The Sock Drawer - 8. Poker

A small gambling scene. Free verse.

Poker

Two jokers make my hand a Full House

It's the fourth highest hand you can get

So I don't bother to keep my face cool

I just wait and see how they fret

The lad just across the table is young

But he's good, and he's the only one laughing

He's won quite a sum too already

So he's either lucky or bluffing

He changes his cards and looks what he's got

Then he chucks two more chips into the pot

Two others moan weakly, saying "I'm out"

Our third man regards the young fellow with doubt

I shrug at him and throw in my chips

The man stares at his hand and chews on his lips

"I give up," he says, and the lad looks at me

I add more coins and say: "I wanna see"

He lays down his Flush and his smile gets coy

Until I start laughing "You found your master, dear boy"

A small gambling scene. Free verse.
