  1. I've actually read memoirs on Nifty that were so boringly written that I actually had to remind myself that they actually hapenned to somebody. True stories, to me, can make for better content, but it still takes that spark that makes a character someone you want to read about, ficitonal or not. If the writer is good enough, all stories feel like "true" stories
  2. I love the new colors, Myr. And the Soapbox brings me back to my days on the Bill Maher forums. Ahh, to debate again...
  3. I think he was a run-of-the mill bully used to symbolize Justin's old life. ie, him overcoming it, avoiding it, suffering under it. I doubt a character with that little depth has the passion needed to be Rage
  4. How about "secondhand family"? Just a thought
  5. W....T....F....????? Wow, that's..unexpected. I mean it sounds good, but Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as gay ranchers? When did Focus turn into Nifty? Especially considering the title.
  6. Well, since apparently nobody else noticed that the final chapter was added (yesterday, no less) I guess it's up to me to start the thread. I can't believe it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the board! I found it by accident on nifty! Anyway, a prime piece of writing, C. I found it to be a veritable roller coaster! I loved and hated every minute, which is the best kind of story. 150th? Wow, for that you need a cake or something.
  7. I'm not realy a fan of quickies, Nifty is my only source of gay literature (ie, something I can really relate to), so I don't want to feel unproductive with the time I spend there. When I'm scrolling down Nifty I check the file size for "Dir" and go to the chapter list because what I want is an actual story. Something longer makes me feel like I can get involved more. PS. Nice post Whatsifsowhatsit2, the terms you are looking for are "thread" and "ramble"
  8. Happy Birthday, Lor83b!
  9. Then a second I shall give you: "You know my brother, faithful only to Herm
  10. Well, I'll remain a loyal daily visitor nonetheless.
  11. That's the problem with fairytales, they all end the same way. A Fantasy might be an interesting transition. I thought you meant applying the style for writing to a modern setting, but still, it's a good concept. My easter break isn't until the end of April, unfortunately.
  12. Belive me, it;s quite a balancing act to get as into the character's point of view as I want to while at the same time managing the omniscience I need in my narratives to further the plot. In the grand scheme of things plot-wise? I haven't gotten anywhere at all. In terms of how much have I written? A decent amount. It needs major meat-cleaver editing though.
  13. I'm going for multiple narratives in Underworld. It's awkward trying to maintain different perspectives when doing it all in the third person. At first it would just be the two main character's point of view up until they met, but soon different narratives kept popping in as the situations became more complex. Now it's unpredictable who will be speaking next, and it gives me a chance to build suspense when switching form one narratvie to another, lots of mini-cliffhangers.
  14. Anyone who's ever plodded through the Nifty archives understands the importance of setting your story apart when there are so many others out there. Going for a different style is often the only way in which an author's work can seem truly original, if plot-wise, it's another 'gay story' out of dozens. I think a fairy-tale writing style applied to a gay romance is an opportunity for many puns and enjoyment on the part of the reader. I was just watching Big Fish today, which is essentially a very well done fairy tale and presents an interesting view on that style of writing. That sort of feeling of weaving an epic off the top of your head.
  15. A good unit of measurement for romance in a story is how long it takes an author to describe/build up to the first kiss. If they suddenly begin going at it, they lose me. But when you're right there with them, feeling that same anticipation in some agonizing crescendo, then I'm hooked. What really gets to me in terms of romance is when they refer to that feeling of warmth you get from being close to another person. that sort of connection just gives me chills.
  16. Don't forget yourself in that list. Like I always say, there's reading a story, and then there's reading a story
  17. Not only in school, either. At this summer camp I went to, they had this lecturer who was a gay man who'd had AIDS for a couple of years. The whole discussion was just about HIV/AIDS, not even safe sex or any other STDs. I leared sooo much, and it was really helpful.
  18. I drink way too much diet coke, espicially considering how the aspertame will most likely end up giving me Alzheimer's. Also, drinking 4-6 cups of coffee a day reduces your chances of getting diabetes by 63%. I learned that on my desperate quest for a justification for all the coffee I drink.
  19. Oh, I'm in stitches.
  20. that's basically what I meant to say.
  21. In the movie Gia (wow, does all my knowledge of AIDS come from movies?), when she got AIDS from an infected needle (she was a heroin addict), it was at a time when doctors approached her in Hazmat suits with the plastic door coverings. And then she died bald and in her own blood feces. I saw that movie at an age old enough to undertsand their misconceptions about the disease, but still young enough for it to be my equivalent to your 1985 story. We actually read a book when I was in seocnd grade about AIDS, as a disease of course, and it stayed safely away form the gay issue. I didn't even know how much more prone to it gay men were for years. PS. Plugging your story in your response? How doctor Phil )
  22. No matter what, sex can kill you, but then again, a piano could fall on your head tomorrow. Life is a risk, not just sex. At my school, we had a 'Health Day' where they did separate us into boy and girl groups where we were taught everything in an open discussion, everything down to oil vs. water-based lube. I learned a lot, the various methods of testing used, etc. Now, of course, because it's a public school, the governemnt will fund abstinence programs which keep kids in the dark and increase the rate of teen pregnancies and turn the school into a pitri dish of STDs.
  23. "Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight, Will? It looks quite black."
  24. Awesome, care to give us a bit of an idea of the plot? Genre? Or would you rather keep us all in suspense?
  25. I imagine heteros would name their guns like they do their boats. That is, after women, so to name one after a man might be gay in their eyes.
