A Man in a Room, and other poems - 15. To stick at nothing

.

Poem No. 37

Selina

She has a buoyant bounce

and a knuckly knock,

an eternal question

from her startling stock,

a medley of voices

that sound all the same,

and an eye for money

that's earned her her fame.

Poem No. 38

Death is exciting.

An autumn leaf

says it better than I can.

Death is refreshing.

A newborn baby

says it better than a leaf can.

Poem No. 39

So said the sun

as it rode the water:

The world is as young

as it wants to be

and calm as it could be.

All is right right-now

because none are awake to see.

Morning Song

Poem No. 40

My dreams stick at nothing

while I'm asleep or away

They make a toil of my pleasure

by having nothing to say

So my time is wasted

spilled and depleted

Leaving me empty, and in their way.

...a motley crew, I'm sorry...

Chapter Comments

Motley? I prefer varied. No. 40 strikes me with sadness, multiplying my melancholy. That mood started building in No. 39, syllable by syllable, beat by beat, as soon as I left off puzzling over No. 38. What do newborns know of death? Yet, in some ways, they do - for their life in the womb is over, and they have entered a new world where sight joins sound, and touch is magnified. These progress from the bouncy brightness of No. 37, with one of my favorite of your phrases, the 'knuckly knock.'  No, these are not motley, but artful. Thank you.

Thank you, Parker. Your comments are fantastic and I appreciate them a great deal. Your thoughts on No. 38 particularly strike me.

Thanks once again for a truly artful review. :)

i think you're being a bit hard on your 21 year old self.  they are all good, but the line 'death is refreshing' just sticks with me. It has so many layers..

nice little crew, not at all motley! xo

Thank you, Tim. This is a great review and I always appreciate getting your thoughts. I'm glad that particular line struck you as it did. Thanks again.
