    Methinks I smell a rat. The common thread between Mark's stories is the rat. In both they are eaten and one way or another f**ked. Eventually, this rat will turn on us.

    I did not mean to imply that JP has been toppled from his throne, but that the logical future succession seems to be JP to Brad to Matt. Brad is JP's Prince Charles and Matt is Prince William, as it were. It will be years before either succeeds to the throne. Bryan

    Ah, yes, toasting the Queen. My parents emigrated from Canada to US after World War II. Whenever God Save the Queen was played, they instantly stopped what they were doing. I frequently reminded them that a consequence of the revolutionary war is that we don't have to stop what we're doing every time the song plays. My father belonged to a men's dining club in Ontario and at gentlemen's dinner the toast was offered. This would be in the 1960s and 70s. Bryan

    Mark, You posted Chapter 16 so quickly, that I didn't get my reaction to Chapter 15 up in time (not that I'm complaining!). I found Chapter 15 absolutely compelling and I've re-read the chapter several times, which I've never done before. I haven't put my finger on it, yet, but it has something to do with the resolution of the "Billy issue". I sense that you've made Brad Matt's mentor and that the family leadership mantle will pass from JP to Brad to Matt eventually. As always, thanks for sharing your writing. Bryan

    I've sailed, mainly Lake Ontario, in sail boats up to 36 foot. I've sailed on smaller lakes in a Sunfish, including Rehoboth Bay. Oh, and I've sailed in the outer banks in a catamaran. I love being on the water, just hearing the wind and the boat going through the waves. I really enjoy the parts of Mark's stories when Granger's ship at sea or they're setting the sails.

    I knew nothing of Garbage until this thread. What great music. Thanks for expanding my horizons. Edit: Started a Garbage station on Pandora and now realize that I know the music, just didn't know the name of the band. Guess I was too busy with little kids to pay attention! Bryan

    Mark, You better not have sacrificed Travers' career for the sake of plot development! Perhaps it is Admiral Wilcox and Granger will have to risk mutiny to retain control and continue his mission in the face of the Admiral's command to take him to England? Bryan

    I love this story, also. I think it is the best of your stories. I started reading from the beginning about 4 chapters ago. Reading it at once is SUCH a rush. Like all drugs, coming off the high is hard. I need another fix. Bryan

    Mark is correct (of course). Ships carried spare anchors just because of the solution Granger used to resolve the problem of the anchor becoming fouled (is that the word?). In fact, I think taking on spare anchors is described in an earlier book in the series.

    Chapter 7 is totally brilliant. The little details are so great; for example, how the story of his adoption and kidney disease unfolds. And then there is this line:

    Excellent description of a naval battle and great display of strategy by Granger. I'm a firm member of the Wilcox-is-involved-in-this camp. It totally explains why Wilcox keeps his ships in port. Bryan
