Well said.
I have some personal experience in this area, having grown up in the Golden State yet suffering a transplant inland. There are words and idioms that do not go away, despite the influence of the others around me. I think the language you grow up with is strongly rooted in your ultimate diction.
I also found, when I moved to the Midwest, that because I was a Californian, and because California is way cooler than Missouri, it made me more interesting and unique. I think, as you noted, JJ would thrive on that. Blending in is not one of his traits.
An interesting thing about Alex is that he really does follow the rules, but sometimes the rules don't fill in the gray area of what is and isn't decent. He and JJ have no formal commitment...they're just dating...so he's free to fuck Mary Ellen if he wants to.
I think JJ will only be upset if Alex ignores him. He can understand that it's tough for Alex to fly cross-country on a weekend, and he can also understand Alex's passion for riding.
I think a trip from Boston to Charlottesville (600 miles) on a private plane is a lot different than a trip to Spokane (2800 miles) on a commercial flight (probably a good 10 hour trip).

“I can’t believe you got another GMC,” I said, giving Matt shit as we drove into the ice rink parking lot. He’d just picked it up today.
“Dude, this thing rocks,” he insisted. It was a GMC Yukon Denali, almost exactly like the one he’d had in Paly. “They were completely redesigned a couple of years ago.”
“I figured you’d go for something else, just to try something different,” I said. I w

“Assholes,” Arturo said. “I’ll show them what small feels like.”
“You going to fuck them?” Gehrlich joked, cracking us up.
“Fuck you,” Arturo said. He was all pissed off because the press had been making a big deal about this matchup, which was the biggest one all year. This one was even bigger than the game in Honolulu. Today we were playing the Long Beach Poly Jackrab
You're probably right about JJ, but you and I both know that really successful athletes don't work that way. The drive to succeed is too strong.
LMAO at your visual of "Stef" at Whole Foods.
Great observations. I think you're right that JJ is in love, such that he can be. I think that Cam and Brad are good for each other right now, and I think they'll be good for each other in the future, although in what capacity I still don't know.
Thanks Maarten!
I think that Alex and Will bonding a bit is a good thing. It's hard to be in a relationship if no one likes the guy you're with, or no one knows him.
JJ is used to getting what he wants, and he wants Alex, so he'll do what he has to. I think that JJ is pretty much as you noted, and a rather cold fish, until you dig a little deeper. It's as if there's this layer of asshole you have to dig beneath.
I think it's a good idea for both of them to build ties. For Alex, he needs to convince the family that he's not scum, and for Will, he needs a link to Alex so he can be comfortable with JJ and Alex as a couple.

The plane landed smoothly at Meigs Field, but even though the landing was easy, the roar of the engines and the braking action that thrust my body forward woke me up. I blinked and wiped my eyes, then looked over at Will and Darius, who were doing the same thing. “Nice nap,” Darius said.
“Some of us used our time more productively,” Stef said, as he put away his papers.
“I was productive,” Will said.
