Andrew and Jamie - 1. It starts with a beating
Andrew woke and rolled slowly out of bed. He didn’t want to get up but knew he had work and needed to get ready. Using his vampire speed he had a shower and got dressed. He knew he needed to feed but had forgotten to restock his supplies last night. He could get a bottle of blood at work and therefore decided to wait.
He wrapped his slim form in a fur-lined coat to ward off the chill of the winter evening. Being a vampire was great but still didn’t fight off the cold.
As he was getting into his car he started to feel an itch between his shoulder blades. He had the feeling of being watched, but when he looked around he couldn’t see anyone. He shrugged and set off for work.
He always marveled at the scenery as he drove through the countryside surrounding the community of Chapmistres View. His house was set in a small wooded area which afforded him the privacy his new clan knew he craved as he was painfully shy and nervous of crowds. It was only a short drive to the guard’s headquarters where he worked as an administrator, in his own office. He could probably have walked it but he liked to drive and it was snowing heavily, so he was grateful for the car heater.
As he approached the bridge that marked the edge of Chapmistres View town center he noticed another car in his rear-view mirror. As he watched, the car sped up and rammed into the back of him. He swerved trying to regain control of the car and hit a patch of ice, which sent him spinning over the side of the bridge into the river below.
The river was not usually very deep but with the rain and snow they had been having it was deeper than usual and more than enough to envelop his small car. He fought the water pressure and managed to get the door open. As he pulled himself onto the river bank another set of hands reached out to pull him up.
He lifted his head to thank his helper only to receive a punch to his face that sent him flat on his back. He rolled to avoid the next punch and came to his feet. He then realized his attacker was not alone and another was behind him. The first attacker came at him again and he saw a flash of metal before he felt a cut stinging the arm he had put up to defend himself. Knowing only a silver knife could penetrate a vampire’s skin he started to fight in earnest, knowing if they cut him enough he could bleed to death before his vampire body could heal itself or if they hit his heart he would die instantly.
He quickly realized his two opponents were also vampires as they dodged or blocked most of the punches and kicks he aimed their way. After a few more minutes he realized the vampires must be trained fighters. They were quicker and much stronger than he was. By the end of the fight he was curled up in a ball as they kicked and stabbed at him. Then they were just gone.
Andrew lifted his head and looked around but he couldn’t see them and assumed they thought they had done enough to make sure he bled to death before anyone would find him.
With painstaking slowness he pulled himself up the river bank to the road. After finding it deserted he started painfully crawling the last short distance to the edge of the town. The first house he came to had a light on outside and he headed for that light. When he reached the door he started to pound on it with all his remaining strength until his vampire hearing picked up the sound of footsteps from inside. As the door began to open he passed out cold.
