Im wondering if Palomar was deliberately allowing himself to be seen in the light of an active spy, and then ( perhaps deliberately) missing the ships sailing allowed the other spy ( Herrera!) To inveigle himself into Grangers graces and finally to expose him as an abomination in the eyes of His Most Catholic Majesty's. In another story, set in about 2006, 2 teenagers in love from very very wealthy families, older than your group, but the way you express their feelings, hopes, dreams and general failing around, much better in my view.
