Getting to the Happily Ever After - 3. University of Texas at Austin

It had been a long time coming. Once again Randy had everything he owned loaded in the back of his truck, and he was opening a new chapter in his life. Jeff Beck’s Freeway Jam was playing in his tape deck.

Mississippi was behind him now. He had learned a lot, made many friends, some of them he even loved, but that was just a stop on his journey. His most important lesson learned was not all families are blood.

Travis had become like a kid brother to him. It had astonished him how fast and completely that had happened. There was no doubt in either of their minds that they would be lifelong friends.

Byrum Academy had been a Godsend to all three. Alex and Clay had blossomed. They were popular and quickly made many friends, and Travis was named sophomore class favorite. They would graduate over the next several years.

Jim graduated in Randy’s class and was on his way to Mississippi State. Randy worried about him being up there all alone. Of the whole group maybe Jim had come the farthest of them all. He was different now; his darkness was gone and he was happy. He had met someone special, and now they were on their own journey and Randy wished them well.

He arrived in Austin just before sunset and drove to the little house on 22nd street and parked beside Lee’s truck.

He went inside, hugged Lee and said, “It’s been a long strange trip. What do you say we start working on our happily ever after?”

And that they did, in each other’s arms, in the golden rays of a magical Texas sunset.

As I haven't read your other story, I was impressed by this as it stands alone. Often authors make it hard to know what is going on for readers if they don't know past connections characters have, but I didn't have any trouble with your story this way. I really enjoyed the happy ending, too. Randy was put through a lot in life, and he managed to survive--and even take some of his misfortune and turn it around to help others.

I agree with all that Lisa said. Wouldn't it be great tho if all would do as Randy did and use his misfortune to help others?

Good job James.

What Cia said times two! As soon as I'm done with the anthology stories I'm going back and reading the first part of this tale. And I look forward to the next tale. There's so much I want to know about what happened in MS, what happens at Ole Miss and of course, what happens in Austin! All you did was wet my appetite. Great story, James!

I hadn't read the previous story, either--but immediately felt comfortable with what I picked up here.

Plenty of characters to be developed here...looking forward to the next story!

Good job!

James, a sad yet sweet story. Characters were well developed and made you care for and about them. I would have loved to read more, especially about what happened when they were all going to BA together, but it was a very enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing. Great job!

What an interesting series of vignettes! I really enjoyed them. It took me back in time. The chosen family theme is quite lovely. I wonder what happens next...:)

James I enjoyed this stories. I agree that sometimes the best way to help yourself is by reaching out to help others. Randy seems to be the sort to take his pain and use it make life better for those around him. Very impressive story.
