An Unexpected Measurement Walter Briggs was having a perfectly ordinary afternoon. That should have been his first warning. He was working outside, measuring boards for a small repair job, with his two trusty ten-foot measuring tapes nearby. Mutt was the wider, black Black & Decker tape measure. Jeff was older, yellow, and considerably thinner. Although they had different appearances, they had been companions long enough to know practically everything about each other.

I had a feeling something was going to happen to his dad!

He goes into what he calls “idle mode,” where his systems reduce activity and rest while necessary background processes continue. So having his own bedroom gives him a private place to go into idle mode—and makes the house feel more like his home too. And as for that last thought about a family filling up the house someday... 👀 I'm not telling. 😂
