<<<<Research is going to be key, but I wonder what this may affect in the future in a world without AIDS or fear of AIDS being a death sentence.>>> I'm not saying this is a right perception, but it seems like the vast majority of young people I meet today aren't all that concerned with AIDS, because people are living longer with AIDS medication in the Western World. Back in the 1990's, it seemed like you constantly saw safe sex ads on TV and people talking about using condoms to prevent AIDS. Now, it seems like the current teenage/twentysomething generation just doesn't get that. Here's an article about AIDS apathy in young people: AIDS Apathy In Young People Seriously, it's f**king scary to hear the way guys talk about having unprotected sex. It really is like there's absolutely no fear of AIDS, at least in the United States, because we're just not seeing people die off the way they were back in the 1980's and 1990's. South Park actually did an interesting episode about the total apathy you see about AIDS in the U.S. today- that it's seen as some 90's disease we don't have to worry about anymore. Though it was satire, that's sadly closer to the truth than I'd like to see.

Chapter 2 http://nifty.nisusne...k/on-the-mark-2 -When Mark notices the next day at school that his social standing has ever-so slightly improved, and hangs out with Darryl's burner friends. Okay, after finishing the Land Whore, I realize I still want to do more 70's stuff. And then I thought about Mark's 11-chapter story "On the Mark". Not finished, and not going to be finished, but I thought it would be fun to do music stuff for this story, since in terms of time period setting, it's right between "The Land Whore" and "Be Rad". And it's a way to introduce you to Mark's great work- never finished, but I thought it was a great story. Again, don't get into reading it if you're going to be bothered that it isn't finished, LOL. It's also not as clear about what year each chapter takes place in, so I prolly can't avoid the anachronisms. But, whatever. LOL. Finally, there's a lot of music I wanted to use for Be Rad, or have since discovered since doing the Be Rad story, so...yeah. Chapter 1 http://nifty.nisusne...k/on-the-mark-1 -When Mark introduces himself as a nerdy kid in mid-1970's and clues us in on the various styles that kids of the time had. "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith http://www.youtube.c...h?v=iTtffG1UKFw -When Aaron Bryce threatens to beat up Mark after school for being an f-word. "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by War http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z40NhAgNbnM -When Darryl stands up for Mark, becoming his friend in the process. "You're My Best Friend" by Queen -When Darryl corrupts Mark with oral sex and weed. "Have A Cigar" by Pink Floyd

Thanks, Mark. It's been a blast. And the early 1970's was a pretty rich time in music- definitely much easier than when I was trying to do stuff for 1980. Geez. NOT a good year for American music, 1980 was. 1973 couldn't be anymore different, though. -

Nonetheless, they have sex when they get back home. "I Can't Change It" by Frankie Miller -When Stefan and Greg have to administer shots to themselves to cure their VD, and decide they're finished with those Gordon sex parties. Hey, I consider three songs per chapter to be plenty, man. Don't be dissin' me, homie. *wink* Tiger, thanks for the suggestion. There's one downward spiral about to happen, but I actually have another song picked out for that over "Waterfalls". I loved that song and the video, so I'll try and see if I can find something else for it. -
The nostalgia thread has me thinking about the songs I remember from the golden days of MTV, so yeah...let's share some of our fave 80's tune. I'll start with something on the serious side...I LOVE the end of this video. Voices Carry by 'Til Tuesday What about you guys?

"Runaround" by Blue Traveler -When Max and Stefan engage in some pillow talk, about what happened with Marcel, only to find him there, watching him. "Undone" by Weezer -
Mark, I get what you mean about the societal stuff. I mean, the 1960's seemed pretty cool, but eh. I don't know if I would have really wanted anything more than a visit to it. Now, the 1980's? Totally different story. The flashy clothes. The music. The movies. The tv shows. TOTALLY an awesome time! What I'd give for it to be 1988 again...wearing my acid-washed dreams and watching an MTV that still had music on it and a Michael Jackson that still looked human.

JGL is lucky that he's 30(or near it), but easily passes for 21. That will help him a lot. I like the guy a lot, so I'll try and catch it.

In terms of who I'm really like, I'm soooooo Taylor from "The Ordinary Us"- the openly gay kid who loves teasing the closetcases into being more open. My friend Scott, who was as repressed as Quin was, calls me his Taylor. In terms of who I want to be, I'd want to be Davey from "Do Over"- time travel is just fricckin' cool. It'd be awesome going back to the 1980's, which I miss dearly.

Nostalgia is a very natural part of my life. I loved the 80's and the 90's, and I feel like in terms of my interests pop-culturewise, those decades were a better fit for me. Here's a song that nails the nostalgia urge: 1985 by Bowling for Soup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnYm0EmyDVU Debbie just hit the wall She never had it all One Prozac a day Husband's a CPA Her dreams went out the door When she turned 24. Only been with one man What happened to her plan? She was gonna be an actress She was gonna be a star She was gonna shake her ass(ass) On the hood of White Snake's car Her yellow SUV is now the enemy Looks at her average life And nothing, has been... all right since Bruce Springsteen, Madonna Way before Nirvana There was U2 and Blondie And music still on MTV Her two kids in high school They tell her that she's uncool Cuz she's still preoccupied With 19, 19, 1985 Woo Hoo Hooooo! (1985) Woo Hoo Hooooo! She

Chapter 12 -When Max goes over to Stefan's, and gets treated to some rough sex at the hands of Cody, and at his prodding, Stefan. "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4VAv8y2hHM -When Marcel is ripped into during family dinner at Escorial by Stefan. "Creep" by Radiohead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw6ZZG3UFKs -When JP dumps Erik, and Stefan and JP officially become a couple after 32 years of dancing around it. "Save the Best for Last" by Vanessa Williams http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdusgXW_Wi4 -
I spent the 4th of July at my sister's house in the boondocks. She had a lot of friends over, as well as the in-laws-to-be, and we sat around and had lots of food, set off fireworks, and got to know the people that I'll be calling family soon enough. Seven years ago, my sister Chrissy was in this horrible relationship with a loser cokehead named John. She was engaged to be married to him, and luckily, that fizzled out and she met a much better guy named Mike. They're getting married in September at this nice country club on the outskirts of my college town. It was a happy day for me- watching how my sister at 28 has found a certain peace that you wouldn't expect with the kind of background we've had. She has a nursing career she loves, friends that adore her, and a wonderful fiancee that I will be proud to call my brother-in-law soon enough. I'm walking her down the aisle (since, you know, our dad is nowhere to be found), and I'm glad I'll be gving her away to this nice, sweet guy that loves her. Contrast that to the girl she was at 17- barely passing 11th grade, in a relationship with a guy that our family couldn't stand, working her ass off at a dead-end job in McDonald's to help keep the light on at our apartment- and I just think, "Wow, she's really come a long way, and she's matured into one hell of a woman". As a guy who's trying to navigate the road to adulthood, and sees the end of his college years looming, it's nice to have a sibling that can kinda "show" the way. I mean, not that I plan on taking the same sort of path- but it's nice to know that she, along with my oldest sister Jenny, found a way to a good, stable life despite all the hardship we all suffered as children .

4th of July: Worth Celebrating
methodwriter85 commented on Mark Arbour's blog entry in Mark Arbour's Pride
I feel like the hell that was 2007 and 2008 for me has finally lifted, and that's what I really liked about this 4th of July. It's also nice that Sarah Palin isn't our VP. Thank god. -
1968 was a pretty tulmultuous year. Maybe MiM sparks so much because 1985, due to the growing awareness of AIDS, was a very, very horrible year for a lot of gay men? I was born in 1985, so MiM holds a particular note of fascination with me. The 1985 of the media- the Brat Pack, Marty McFly, Reagan's 2nd Morning in America term- stands in such starked contrast to what was going on with gay men at the time. Where there people for whom MiM's 1985 setting sparked off some bad memories?

I thought it ended pretty quick- slow to start and then ends quick. That's pretty much how you do your stories, man. Anyways, this spring I took a geology class, and we had something on the Ash Wednesday storm. It made me think of CAP, with JP and Peter Gordon dealing with the wrecked Delaware beaches. LOL. -
