The Sock Drawer - 30. Shunning The Present, Revering The Past

Shunning The Present, Revering The Past

This merry-go-round is turning too fast

It's hard to hold on, with only one hand

We're hardly conscious but we're having a blast

Without real substance, just friend and a friend.

Blasted away is most of your mind

Blasting away are boots and your fist

The strangers they find are responding in kind

And you hardly notice, through silver-blue mist.

Let's meet up sometime

And have more than a chat

A real talk, a showing of mind

Let's meet up sometime

But what time is that?

Complaints about emptiness ruling your life

Rule most of your words when you're sober

And when you are not, you show me the knife

In the words used to stab your last lover.

This merry-go-round is turning too fast,

You spill your beer and your guts when you stumble

Out of your seat and my hand into dust

And still you can never look humble.

Let's meet up sometime

And have more than a chat

A real talk, a showing of mind

Let's meet up sometime

But what time is that?

Shunning the present, revering the past

You think that through age you are forced to mature

And you think that it means that nothing can last

That joy and ideals of your youth can't endure

I'm not your friend still to do nothing but this,

I don't see you to get drunk and reminisce,

I don't mistake drunken stupor for bliss,

I'm not here to listen to all that you miss,

So here's what I propose, more experience to make,

To live again by really staying awake,

Let's not spend our hours courting your abyss,

Let's fly over its depth instead and blow it a kiss.

Let's meet up today

And have more than a chat

No talk this time, just a showing of mind

Let's meet up today

Let's see what we'll get,

Let's see what you'll find.

Wonderful poem, Doc! :)

I love how the narrator wants to meet up, but he and his friend never set a day or time. Then toward the end, the narrator chooses today to meet up. He knows otherwise it probably wouldn't happen.

It's about complaining and never getting anything done - you know people like that.
