Threadfall was concerned. Heavy rain would be an ally; a sufficient quantity of water drowned Thread before it got to the ground. Instead, they had drizzle, interspersed with brief downpours from the ragged grey cloud that licked around the edges of

She was Brekke, Wirenth's rider. There are a lot of issues between Lessa and Kylara in canon. Lessa has good reason to believe that Kylara has slept with F'lar (and would probably like to do so again). Also, Kylara doesn’t want children but falls pregnant easily whereas Lessa almost dies giving birth to Felessan and can't have any more children.

It was in Dragonquest that they found out the beneficial effects of the grubs. They eat Thread that gets to ground and help the plants to repair themselves if the leaves get scored.

Moving in to the new weyr had gone very smoothly, not least because most of the Wing were keen to see it for themselves once rumour had got around of D’gar’s good fortune. With thirty or so people inside, it seemed far less roomy, although several of them had decided to try out the bathing pool which freed up space in the main living area. ‘More wine, anyone?’ H’rek was carrying a skin around and topping up everyone’s cups. G’reden and T’rai carried more food over from the service shaft.

It's an unfortunate consequence of Impression that you can’t break the bond once it’s made.
