Jonathan,
Thank you for keeping us posted on Adam's health. I'm glad to hear that he's doing better, and look forward to hearing from you of his full recovery. You are so fortunate to have such a good friend, and such good friends to help care for him...and you, I suspect!
The story, which I've not researched, goes that coke refused to buy Utah sugar because the LDS wouldn't drink coke. At that point, again according to the story, the LDS prophet had a revelation that "coke was okay," and Mormons could drink it, at which point Coke started buying sugar from Utah, again. I cannot verify, and apparently many LDS still consider anything containing caffeine to be "strong drink," and there fore taboo.
IMHO, coke is much better than pepsi.
Okay, except for the can crushing thing (which I never thought to try) I could do any of those things...and more...when I was 18. So, likely, could most of you have had you wanted to. It's no big deal...all it requires is practice. If you really want to see something, watch the Marriott Suites commercials...the one where the woman plays with the apple.
If our society were ever to be judged by some greater force (god, space aliens, or our enlightened descendants), the most important criterion, IMHO, would be how we used our wealth and knowledge to provide health care (cures, treatment, etc.). A very old science fiction series...Mercy Men? something like that...had this as its theme. A million people a year...or so I hear...die of preventable malaria. Others die because they cannot afford the so-called "orphan" drugs. It doesn't seem to me as if we were living up to our capabilities and...more important...our responsibilities. HIV/AIDS is one area in which we probably have the technology, now, to provide prevention (vaccine) and a cure...but we don't. More's the pity, and more's the judgment of the future.
Waves, back. There's been a severe shortage of persons from Kent, and I, for one, am very happy that yo've joined us. Be most welcome!
(I'm serious about the Kent thing...as a closet...okay, a closet Anglophile...I'm especially glad you're here.)
Wow, do I feel...old? out of it? as if I were an anachronism? Haven't seen "Torchwood." Haven't been drunk in a long time. Well, it's time to make a change. Don't have the bandwidth or the patience to watch TV, therefore...pass the vodka.
PS: For "Excuse": Now I recognize the picture!
Okay, enough! We're going nuts diagnosing a situation based on anecdotal and (potentially) apocryphal information. It's much easier, and more rewarding (if you wish to do so), to bash the LDS church based on their fundamental beliefs than on an isolated incident! Let's hear about Coca-Cola ® and Utah sugar. Let's hear about polygamy and US law. Let's hear about "Nephites" and civil rights. There's a lot more to mine than this!
Hmm. That's what I like about Alabama. Whenever I drive there, as soon as I cross the state line I feel smarter, thinner, and richer.
Oh, is this off-topic? I don't think so.
You said it: people get offended too easily, nowadays. And then they expect an apology. But no one knows how to apologize, any more. Politically correct? You don't want to open that Pandora's box. Reactions from people? Who was it who said, "You'll never go broke underestimating the taste of the American people."? (Yes, full stop, quotation arks, question mark.)
No, you're not a mess. You are a person who is reacting in a reasonable way to what could be devastating. Please do not despair. You have read the earlier responses and you know that you are never alone. Never.
hh5 sent me a link to the BBC series some time ago, and I watched a bit. Too much emphasis on scenery, camera work, stereotypical pap, IMHO. Yeah, there are some cute characters. I've set the DVR to record, but haven't found the time to watch. Apparently just not interested enough.
I've not seen problems with IE8 and this site. Any specific problems you can relate?
I do have problems downloading audio books from the library...they appear as 'music' rather than an audio book (in iTunes). I think the library is planning to blame the browser...
I much prefer texting (and email) to voice because I tend to be acerbic, abrupt, and rude when I talk. Text and email give me a chance to ponder what I "hear" and think before I "speak."
The only way to get away from my computer was to leave the house. Then I got an iPod Touch. Now I'm haunting WiFi hotspots and checking email six to ten times a day. The only thing that saves me from total addiction is the iPod's tiny keyboard and my clumsy fingers.
Welcome to the site and the forum pages. I, too, look forward to your stories. Please be sure to post an announcement in the eFiction story announcement forum when you do post so we all will know.
