    Chapter 8

I think your observations about Jack are spot-on, as are your comments about Claire being embarrassed, and defensive as a result.

    Chapter 8

I agree with you: people err. The issue is how they correct that error, and that is the core thing JP is arguing for in Marie's case.

    Chapter 8

I was reading your review, and decided that JP acted like a cultured and classy version of Judge Judy. :-)

    Chapter 8

I'm sure we'll have some JP chapters along the way. In fact, Chapter 9 is a JP chapter.

    Chapter 8

I hope I didn't screw up your exams! I think banning Will was fair, since the party isn't going to be as big of a deal to him as to Isidore, Claire, and Marie.

    Chapter 8

I get Jack's reaction and his oomment. Fathers tend to stick up for their daughters. And in this case, he's pointing out that Marie has positive attributes too.

    Chapter 8

Marie's being a spoiled brat. She's not quite up to Will's maturity level, but she'll get there.

    Chapter 39

Well, an Odyssey is a big adventure, and adventures have mysteries.... I think the big question for Chartley is would he rather be the governor of Amboyna or back in England?

    Chapter 39

Thanks for putting that in context. This American totally missed the reference. :-)
  10. Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. It was kind of a crappy day, but i'm celebrating this weekend.
  11. Good choices, but I think you missed a good flashback opportunity with "Rich girl"

    Chapter 8

    Yep. :-)

    Chapter 8

Why thank you! I'm not quite as regular at posting as that, but I try.

    Chapter 8

June 29, 2001 I sat at my dining room table, staring at the two signet rings in front of me. They sat there like two islands in the middle of an ocean, isolated and alone. The significance of their presence there was devastating, something that may have sent the average person into a tailspin, but I had learned over my sixty-five years to maintain my calm, cool veneer to the degree possible. My time in the academic world, which was in essence my entire adult life

    Chapter 7

    That's too funny.

    Chapter 39

I'm not getting what you're saying, and that probably means the I'm getting old. :-)

    Chapter 39

That's a pretty apt description, especially if you factor in the power of individual families.

    Chapter 39

I love young Dutch guys too. :-) And the plot thickens.
  19. Mark Arbour

    Chapter 39

I'll just assume this review is an overall indictment of the review system. :-)

    Chapter 39

I thought it was time for Granger to put his grief aside. I think this way, Travers can be a positive memory Granger can keep with him.

    Chapter 39

In a sense, the British use of opium was a reaction to Chinese trade practices that still cause problems today. China was a net exporter, sucking the wealth out of other countries, back in those days. Seems nothing's changed.

    Chapter 39

    That was too funny.
  23. Some thoughts: 1. Sharon is awesome. 2. I think that the degree of misfortune a person experiences (as in degrees from normal) is pretty significant, so in Will's case, even though he leads a charmed life, the crises that he deals with are pretty intense compared to his normal existence. 3. My intention is not to show Claire as a person who has suddenly become evil (she hasn't), or to have her seem completely out of character by suddenly becoming this uncaring bitch. Ponder your own lives, and how you may get locked into a pattern, or a group, or whatever, and it becomes the norm. That's what I think is happening with Claire. She's been immersed in the elite world of Palo Alto and has become part of it. In a sense, she has lost some of herself to it.
  24. What a wonderful summary. That does help to explain why some of the characters I've created turn out so warped. Maybe you can do the same thing for Tony for PrivateTim's benefit. There is one other thing to consider, and one which will ultimately come up when Nana chimes in down the road. Will told Nana that if it weren't for Claire and Isidore, he wouldn't really have women in his life who loved him (in Paternity, when they were riding horses). That may explain even more his volatile reaction.
