Faces for Mark's Stories
methodwriter85 replied to methodwriter85's topic in Mark Arbour Fan Club's Topics
Michael Trevino (The Vampire Diaries) as Ben Mendozza? Seriously, the Vampire Diaries is like the land of hunks. He was actually my pick for Ethan until Mark revealed that Ethan was rotund. I could also see Joe, Ethan's friend. -
Funny story. I never really got that much into Queer as Folk- when it came to a depiction of gay life that I related to, I really loved David on Six Feet Under- low-key kind of gays who interacted more often with straight people instead of living in a gayborhood. The whole circuit boi thing just never appealed to me. You wanna feel old, Blue? The actor who played Justin is now 36. 36! He'd be a male cougar to a 17-year now. (Well, Randy Harrison was 23 when he played a 17-year old, but still.) I do think it might be interesting to see a Queer As Folk that reflects the changes in American society- how gay men are navigating with being able to get legally married in a lot of states, getting pressure to start families like their straight counterparts, having openly gay military men, and what it means to have a generation of boys who were never closeted- gay guys who experienced things like going to proms with another boy and getting voted Cutest Couple at their high school.

That is a pretty valid thought, I believe. Will chose to be an adult before he turned 18, on the basis that he can handle himself like an adult. So it makes the times when Will acts like a child, particularly in this chapter, really annoying. He's not held to the standard of a high school sophomore. We're supposed to hold him to the standard of a college-aged person, and there are times when he displays a stunning amount of immaturity.

Does this mean we won't see JJ and Will fight over a guy? God, I wanted to see that. If Evan Lysacek was any indication, JJ will go absolutely apeshit if Will poached a guy that he was into. I thought that was a benefit of having JJ be bisexual- Will and JJ could fight over a guy, and Darius and JJ could fight over a girl. I'm so disappointed, Mark.

Chapter 59 -When Will and Matt get into somewhat of a little tiff, where Will threatens to torch his GMC if he talks to Tony. "Revolution" by R4 -When Will and Tony drive back after the GLBT meeting, and talk. "Proud" by Heather Small -When Brad discovers that the company is engaging is homophobic and racial profiling. "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy -When Brad funds the Happy Hour for the employees that were profiled. "Praise You" by FatBoy Slim - When Brad meets Chris Mendoza, who Alec warns him about. "Dive in the Pool" by Barry Harris I hope I brought out Blue's inner 18-year old club boy with this pick. It's weird to listen to the Queer as Folk soundtrack and watch clips of it and see just how dated its become...which happens, but it's weird to think of the early 2000's as being a decade ago. I actually came across a music channel called "Y2K", decided to the hits of the 2000's, and damn that made me feel old.

I get what you're saying, but Will learned his lessons with that stuff. He worked things out with JJ, and he came to an epiphany about the Erik/Kyle thing. I do think that if Will got into an all-out fight with Matt, things would not be pretty. Matt is not an easy push-over, and Will doesn't have the benefit of being deeply loved by him like he did during his battles with Brad.

Yuengling is my go-to "okay" beer, along with Rolling Rock. My favorite "good beers" would be Blue Moon and Stella Artois, and I do like the Sam Adams Winter Lager. It's not technically beer, but Angry Orchards hard cider is pretty damn good.
-
I think he's way more aggressive and controlling than an Omega male, though. I feel like the "laid-back" part of Will's personality has been hard to remember because we've seen him in near-constant battle mode.
-
I waited until I was 19 to get a license, and it was actually a good thing, because I avoided all the restrictions. You basically just pass the written and the road test, and you've got your license. Although it seems like in some states, I would have had to deal with restrictions until I was 21. Sheesh. He hung out with people that only ever got drunk on okayish beer like Yuengling? I went to a party house that had Yuengling kegs and it was like heaven compared to having to drink Natty or Beast.

That's life, though. People float in your life, and sometimes they look like they're going to be significant, but then they float out. Especially when you're a teenager/twentysomething, which is probably when you're going to meet the most people you'll ever meet in your life. From what I understand about being in your 30's, I have to look forward to meeting far less people. Which kinda bothers me, actually. *pouts* As for Josh, it's nice to see him, but he's also a junior (he was a sophomore transfer when Wade met him during the 2000-2001 school year), and I can't really see him being that big of a factor aside from Will possibly hooking up with him a time or two. Which is fine. It's more realistic that Will has all these acquaintances that go to Stanford and he can hit up when he wants to hang out/party/hook-up. Lots of high school townie kids would hang around college parties in college towns, especially if they're like Will and they don't look out of place at a college party. Just please don't hook Will up with high school guys when he's in college. You've avoided doing that with Matt and Wade as protagonists; keep that up with Will. Although, I've gotta say...I kind of wondered if Will would be the type to always look "up" when it comes to age...like when he's 20, he'll start being interested in 35-40 year olds, and so forth. But from what you're saying, Will is going to be completely in line with normal 22-year olds. Which is interesting, because while JJ definitely sees and treats Matt like a brother, Will doesn't really seem to do so all that much, other than the decree to Tony about not getting with Matt. He didn't even ask Brad for a painting of Matt, which makes sense, but still- not so big on the brotherly bond here. I do think you can see in this chapter why it's good Matt and Will aren't all that close- two Alpha Males in close proximity is pretty explosive, and if Matt and Will tried to spend any significant amount of time together they'd get into massive fights similiar to Will and Brad. I think that's why it makes sense that they were drawn to Omega Males for brotherly bonding- Will to Wade, and Matt to JJ. Wade and JJ both have much more of a "Omega Male" personality type. I'm kinda surprised that we're apparently going to avoid having brothers fight over boyfriends. I totally thought we were going to have JJ and Will fight over a guy somewhere down the road. We got a preview of that with Evan Lysacek, which whetted my appetite for it, LOL. Oh, well. Anyway...something I'm wondering about...am I the only one who didn't try and join up a GLBT club in college and didn't really relate to those? I came to meeting one time in 10th grade, but to be honest...I felt like GLBT clubs were either support groups for people that had majorly struggled with being GLBT, or they were for people looking for dates/hook-ups, but neither of which appealed to me all that much. I mainly just hung out with straight people with a few gay friends. I came out at 15, and I didn't have any internal struggles with being gay after I was 17. In my entire life, I've only lost two friends after coming out to them, and they were just acquaintances. It kind of makes me feel like an outlier since the narrative that I always read is that you're supposed to come out and then become active in your GLBT, and it made me feel like a "bad gay" because I really had no interest in doing it. About the most I got involved with GLBT campus life was when I'd watch the Haven Drag Show, lol. There was also this one-act play showcase I took part in, where the host tried to base the entire theme around Britney Spears's "Circus" video complete with his Britney Spears drag act and a dance performance to "It's Raning Men", but that's about as gay as it got for me in college.

Losing My Religion - REM It pisses me off soooo much they didn't get the rights for "Losing My Religion" on the Beverly Hills, 90210 DVD. I'm sorry, that IS the song that defines the break-up and teenaged angst of Brenda and Dylan, damn it! Anyway, I did this all off the top of my head. Damn. I guess what they say about music imprinting really is true. -
Oh, there will be a MASSIVE lawsuit.

Austin and Darius have a great bromance going on. As for Marie, I'm digging him and her for a high school fling. Not sure it'd make it anywhere past that, because frankly, Austin doesn't come off as too bright. Marie seems like she's almost as intelligent as Will is, and I can't see her with a dumb-but-sweet type in the long run similar to how I can't Will with a dumb-but-sweet type. But that's the nice thing about these characters being 15- none of them are thinking in terms of long-term partners and are just having fun. That's what 15 should be all about.

Please tell me that this kid at the very least has lost his driver's license for life.

I really wish Will had more respect for Wally. Wally came from an abusive home where the bulk of every adult male in the family are raging drunks who can't support their children, managed to get a job, buy a home, have a 20-year odd successful marriage, raise 6 kids (4 of whom weren't actually his) , with 4 of whom are either in college or college-bound. That's a pretty successful man in my wagering. Way more successful than the assholes who spawned a monstrous kid who killed 4 people in a fit of "affluenza." I hope Will realizes what a snob he's being by the end of the story.

Zayn's pretty hot although I'm not too wild about all of his tats. It's funny how they looked like squeaky-clean 14-year old school boys back in 2011/2012, and now they're all grown men covered in tats. (Except for Niall, who still looks like a choir boy.)
-
Because 1D is still relevant going into 2014 as they had two big top 10 hits this year with "Best Song Ever" and "Story of My Life"? "Best Song Ever" was a pretty funny video:
-
Pretty cool they're still having top 10/top 20 hits: They definitely dodged the 1-hit wonder bullet...which sadly looks like it's going to be the case state-side for The Wanted.

Very true. In terms of Will, I gotta go back to how he handled the Shane Norway situation. It was an empowering moment that made him feel good about standing up for his beliefs. But what Will doesn't realize, or hasn't talked about yet, is the fact that Will made it impossible for himself to ever be a volunteer for his brother's competitions again, at least the ones being handled by the ISU. He's on "the red list" now, as Daisy referred to it. I don't think Will realizes it because it doesn't seem like he's been to any of JJ's 2001-2002 season comps yet, but it would be kind of funny for Tiffany to illuminate Will on this.

I'm already thinking in glee about the pounding Will's ego is going to take when he hits college and he runs across a hard-ass professor. Dear god. Especially if he winds up in grad school (which I think is pretty likely given Will's interest in academics and the general narrative of his generation), because there is no such thing as a professor who kisses your ass in grad school. I think that's been the most beneficial thing to me from having gone to grad school- you get it pounded into your head that you don't know everything, and that you're not the smartest guy in the room, and it's probably one of the best ways of injecting humility into people. Humility is something Will very desperately needs. Mark and I have this mutual e-friend who was a Golden Boy growing up with some similarities to Will, and it was interesting to see how this e-friend (I'll call him Aaron) reacted when he didn't get what he wanted. It was almost like Aaron refused to accept it and wrote long speeches about how he couldn't accept it, because he was very much conditioned to think that he'd get whatever he wanted as long as he tried hard enough. And this was in Aaron's early 30's, not early 20's. I wonder if Will is going to be similar... I'm also wondering how Will's going to react when "jading" things happen to him, because Will's of the mindset that he can make a big difference in the world, such as when Will take it upon himself to rid the figure skating world of homophobia and basically threatened to take down the entire ISU over the issue of Shane. Wonderful teenager hyperbole, but eventually Will's going to hit into that wall that you always hit when you're an agitator for change. In contrast, I think JJ actually seems pretty conditioned towards not getting what he wants all the time, as besides skating, the only other things he's apparently good at are gymnastics and singing. Being the middle child who gets overshadowed in favor of his Golden Boy brother might have sucked growing up, but it might actually be a pretty good thing for him in the end.
-
I think the issue with that is because of Will's emancipation. If Will expects to be treated like and have the rights of an adult, he needs to act like one, and not like a kid. Then again, I've met adults who are faaarrrr more childish than Will is. I think no matter what, there was no way Will was going to be a normal teenager, and not just because of wealth and the way he was raised. He's a very bright guy, which gives him the viewpoint that he's always right and it's up to him to illuminate those set-in-their-ways parents and grandparents. The arrogance will probably fade in time, especially once he's out of high school and facing off against professors who don't give a damn who he is.

Funny Old Advertisements That Would Be Banned Today
methodwriter85 replied to TetRefine's topic in The Lounge
Anyway, I'm not so sure 19 would be banned today...check out this ad from 2011 French Vogue. I remember this mild uproar about the ad as it was seen as being way too provocative for child models. -
I gotta admit, I'm pretty interested in the Triton stuff, as well as seeing what happens to Claremont as defense really takes off. (They have a branch of Triton there or some kind of new defense manufacturing plant there, right?) I'm also excited to see how Wade and Matt adjust to life outside of Stanford. I'm really hoping that Will has his "Aha" moment about this, like he did when he realized that Robbie wasn't the devil in Paternity. For someone who started off the story basically calling out his family for being snobs, he himself hasn't been called out on his own snotty behavior. Just for the record...I fucking LOVE Llamo Sheepskin Mocassins: Sheepskin mocassins were really popular at my school in the late '00s, but it seems to have been more of a regional thing, as I remember talking to people from Minnesota who had no clue about this.

Funny Old Advertisements That Would Be Banned Today

Some vintage commercials I don't think would fly today: -
I wonder when you're going to riff on "color code" terror alert levels. Ugh. The Post 9/11 era was nuts. I really enjoyed the high school break-up drama. Whether you're in high school in 1981 or 2001, some things don't change- like what happens when a love-sick puppy ex-boyfriend debases himself in front of everybody at school in order to try and get his girlfriend back. Marie is lucky that she's not this girl I went to high school with- apparently her ex-boyfriend picked her up and started punching and slamming her into a locker when she wouldn't take him back. I can't see Noah ever doing that, but I do think Marie's lucky that Noah is a senior and won't be around next year. High school break-ups aren't like college or real-world break-ups- you have to see that person around every day.
