So, I'm writing again. I'm sure that'll excite the 2.7 people who remember when I used to post stories here.

I don't think I've had writers block, it's just rare that opportunity and inspiration intersect in my schedule these days. The only reason I'm even writing this week is because I'm recovering from surgery to insert plates in my face. Bad hockey injury, cheekbone broken in three places. Do not recommend.

Anyway, would really appreciate feedback on the prologue I've been working on. I have thirty-two chapters mapped out in Scrivener, so hopefully the words start to flow nicely now that I've figured out the beginning.

    Enjoy!

I've been thinking about getting a tattoo.

That may seem like a strange opening sentence, considering my five-and-a-half year absence from GA, but I guess it'll do. I can always go back and edit it later.

Anyway, back to the tattoo. I've been tossing around the idea of getting a tattoo down my right forearm (my writing hand), with the first line of the very first story that I ever attempted to write on GA. I won't bore you with the details, as I doubt any of you will remember it, but I do like the idea of having a little in-joke tattooed in plain sight. Who knows, maybe I'll even meet my future husband when he walks up to me in the street and asks, "Why do you have 'It all started with a potato' tattooed on your forearm?"

Then I'll be able to tell them all about my mad writing skillz and how I used to write stories for public consumption and oh-my-god-marry-me-you-amazing-attentive-man.

    Anyway, enough of that.

You're probably wondering what I've been up to for the past five-and-a-half years. The answer is: A LOT. Won't bore you with all the details, but here's a pretty reasonable snapshot:

    - Put a deposit on my first house, then withdrew the offer two days later and bought a one-way ticket to London instead.
    - Lived in London for two years. Worked as a barman for a while, then got sick of that and worked as a tax consultant instead.
    - Did the tourist thing. Visited Dubai, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, and Spain.
    - Went to Toronto for Christmas, twice. Flew from London to Toronto to surprise my best friend the first time, slept on her couch for two months the second time. Fell in love with Tim Horton's.
    - Spent a couple of weeks in the States in early 2016. Did the gay pilgrimage to San Francisco, then caught the Amtrak from SF to New York. Spent time in Chicago, DC, and Boston, along the way.

I also marched in my first pride parade in London, which was pretty cool. Almost as cool as the time my live-in landlord terminated my lease because I had a boyfriend (not even joking).

And finally, I did a whole lot of writing. Hours and hours and hours of writing. In coffee shops, in bars, in airports, in aeroplanes, on trains... you name it, I probably wrote in it.

I also joined a writers group in London, and met some of the most insanely talented people on this earth. Critiqued a lot of work, did some public readings of my own, and made some lifelong friends along the way.

...which brings me to what I'm working on. I'm probably sitting on 120,000 words' worth of material right now, all in varying stages of completion. Some of it good, some of it great, some of it absolutely rubbish. Most of you probably won't care, but for the 1.15 of you that do, here's a brief rundown of my two major projects:

    Project 1: Novel-length, coming-of-age, approx 60,000 words in.

Teenage protagonist makes a stupid mistake that almost kills his younger brother, and leads to the breakdown of his best friendship and the separation of his parents. With his closest relationships now in tatters, protagonist begins exploring friendships with two intriguing new characters, one of whom is harboring a dark secret.

Project 2: Novel-length, suspense/thriller, bit dystopian, approx 50,000 words in.

Twenty-something protagonist gets caught up in a biological terror attack on the Tube. Thousands die on the spot, and thousands more fall terminally ill in the aftermath, including our protagonist. Protagonist subsequently learns of an underground casino operating out of a disused Tube station, where the alleged prize on offer is a cure to his disease. We follow the protagonist as he tries to hide his illness and his participation in this dangerous underground casino from his friends and family, while he effectively plays for his life one poker hand at a time.

I might eventually get around to posting project 1, as it involves a gay protagonist. Project 2 is way too hetero for this environment, though.

Anyway, that's enough for my opening blog. Once you've finished rejoicing in the fact that I'm still alive (or simply wondering who the fuck I am), feel free to leave a comment and say hi. Give me some reading recommendations, as well. I've no idea what's good around these parts nowadays.

    Later.

so, my housemate's ex-girlfriend came to visit last night.

she was running early and my housemate was running late, so we ended up hanging out on our own for an hour and a half, watching Back to the Future and having a really intelligent conversation about product placement in Hollywood.

fast forward to now, and my housemate's current girlfriend is sitting on the couch, talking about how funny Will Ferrell is and shouting quotes at the television while watching Step Brothers.

    fuck my life.

so, today is my 25th birthday.

today is also 'R U OK?' Day.

these two facts would be mutually exclusive, except one of my friends inboxed everyone on my Facebook account and told them to ask me 'R U OK?' instead of wishing me a happy birthday.

so now I have 95 wall posts (and counting), all asking if I'm ok.

I also had the following interaction with my mother this morning:

    it was somewhat amusing.

anyway, on the writing front, I can happily say that I sat down and plotted A Shot of Clarity in its entirety last night. frame-by-frame, scene-by-scene. there'll be seven parts to the story (plus Prologue and Epilogue), and they should all be written in pretty quick order.

in terms of its marketability... I'm not sure. I have this dream of completing a longer story and seriously workshopping it within the local writing community, but I feel that the final product will be a weird, in-between length. 10-15k sorta range. too long to be a short story, not long enough to be a novella.

    I'll figure it out, though.

after all, if it's really, really good, who's going to care about its length?

I feel like there's a that's what she said joke in that somewhere.

    maybe another time.

    Peace

    so, I'm still alive.

I feel like that's noteworthy, since I've been somewhat low-profile around here lately.

you might remember, two blogs ago, that I was debating whether or not to quit my job and take a different career direction. in particular, I was debating whether or not to turn down an amazing career opportunity with my current employer and chase a boatload more money elsewhere.

    heavy shit.

anyway, after a solid week of stroking my beard and pondering the mysteries of the universe, I decided to put my morals ahead of my bank balance and take the job with my current employer. I'm still on Struggle St financially, and still earning a shitload less money than what I could get on the open market; but really, how many other 24-year-olds are given the opportunity to build the accounting process for a multi-national corporation? hell, I got to sit on a conference call for an hour and a half this afternoon and tell our systems analysts how I want the accounting reports to be formatted.

    why?

    because that's my job!

having said that, it's not all shits and giggles. we're now in Week 18 of what was supposed to be a four-week User Acceptance Testing project, trying to fix the 1600-or-so problems that have been identified with our new accounting package. that's right, sixteen hundred problems. we're finally nearing the end, though. a couple more weeks and we'll have the whole thing wrapped up. one person who won't be seeing the end though is my old boss. she announced her resignation in Week 13 and departed the company at the end of Week 16. as you can imagine, that was pretty rough for all involved. the worst part was, she did sweet f**k all for her last three weeks and left her replacement with basically zero training and/or preparation for what she was getting herself into.

we managed to avert that crisis, though. being the paranoid control freak that I am, I identified the impending doom about halfway through my boss' last week and basically demanded more control over both the project and my new boss' training plan. so, for the past week, I've been the man charged with bringing my new boss up to speed and generally getting shit in order. things still aren't quite at the point we'd like them to be, but after being basically left in the lurch by my old boss, things are sure as hell a lot better than they could have been.

we'll see how it all turns out over the next few weeks, anyway.

in other news, I dislocated my thumb at basketball a couple of weeks ago. not the most painful injury I've ever had (that award goes to the elbow I dislocated when I was 11), but it took all of my willpower to not swear in front of the 12-year-olds I was coaching. thankfully, it went straight back in, and x-rays later showed that it wasn't broken, but it's still pretty much useless three weeks later. needless to say, I'm not doing a whole lot of typing at the moment.

speaking of, there's not a whole lot happening on the writing front at the moment. it's not like I have writers block or anything, I simply cannot find the time to get anything done. I'll promise you though, when I do find the time, there's a pretty sweet little short story that I'll be putting the finishing touches on. I won't give too much away here, but it may or may not include my very first attempt at writing a sex scene.

speaking of sex, still not getting any. damn it.

I did get myself an iPhone, though.

and finally, I got myself the first three seasons of Castle off a friend's hard drive, because Nathan Fillion is my current obsession.

    what a sweetheart.

anyway, I'm off to watch some Amazing Race: Australia.

if you've taken the time to read all this, do post a comment and say hello..

    peace.

so, what have I been up to since I got suspended from GA?

    well, I went to this:

    ate some of this:

    watched some of this:

    listened to some of this:

and wrote the first 1,000 or so words of a short story that I might need a couple of people to beta-read.

I should be racist more often.
  7. PlugInMatty
    so, I'm quitting my job.

    because I hate it?

    no.

    because I'm bored with it?
    no.
    lack of opportunity?
    no.

then why the hell are you quitting your job?

    because of money.

I'm quitting my job because of money, and I feel like the lowest kind of shit for doing so.

to make things worse, I was pulled into a meeting with my department manager yesterday morning (i.e. my big boss), and offered a job setting up all of the accounting processes for the Australian arm of the Lowe's hardware chain. now that's a pretty f**king big deal. if you're at all familiar with the Lowe's brand, you'll understand just how big a deal that is. but since I'd be on the same salary as my current job in the short-term, and my boss can't guarantee that a more senior position would become available in the mid-term, I'm basically turning it down.

professionally, it's the most amazing opportunity I've ever been given, and I'm turning it down to chase the almighty dollar somewhere else.

seriously, what the f**k am I doing?
I just... I don't understand what I'm supposed to do in this situation.

my #1 priority for the next 5 years is to save money and buy my first house, and I know I can't do that on my current salary. I've crunched the numbers, and I simply cannot make them work. and even though there's this amazing professional opportunity, an opportunity that could basically set me up for the next 5 years of my working life, it's still on a salary that'd slowly sink me into a horrible debt. I know that I'd be in pole position for the next promotion/pay rise that came up within my company, but our staff turnover is so low that I could be waiting 6-12 months before anything even comes up. seriously, we've only had one team leader/manager resign in the whole three and a half years that I've been there, so I know there's no point holding my breath.

but still, 6 months is virtually nothing in terms of my long-term career path. if I can get through those 6-12 months, I'm set. but when you're struggling to make ends meet on your current salary, 6 months is an absolute lifetime. and it's getting the point where I just can't continue to tread the financial path that I've been treading.

    so what do I do?

do I move in with friends and cut my living expenses in preparation for 6-12 months of playing the waiting game, or do I walk away from the company that's given me so much and chase the almighty dollar somewhere else?

for what it's worth, I've already singled out three jobs that I want to apply for. there's a Department of Immigration job that'd earn me at least $15k-$20k more than what I'm currently on, and it's in the same building that one of my best friends already works in. there's also a Property Management job (with an undisclosed salary) that I know I'd enjoy 100%. and then there's a Real Estate sales position that offers a starting salary at least 150% larger than the one I'm currently on. better yet, there's the potential to earn 600% of what I currently earn, as long as I'm not completely shit at it.

after years of struggling to make ends meet, $200,000 per annum is more than I would ever know what to do with.

(what a terrible problem to have)

anyway, now that I've got all that off my chest, what do you think I should do?

I've got a few days to consider whether I want to take the Lowe's job, and I've got until the end of next week to submit an application for all of the other jobs.

oh, and I've already told my big boss that I couldn't accept straight away because I'm considering leaving the company, so pretending this whole thing never happened is not a viable option.

but for what it's worth, he completely understands the position I'm currently in, and supports any decision 100%.

oh, and he smiled and waved to me while I was doing my grocery shopping earlier tonight.

    so yeah, we're all good.

anyway, after all that venting, what do you think I should do?

    as usual, all opinions welcome.

oh, and vote in my poll.

    peace.

so, I was thinking about this new writing idea.

it's nothing all that special, and I probably won't even post it to GA, but I was thinking about doing a series of tongue-in-cheek vignettes based on popular tv shows.

in particular, popular formulaic tv shows. CSI, Criminal Minds, Hot in Cleveland, How I Met Your Mother, that sorta stuff. anything that's cliched or follows the same episode structure every week.

to start you off, this is one I've done for the popular CBS sitcom, Two and a Half Men:

as you can see, it's a very literal form of humour, highlighting the cliched nature of the subject matter. other parodies might reference the off-screen lives of particular actors (eg: Charlie's fascination with porn stars), but I thought I'd stay in character and play by their rules for the first one.

anyway, let me know what you think.

if enough people like them, I might actually bother to put some up in eFiction or something.

in other news, blew my knee out last weekend. nothing particularly special (playing basketball - don't even remember when it happened, frankly), but it's swollen as all hell, and walking in anything other than straight lines is pretty much a no-go. fun times. doctor's thinking torn cartilage, so I'm looking at at least six weeks on the sideline if it able to heal by itself.

    otherwise, surgery.

    ugh.

anyway, could tell you a million other wonderful stories, but I'll save those for another time.

needless to say, life is pretty good.

    hope you're all well.

    peace.
  9. PlugInMatty
so.......... it's, um, been a while.

    six months, in fact.

six months since my last (proper) blog update and...

    um...

    I've got nothing.

well, that's not entirely true. I've been places, met people, done things, made progress. but still, as I sit and write this...

    nothing.

it's like life has settled down and become pleasantly non-descript.

    vanilla, even.

it's not chocolate, strawberry, topping or sprinkles; but it's kinda sweet and fulfilling nonetheless.

    as I said, vanilla.

anyway, can't be bothered doing the whole 'catch up' thing at the moment, so I'll just get straight to the point of today's blog...

I'm taking one of my stories offline.

you know the one I haven't updated in twelve months?

    yeah, that one.

basically, I'm desperately unhappy with it, so I'm taking it offline until further notice. hopefully that'll give me the motivation to begin reworking it and actually finish it properly. there's a nice, clever little story in there somewhere, and I've got a significant amount of unedited material sitting on my hard drive, so I'm 99% sure that I'll come back to it at some point.

in the meantime, I'm working on something else.

I always did have big plans for The Middle, so I'm gonna give that my full attention for now. that said, I don't know when I'll be posting any new chapters. from what I understand, eFiction is being torpedoed, so that doesn't exactly motivate me to start posting again. I know that sounds bad, but I really don't see the point of posting something new and then having to repost it all again.

(and now I'm in a bad mood. Thanks, GA.)

anyway, I'm off to clean up my computer desk and actually do some writing.

    feel free to say hi.

    Matt.

    so, Bieber Fever has hit.

    like, really hit.

    the little f**ker's everywhere!

what started as an unexpected (read: unwanted) surprise on daytime tv last month, has now turned into a full-blown cultural phenomenon. he's #1 on the charts, #1 on Twitter, #1 in little girls' hearts and I'm pretty sure full-grown adults do #1s in their pants every time they hear his pre-pubescent voice.

but, for all the hype and screaming and oh-my-god-he's-so-freaking-cute, Bieber Fever is still a work in progress.

consider the following incidents at work:

    Monday, 7.05am
    Matt: "Morning, all."

    Colleague #1: "Morning."

Matt: "See the news this morning?"

    Colleague #1: "No, why?"

Matt: "Justin Bieber cancelled his concert. Worst news ever."

    Colleague #1: "Justin who?"

    Matt: "Oh, never mind."

    Monday, 12.17pm

Matt: *sits down at lunch table* "Hello, everyone."

    Colleague named 'Everyone': "Hello."

    Matt: "What's news?"

    Colleague named 'Everyone': "Not much."

Matt: *feigns interest, contempation and, finally, lack of knowledge* "Anyone see that Bieber thing on the news this morning?"

    Colleague named 'Everyone': "Who?"

    Matt: "Oh, never mind."

    Tuesday, 7.37am

Colleague #7: "Hey Matt, I saw that Bieber kid on the news last night."

    Matt: "Really?"

    Colleague #7: "Yeah."

    Colleague #8: "Me, too."

    Matt: "And?"

Colleague #8: "What's wrong with his hair?"

    Matt: "I don't know, Colleague #8. I really don't."

    Tuesday, 12.08pm

Matt: *sits down at lunch table*

Colleague named 'Everyone': "Hey Matt, I saw that Bieber thing you were talking about."

    Matt: "You did?"

Colleague named 'Everyone': "Yeah, it was on the news last night."

    Matt: "Oh. And?"

Colleague named 'Everyone': "Um, that's all, really."

Matt: "Fair enough." *begins eating lunch*

    Tuesday, 2.37pm
Matt: *walks back into office after his break*

Colleague #3: "Baby, baby, baby, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..."

Matt: "What are you doing, Colleague #3?"

Colleague #3: *goes silent* "Um, nothing."

Matt: "No, wait, you were singing, weren't you?"

    Colleague #3: "No!"

    Matt: "Yes, you were."

    Colleague #3: "No, I swear!"

Matt: "Were you singing a Justin Bieber song, Colleague #3?"

    Colleague #3: "No! I swear!"

Colleague #4: "Don't listen to him, Matt. He's been doing it all day!"

Matt: "Right, Colleague #3. You die now."

Colleague #3: *tries to run away* "Baby, baby, baby, noooooooooooooooooooooooo..."

    Thursday, 10.23am

    Matt: "Hi, Colleague #247."

    Colleague #247: *mumbles greeting*

Matt: "How are you today, Colleague #247?"

    Colleague #247: *grunts* "Shit."

    Matt: "How come?"

    Colleague #247: *grunts again*

    Colleague #2479: "I don't think he's well, Matt."

Matt: *nods at Colleague #2479* "Is this true, Colleague #247?"

    Colleague #247: *grunts again*

Matt: *rests hand against forehead* "Have you had the flu shot?"

Colleague #247: *grunts, mumbles, nods head*

    Matt: "Hmmm...."

Colleague #2479: "Any idea what it is, Matt?"

Matt: *considers situation for a moment* "Well, I can't be sure, but I think he might have a serious case of Bieber Fever."

    Colleague #2479: "Oh, of course!"

Matt: "Yep. And I think he might be terminal."

    Colleague #247: "Matt, f**k off."

Matt: "Your funeral, buddy." *walks away*

    so, there you have it.

    Bieber Fever is catching.

and in a world of blanket news coverage and reverse-cycle air-conditioning, I fear it's a matter of time before I become the next victim.

    god help us all.
  11. PlugInMatty
so, I think one of my basketball players is gay.

it's irrelevant, it's stupid, and I feel like a complete and utter retard for actually writing this, but I think one of my basketball players is gay.

it's not like ooh, I hope he's gay, too! no, no, that'd be creepy. it's more like damn kiddo, you're gay as a bag full of butterflies.

consider the evidence: he talks with a lisp; he's really, really, really excitable; he's always jumping on the gymnastics equipment when we're at training; and, this is the best part, he grabbed my whiteboard on Thursday night and drew me a rainbow.

    that's right, a rainbow.

that's not even the best part though; he drew the entire thing with black texta.

    lol.

anyway, it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. I mean, we're talking about teenage boys here. he's a really nice kid and all of his team-mates seem to like him, but the boys are at the age where they might feel threatened by someone different. or maybe I'm underestimating them. maybe I'm old and crusty and stuck in the 1990s haha. still, he's the exact kinda kid who used to get picked on when I was their age (13 going on 14), so it's probably something I should keep an eye on.

    see what happens, I guess.

    in other news, I'm sick.

    like, really sick.

I've been on bed rest three of the last five weeks and I'm still nowhere near 100%.

the doctor's been playing around with my tablets a bit, and I've at least started getting my appetite back, but most of the other symptoms still persist:

headaches, sore throat, fever, joint aches, swollen glands, nausea, zero appetite, light-sensitivity...

oh, and then I got a chest infection on top of that.

and did I mention constant fatigue?

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes, how could I forget the constant fatigue?

    (f**k you, fatigue).

most mornings I actually wake up feeling more fatigued than when I went to sleep the night before. how the hell is that supposed to work? and then there's the everyday tasks that just leave me feeling absolutely wrecked. I actually had to lay down after having a shower today, because the effort of standing under a stream of hot water was apparently beyond my fragile little body. f**k sake. I'm 23 years old. pretty sure I'm not supposed to feel like I'm on my deathbed.

anyway, I'm supposed to go back to work on Monday, so we'll see how that goes. at this stage, there's absolutely no chance I'm going to survive a full day at the office. it's not like I'm going to lose my job or anything (sick pay and annual leave have covered my three weeks of absence so far, and I'm a long-term, full-time employee), but I don't particularly like the idea of spending another week in medical limbo.

    see what happens, anyway.

if I wake up sick on Monday morning, I'm supposed to go back to the doctor anyway, so I'll get a result one way or the other.

    enough about that, anyway.

what else can I talk about?

    oh, writing.

yeah, things are still quiet on the writing front.

the words are there, the ideas are there, and there's at least five projects (four chapters, one short story) that are currently in a state of near-completion, but nothing's going to get done while I'm laying here trying to summon the energy to get up and go to the toilet.

did I mention this whole sick thing is f**ked?

    ugh.

honestly, I just don't have the energy to write. I know, it's just sitting at a laptop, right? well, wrong. it's concentration. it's decision-making. it's... stuff. I dunno, it's beyond me at the moment. I can't even play video games for half an hour without needing a nap.

speaking of video games, the new NBA Jam looks friggin' insane.

    INSANE.

can't wait to go out and buy it.

and speaking of things that are completely insane...

    daytime tv.

what the hell happened to it?

it used to be soap operas and cooking shows, but now it's 'opinionated women' telling their sofa-bound brethren exactly what opinions an 'opinionated woman' should have.

    f**king idiots.

seriously, I've been laying around the house, watching The View, and all I can think is this:

    does Elisabeth Hasselbeck knowing anything?

    no, seriously. anything?

no wonder she's called the most dangerous conversative in America.

    f**king douche.

and can somebody tell me what the hell a Justin Bieber is?

whatever it is, it needs to be shot.

    seriously.

    f**king teenyboppers.

    anyway, I'm tired.

if I die in the meantime, I'll be sure to let you know.

    Peace.

so, I came out to my friends last night.

I picked up pizza, drove over to my friend Kate's house, and I came out to my friends.

    it went something like this:

Me: "um Kate, I have something to tell you."

    Kate: "yes, Matt?"

Me: "I just turned down a booty call."

    Kate: "YOU WHAT?!?"

Me: "I, ummmm, I just turned down a booty call."

    Kate: "what? why?!?"

    Me: "ummmm, because..."

    Kate: "yeah..."

Me: "I, ummmm... how do I explain this..."

    Kate: "go on..."

Me: "I think I prefer sex with strings attached."

    Kate: *stares blankly*

Kate: "who are you, and what have you done with Matt?"

    Me: *flushes with embarrassment*

    Me: "I don't know. I just don't know who I am anymore."

so that's it, that's my coming out story.

it's also the story of how I turned down no-strings-attached sex and spent my Saturday night eating pizza and watching Back to the Future.

    f**k my life.

so, I walk into the office this morning (five minutes late, mind you), and I'm confronted with a couple of new additions...

    posters.

on the walls, on the doors, in the halls...

    posters.

appparently, the new office manager decided that we didn't look corporate enough, so he's decided to cover every square inch of the office in posters.

    posters.

    new deli department!

    new fruit and veg!

    new seafood!

    new new new!

and, of course, the corporate logo is prominently displayed on each one.

it feels like I'm being brainwashed.

    we own you, Matthew.

we're awesome, tell all your friends!

but as bad as that is, there's an even more evil sub-plot. money. financial gain. I feel underpaid as it is, but now it feels like I'm being subliminally told to pump my entire paycheck back into the company, as well.
    spend where you earn, Matthew.

see these lovely new fruit and vegetables? they could be yours!

so anyway, in a show of defiance, I stopped at a rival supermarket on the way home and bought a litre of milk.

let's call it a peaceful protest.

    take that, corporation.

    god I'm such a badass.

So, back in primary school, the word 'sex' was just the funniest thing ever.

In second grade, we used to have these posters on the classroom wall with the word 'Exercise' on them. I used to take great joy in putting the letter 'S' in front of that word, to create a new word: 'Sexercise'. That's right, sexercise. Then, in third grade, when I moved up a grade but stayed in the same classroom, I figured out that I could put the letter 'X' on the end of it and create sexercisex.

    Sex.

    YEAH.

Anyway, as much as my old-man rants would lead you to believe otherwise, people used to have sex back in my day. Hell, we even used to have underage sluts back in my day. It wasn't as bad as it is now, but they were there. They used to write things like D.C 4 M.L and true love lasts 4eva all over their borrowed textbooks, and go to the mall to talk about kissing boys with braces. Needless to say, these girls weren't really good for anything. They're now thirty-two years old and still working in retail. But, as useless as they were/are, they did come up with the modern mating call that I now like to call my own: sex me.

    That's right, sex me.

    It's, like, my line.

So anyway, the Hottest 100 was on yesterday, and the words sex me became my rocket to the moon.

(If you've never heard of the Triple J Hottest 100, you're a dweeb.)

One of their crusty, veteran presenters was on air and I propositioned him, 1990s teen-slut style. That's right, I texted the words 'Sex Me, Richard Kingsmill' (his name) to their studio hotline. I thought it was great. But then an hour passed, nothing happened, and Richard went off air. Damn. BUT THEN, about two hours (and six jelly shots) later, my phone starts ringing. I can't hear it over the music, but it goes to voicemail and I feel my phone vibrate. So, I check my voicemail, and it's Sam Simmons from the radio! OH MY FREAKING GOD.

Anyway (I'm saying that a lot tonight), his voicemail says he's going to call back, so I grab two of the closest partygoers and we lock ourselves in a spare bedroom to await the callback from Sam Simmons. Five minutes later, it comes.

The next five minutes... well, I can't describe it.

However, the results of our phone call were played on national radio this morning.

So, if you've ever wondered what I sound like when absolutely smashed, click on this link here. Select Tom and Alex: Wednesday 27 January, fast-forward to the 14:50 mark of the podcast and laugh your little arse off.

    And then, comment away.

So there's this running joke in my circle of friends:

    Facebook = Fight Club.

Because what's the first rule of Fight Club?

YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB.

So anyway, I go to this party last night, and all this girl wants to talk to me about is Facebook.

    Facebook.

    Ugh.

Remember, before Facebook, when we used to have actual conversations?

    Stupid bitch.

    [/end rant]

that's all I have to say.

    check out my new story.

    Peace.

so, I still don't have my old laptop.

it's been over a week, and I still can't get access to my up-to-date copy of The Things You Fear The Most.

    Gay.

can't get access to my MP3s or tv shows, either.

    Gaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy.

the repair shop screwed up my order, so now they won't have the part I need until Tuesday of next week.

    Gay Gay Gay Gay Gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

    Gay.

it's not all bad, though. I've written about 10,000 words in the past two weeks, so that's pretty cool. if I can maintain even half that output over the next couple of months, I might even get some of these projects finished before my 75th birthday.

    not gay.

anyway, I got my first real flame the other day.

sure, I've had constructive criticism before, but this was an actual flame. truth be told, I didn't know how to react. at first, I laughed my ass off, thinking I'd got a really strong reaction from a reader and that it was actually a bit of a compliment. but then I got really, really, really pissed off. how dare this Johnny-come-lately sign up to GA and then leave an insulting review. the funny thing was, the person left the terrible review, deleted it, wrote a much-nicer review, wrote me a PM to apologise for the original review, said they were embarrassed and hopeful that I didn't read the original review, then spat the dummy when I admitted to reading the original review, and left an even nastier bit of a feedback after that.

    I mean, come on.

if I take time out of my day to write you a story and then respond to your nasty and childish correspondence, you'd better damn well justify any nasty response that you choose to send back. calling my chapters 'woosey sized' and proclaiming your chapters to be 'man sized' is not a constructive criticism, especially when I take five minutes to view some of your work and am forced to hit the 'back' button because it's so obvious that you haven't proof-read.

that's enough about readers with mood disorders for one day, anyway.

I'm watching heaps of tennis at the moment. they're sooooooooooooooo pretty. and I'm flogging the shit out of Grand Slam Tennis on the Wii. currently hold all major titles, bar the French. stupid French. it's all good, though.

and I'm going out clubbing tonight. it feels weird to call it 'clubbing', but if I said 'I'm going out tonight', you'd be left with the impression that I never leave the house. whether or not that's actually true, I still don't want to leave that impression. but yeah, it's a Wednesday night, and I'm going out.

I remember, back when I was 19-20, we'd go out every Wednesday night. but now that I'm actually thinking about it, I haven't been out on a weeknight since the middle of 2007.

    god, I'm so old.

anyway, I'm gonna get back to writing this new story of mine. feedback's been pretty cool so far, although I'm a bit miffed that 300 people would read something and only five would leave any feedback. all I can say is, don't complain to me in five chapters' time.

actually, just don't complain to me at all.

    ever.

    Peace

So, massive tech fail this morning.

Sitting on the computer, reading the overnight news from CNN, and suddenly the computer comes up with a '0% battery' warning. So I double-check the power connection, decide that everything's in order, then go back to reading my morning.

Anyway, two minutes later, the laptop cuts out.

So, in my wisdom, I phone HP tech support. Raj in Kolkata tells me 'I can do a software check, but it will cost you 33 dollars.' I say 'well, the laptop won't turn itself on, dickbag.' He says, 'ok, phone Melbourne'. So, I hang up and phone Melbourne. In Melbourne, I speak with Amy. Straight away, Amy says 'no, phone Hobart', and agrees that Raj is a dickbag. So, I hang up and phone Abby here in Hobart. Abby says '250 dollars, please'. I say 'thank you, you've just inspired me to buy a new computer'.

So I went down to the local computer store and bought a shiny new HP Pavillion dv6.

    Gosh it's pretty.

So anyway, now I have a new computer.

And, since I spent over $1200, I also have a free xbox.

    Hooray for xbox.

But anyway, since I'm a douche and hadn't backed up my files since before Christmas, I'm now in a position where I can't access the 'good' copy of The Things You Fear The Most until at least Thursday night, which is f**ked, cos I'd written 1,000 words last night and I was only a couple of days away from getting it finished.

    Gay.

So anyway, now I've gotta wait til Thursday when the computer shop gets the part that they need to convert my old hard drive into a USB drive.

    Gay.

So now, instead of getting a new chapter of TTYFTM out by the end of this week, I've decided to turn my attention to something else. Another story, in fact. One that I'd posted in Sneak Peeks a while ago, and have been itching to write for quite a few weeks. The first couple of chapters are all planned out, so I'll see if I can get the first chapter of that done before I get my proper copy of TTYFTM back later in the week.

    Exciting?

    Well, we'll see.

I really think that the new story is gonna be awesome, so if you see a new story unexpectedly pop up over the next handful of days, you'll know that I made some solid progress while on TTYFTM hiatus.

Also, while I'm here, I've gotta mention something else.

    Tennis.

    Tennis, tennis, tennis.

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah.

The Australian Open is about to start and all the tennis stars are down here in Australia for the next couple of weeks.

    w00t!

    Gosh tennis players are hot.

Andy Roddick, Richard Gasquet, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Marat Safin...

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Marat Safin.

The things I'd do to that man.

    Um... yeah.

    That's all, really.

Wish me luck with this new story!

    ...and Marat.

    Peace

When did Australia stop being the lucky country?

It seems that every morning of late, I turn on the news and hear of some new racially-motivated crime that's taken place in Australia. Bashings, muggings, gang violence, murder. In the last week, we've had two Indian nationals murdered on Australian shores for no other reason than the colour of their skin. Disgusting. But despite the truly vile nature of these hate crimes, Australian police are refusing to acknowledge that these crimes are racially-motivated. There's no evidence to support such a claim. I'm sorry, is there evidence to suggest that these crimes weren't racially-motivated? Furthermore, if these crimes aren't racially-motivated, does that mean that Australians are now being murdered just for daring to walk down a public street? How is that not news?

    What a joke.

Anyway, since these crimes aren't racially-motivated, the Australian media has mounted its high horse and taken offence to a cartoon published in an Indian daily newspaper. This is the cartoon in question:

    *pause for lolz*

As you can, it's actually pretty clever and funny.

Obviously, I don't like my country being portrayed as some KKK backwater, but what do people expect when we're murdering people just for being different?

    God, I'm different.

How long is it going to be before somebody turns up dead outside a gay bar? Will it be me? Should I not kiss another boy in public for fear of copping a knife between the shoulder blades? And if, god forbid, it happens; will you turn on the morning news and be told this crime wasn't sexually-motivated?

What a sad, sad world we live in.

Anyway, in other news, I went to a music festival yesterday.

    It went like this:

Music, alcohol, boppers, alcohol, poppers, alcohol, boppers, alcohol, music, alcohol.

Just like any other festival, basically.

The music was good (check out Empire of the Sun, if you haven't already), the alcohol was over-priced (but good), the boppers were annoying... and the poppers? Well, that was a bit of a sad story. There was a boy, rather cute, someone who I know through friends, definitely gay, and delightfully single. Anyway, I'm there in the crowd, going through the will-I-or-won't-I debate in my head, and then he's suddenly got a bottle held up to his nose.

    Damn it.

I have no real issue with drugs, per-se. I mean, I like gay sex, so I'm hardly going to judge other peoples' lifestyle choices. But still, my default attitude is pretty much don't ask, don't tell. Pop, smoke or snort anything you like, just don't drag me into it. So anyway, I didn't want to get caught up in someone else's court case, so I aborted that mission before it even really started.

    Again, damn it.

And now for another community service announcement:

Carrying people on your shoulders. It's bad. This is what my shoulders look like this morning:

    Messy.

I carried my friend Ben for a couple of songs. That guy needs to eat more, seriously. I carried his girlfriend for a couple of songs, too. I reckon, between the two of them, they'd still weigh less than I do. And trust me, I don't weigh that much.

    98 kilos.

    215 pounds.

    15 stone.

    3457 ounces.

    Whatever.

    Most of it's muscle.

Anyway, this other girl wanted to get up there, so I picked her up and carried her. Bad idea. Not only was she heavier, but f**k she was violent. Moving everywhere. She was wearing shorts with zippers and buttons and shit all over them, too. That's why my shoulders are all messed up today. My hip is pretty messy, too. I felt a bit of sharp pain while I was carrying the random girl last night, but I didn't think any more of it at the time. Bad idea. Let's just say, once the adrenaline and alcohol started wearing off last night, I couldn't walk. Even now, I'm laying in bed and there's a shooting pain travelling down my leg. Think I might have to go back to the doctor about it.

That'll f**k up my holidays just nicely, won't it?

(I'm on annual leave until the 27th)

I promise to do some writing while I'm off work! Hopefully I'll get a new chapter out in the next few days. Maybe, maybe not. We'll see.

I just got invited to join a Facebook group, too. You're in Australia, SPEAK ENGLISH. Who creates these things, honestly?

The funny thing is, I was invited by a bloke who went on an overseas holiday last July. Does he not understand irony? It's not like he learnt Thai in between drinking and groping ladyboys.

    What a tossbag.

Actually, now I think about, he was probably the bloke who murdered those Indian nationals.

Ah well, at least he's not a racist.

    Peace

so, it's a whole new year. a whole new decade, in fact.

    wow.

is it really ten years since Y2K? ten years since Malcolm in the Middle? ten years since The White Stripes? ten years since Relationship of Command? ten years since Enema of the State? ten years since Halflway Between the Gutter and the Stars? ten years since 'oh my god, the Olympics are coming to Sydney!'?

jesus christ, it's ten years since Pokemon!

    I f**king hated Pokemon.

    I still f**king hate Pokemon.

anyway, I think the new year is always a good time to take stock and reflect on where I've been and where my life's going.

so where have I been in the past year? well, nowhere. I haven't flown anywhere, been on holiday, gone anywhere interesting, done anything unusual... nothing. I'm still working for the same company (albeit in a more senior position), still list my relationship status as 'single', still hang out with the same group of friends... same everything, really.

    except everything's different.

I feel like a completely different person. more grounded, more mature, more focused, more confident.

    more happy.

I was happy with myself 12 months ago, but now I feel invincible. like every life decision is going to be the right one. basically, I can do no wrong. that attitude can probably be attributed to a lot of things, but I think there's one thing in particular that acted as the catalyst:

    this.
    writing. GA.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's one year this week since I started posting The Things You Fear The Most!

    Insane.

I don't even know what made me do it, really. Chapter One had been sitting around on my laptop in various (mostly shitty!) forms since at least September 2008, but I'd never really bothered to actually do anything about it. so, one night, I gave it a title (not even a real title - just the title of a song I was listening to at the time), posted it in Sneak Peeks and said 'right, I'm bored, tell me what doesn't work'.

turns out that lots of things didn't work!

so I went back to the drawing board, changed a whole heap of shit, created a new character, changed a lot of the storyline's fundamentals, tossed in a third-person plotline as an almost-afterthought and created something that's, well... I don't actually know what it is, just yet.

but I'm 99% sure that it's pretty awesome hahaha

and from the feedback my readers give me, they think it's pretty awesome too!

so let me just say, thank you to all my readers. you made 2009 the most unbelieveably awesome year ever.

thank you to my editor Sharon, as well. I wouldn't have gotten anywhere if Sharon wasn't there to answer my dumb questions, bounce my dumb ideas off, correct my stupid mistakes and return my emails at a ridiculously fast pace.

and thank you to Chase. you're a total spastic (I mean that in the nicest possible way ), but the fun I've had editing your stuff has made my own writing so much better. admittedly, none of it has actually been posted in eFiction yet, but it's still awesome nonetheless.

anyway, that brings me to the question I'm sure all of my readers have been wondering... where's the new chapter?

    well, it's... stalled.

    still in progress.

plotted in its entirety, most of it's actually written in its entirety, but there's just a couple of pivotal scenes that I can't find the time or inspiration to finish. truth be told, there's a couple of 'finished' scenes that aren't really up to scratch, either. sit tight though, because the new chapter isn't far away.

I have a feeling it's gonna be worth the wait, too.

oh, and there's one other thing. I was reading the new DNA yesterday (some of us actually read it, you know), and there was this competition thing where you basically write 3,000 words of erotica and you can win $2000. so I'm gonna do it. I've never actually written anything with that sort of focus before, but it's a challenge I'd be really interested in taking up. in fact, I'm so interested that I've plotted it in its entirety and already started writing it. it's only 3,000 words, so with a bit of effort it could actually be finished in the next couple of weeks. or, more likely, I'll get sidetracked and it'll be finished about 5 minutes before the actual deadline.

but who cares, I'm doing it.

    who knows, might win something.

the only catch is, my entry cannot be previously published. therefore, I won't be able to post it to GA.

    damn.

    HOWEVER...

    I have an idea.

since my readers are so awesome, I was thinking that I could write this story and distribute it via email to a handful of lucky GA readers. it'd be kinda like a reward, for all the people who keep in touch and give me such awesome feedback. they know who they are. so, if you get a random private message from me promising to increase your penis size by 30% in three simple steps, you'll know that you're one of the lucky readers. don't fret if there isn't a PM in your inbox by the time you read this, though. it could be days, it could be weeks, it could be months.

I'll blog about it when it's done.

oh, and Santa brought me a Wii.

    helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll yeah!

I might go play it now, actually.

    take care, dear reader.
    xMatt.

So there's this Australian politician who yesterday told a press conference that he was molested by his scoutmaster.

    (Link here)

Now usually, I would not go anywhere near the subject of child abuse. It's f**ked, it's wrong, and there's an especially fiery place in hell for those who do it. But this guy is the public face of political conservatism, and represents a party whose core political belief is that gay people are second-class citizens.

He's anti-LGBT adoption, he's anti-IVF treatment for lesbians, he's anti-Gay marriage. He's anti-you and I, basically. If he had his way, we'd probably live by the word of the bible and all the gays would be herded into Auschwitz.

But he's a child abuse victim.

    Err... so?

How can I reconcile that with the fact that he's a conservative dirtbag?

    ...

    Nope, I can't. I just can't.

I know he's an abuse victim, but...

    Nope, it's just not there.

I get robbed of civil liberties, he gets robbed of his childhood.

It's like retro-active karma. and you know what? that sits just fine with me.

    Karma's a bitch, Steve Fielding.

So I've been looking for somebody to take out all this pent-up rage on. After a week of picking up everyone's slack, cleaning up everyone's mess, putting up with everyone's shit and dealing with outlandish expectations, I've finally found a person to take out all this frustration on.

    It went something like this:

Friday 4pm. You get home from work and find the heater is turned up to max, that there's a load of washing drying out and there's not a single person home to supervise. After further investigation, you find that your housemate has been off work for the fifth day in a row, and that she's 'forgot' to turn the heater off and prevent the house from burning to the ground. And after five more minutes of exemplary detective work, you find she's removed the tape that's holding her back together, disregarded the physio's very-specific instructions, and proclaimed herself 'pain-free!' at exactly 5:00pm on Friday.

But you don't spit the dummy at any of this, because she's flying interstate on Sunday morning and you won't have to put up with her for the next five days. And truth be told, your anger is over-powered by sheer amusement at the way she can run and jump around at a Ben Folds concert when she's been far too crippled to get off the couch and go into work since the previous Friday morning.

    But anyway.

Saturday 9am. You get out of bed and find there's pizza boxes strewn all over the loungeroom, and that your housemate is far too unfit to clean up any sort of mess, despite possessing fitness levels that have clearly allowed her to make it. But you say 'f**k it. f**k you. f**k it.', and you just walk right on by and drag your sorry arse to the gym for another Saturday morning of pain and pretty, pretty gym boys.

Saturday 11.50am. You finish your workout at the gym, you hop back in the car and decide to make that supermarket visit you've been unable to find the time for all week. You see that all the lines are massive, that the guy in front of you is a bit of an arsehole and you watch him stare with contempt at the poor girl who's just trying to earn a bit of pocket money and make a contribution to the Australian workforce. Then you watch the same guy walk away shaking his head, muttering about the level of service he's just received.

But you don't say anything, because he's bigger, stronger, built to hurt, and he probably doesn't like those gosh-darned homosexuals very much.

Saturday 12:03pm. You walk out of the supermarket and toward your local newsagent, deciding that it's time to pick up this month's copy of DNA Magazine. You calmly walk over to the rack, make your selection, walk up to the counter and grab out your wallet to give the girl behind the counter $8.95. The ensuing exchange goes something like this:

Girl: "Would you like a bag for this?" *raises eyebrow*

    You: "Excuse me?"

Girl: "Would you like a bag for this?"

    You: "No, thank you."

    Girl: "Okayyyyyyyyyy." *raises eyebrow again*

    You: "Is there a problem?"

    Girl: "No."

You: "Good, because you don't offer me a bag when I come in and buy basketball magazines every month, yet you insist on offering me a bag EVERY SINGLE TIME I come in and buy a magazine that could have - oh my friggin' god - gay people in it. Would you like me to conceal my sexuality? Does it make you uncomfortable that I like boys? Do you offer straight men a paper bag when they come in and ogle half-naked women on the cover of Zoo Weekly or Ralph? No. I don't want a bag. I don't want your judgement. Get over yourself."

    Girl: *rolls eyes* "$8.95, please."

You: "You know what, keep the magazine. Go f**k yourself."

And then you walk away from the counter, straight past the five or so people who have gathered to watch your vagina monologue, and you march straight down to another newsagency to buy your copy of DNA and live happily ever after.

And then you come home and write a blog about your first tentative foray into the world of gay activism.

    *Holds for applause*

Thank you, you've been a great audience.

Chapter Six is now plotted and written in its entirety.

    Yay!

But there's a catch... it's written entirely in dot points.

    Oops.

So now I've got a week to take 3,000 words worth of dot points and turn it into something that's up to my usual lofty (*cough*) standards.

Anyway, since it worked so well for Chapter Six, I'm going to blog a bunch of random dot points today and you can respond as you wish.

    - on annual leave until October 6th, and I've got absolutely nothing planned between now and then.
    - haven't been to gym in ten days, due to a retarded foot (x-rays negative, thankfully)
    - posted a sneak peek of my next story here. you should read it/comment it. NOW.
    - discovered the wonders of champagne breakfast on Saturday morning.
    - discovered the wonders of Adrian Grenier on a 3 metre projector on Sunday morning
    - discovered that my iPod has a bizarre habit of playing You Found Me by The Fray when I put it on shuffle
    - I don't even really like The Fray.
    - told a Greek girl that she has more facial hair than I do on Saturday, so she cried
    - met a girl who was an accessory to a recent murder, so now I know a local 'celebrity'
    - met a cute boy, but found my desire to have sex with him was overwhelmed by my desire to punch him in the face. fortunately, I did neither.
    - watched Australia's equivalent of the Super Bowl with twenty or so friends on Saturday afternoon, got pretty trashed
    - reinforced my belief that Aussie Rules kicks the shit out of Gridiron
    - discovered a show called Better Off Ted. funny as shit.
    - got Calvin Harris' Ready for the Weekend stuck in my head. rather annoying.
    - came up with a great set of characters the other day, now just need to write them a storyline
    - thinking about getting involved in the wider writing community, once I have a couple of completed projects to 'shop around'
    - emailed a lady about joining a local organisation... three weeks ago. no response.
    - cat just went to sleep in the space between my laptop and my face.
    - cat showing no signs of moving, that could be my cue...

    later.

    So I grew up.

Dunno when it happened, but I grew up.

After years of promising myself that I'd turn 23 and devote an entire year to living out Blink 182's What's My Age Again?, I've woken four days after my 23rd birthday and realised that I'm already grown up. A functional, contributing member of society. A fully-fledged adult.

    What do I do?

    Now I'm scared.

I think I'm gonna have to sit back and have a think about what this means...
