Scott's Story - 11. Chapter 11

We finally won a game! Can you believe it? It was my third game, and I made three touchdowns!

It all started when our opponents fumbled the ball on the twenty-yard line on their first play. Alex faked a pass and then handed me the ball. I ran around the left side of the field, and thanks to a couple of blocks, I scored a touchdown. The fans were going wild in the stands.

We were able to make a field goal in the second quarter, and then we went into half time with a 10-0 lead. I had never seen my teammates happier. You would have thought we had won the Super Bowl.

The coach had us settle down, and he gave us an encouraging pep talk. It made me feel good when he kept telling the team to protect me because I was going to have a better second half. Alex kept looking over and smiling at me admiringly. When we headed out onto the field for the second half, Alex and David put their arms around me and we rushed onto the field arm in arm.

The crowd went wild again. I looked up into the stands and saw Devin sitting beside his father with a wide grin on his face. I threw him a wave, and he looked around before realizing I was waving at him. He smiled and waved back.

“You ready, Killer?” Alex shouted above the crowd’s loud cheering.

“Yep.” I jumped up and down trying to psych myself up. “Let’s do this!”

We had possession of the ball. Alex received it, and I rushed around behind him. He handed me the ball, and I tucked it in tightly and tore off to the left side of the field. There were a number of opponents rushing me. I turned and saw an opening in the middle of the field. David was ahead of me and took a heavy hit. I ran past him and started running down the middle of the field.

I passed the fifty-yard line and looked back. I was alone; there was no one near me. I could hear our side cheering loudly as I ran down the field and crossed the end zone. I turned and watched the referee throw his arms in the air indicating I had made a touchdown. I bent over and tried to catch my breath as tears started to well up in my eyes.

I don’t know why, but suddenly I wished my father was here to witness this. For years told me that I would never amount to anything. But here I was with a thousand fans cheering wildly for me. I fell to the ground, covered my face and started crying.

“Come on.” I felt a pair of hands grab me by my waist and pull me to my feet. I looked into the grinning face of Alex. “This is your moment.”

He grabbed my hand and held it high as we trotted back to the sidelines to join the team. Everyone started hugging me and giving me high fives. I looked over and saw David standing alone. I walked over to him and embraced him.

“Thanks, David,” I whispered in his ear. “I couldn’t have made it without your help.” He gave me a tight squeeze and then looked into my smiling face.

“Damn! That was an awesome touchdown!” He grabbed me and hugged me again.

On our next possession David scored a touchdown when Alex threw him a 20-yard pass into the end zone. We were leading 24-6.

With less than a minute left in the game, we again had possession of the ball. The opposing team blitzed Alex, but he managed to toss David the ball. Seeing the opposing team rushing towards him, I ran over, and he handed me the ball. Our offensive linesmen were able to make a hole for me, and I ran 33 yards down field to score again. We made the extra point. The score was 31- 6.

Time ran out on our opponents. When the final buzzer rang, our fans emptied the bleachers and rushed onto the field. Alex, David and several of our players lifted me onto their shoulders and paraded me around the field. Everyone was trying to shake my hand or pat me on my back.

It was the proudest moment of my sixteen years. It seemed like that minute erased all the hurt and pain I had been feeling for years. I had accomplished something on my own with hard work and determination. For the first time in my life, I was proud of me.

The celebrating went on for about fifteen minutes. I was congratulated by people I had never met. One guy even offered me a job working in his hardware store. Aunt Marie was thrilled. She said she had been attending the school’s game for years, and she had never seen them play as well as they did tonight.

David’s father approached and pulled me into a huge bear hug. When he put me down, I looked behind him and saw Devin standing shyly, looking down at the ground.

“Aren’t you going to congratulate me?” I asked him. He looked up and started smiling. I walked over to him and opened my arms. He hesitated a moment before hugging me.

We had been talking to each other over the past week, but it seemed like we were trying to keep a safe distance between us. Most of our conversations dealt primarily with school and homework assignments. We never regained the closeness we had that night at the restaurant.

There also seemed to be a lot of pressure around us. David and Alex kept dropping hints that we should get together. They had taken us out for hamburgers on several occasions, but I usually sat beside Alex, and he would sit with David. Everyone wanted us to get together so much that it seemed to be blocking us from becoming just friends. Every time we would talk to each other, everyone was expecting it to be a monumental event. Therefore, we found it easier to just not talk.

“I’m sure you don’t need my praise,” Devin remarked sadly. “You’ve got enough admirers.” I watched as his eyes drifted to David, who was standing nearby looking at me. I could sense some animosity in his voice. Just then another fan pulled me away so I could take a picture with his young daughter. She planted a kiss on my cheek just as he took the picture.

When we entered the locker room, my teammates, led by Alex and David, took me into the shower and threw me under cold water. I stood in my wet football uniform as the team shouted and laughed. I guess after so many losing seasons, victory felt good. I was just glad I was a part of it.

After dressing, we went outside and headed to Alex’s truck. We were still high on enthusiasm. Aunt Marie, Melanie, and David’s father were waiting for us.

“We’re going out to dinner,” Mr. Gordon informed us. “My treat.”

I looked around for Devin. I saw him slumped down in the front seat of his dad’s car. I walked over and tapped on the window. He let the window down and looked up at me.

“Hey,” I tried to smile. “We’re going to dinner. Isn’t that great?”

“Yeah, whatever,” he replied unemotionally.

“Come on, Scottie!” Alex hollered as he got in his truck.

“Ride with us,” I pleaded with Devin. When he didn’t respond, I gave him a sad puppy dog face. He let a smile curl in the corner of his mouth.

“Please?” I begged, putting my hands up as if I were praying. He started to smile even more.

“Go on, Son,” Mr. Gordon said as he got in the car. “I’m getting tired of hearing him whine.”

I opened the door, grabbed Devin’s hand and pulled him out of the car. I held his hand as we walked to Alex’s truck. He got in first, sitting between me and Alex.

“Hey, Sport!” Alex said cheerfully as he tousled Devin’s hair. Devin started giggling.

We followed Mr. Gordon’s car to the restaurant. Alex and I did most of the talking. We relived the touchdown plays of the game. Alex kept telling me how proud he was of me. He even started talking about me playing varsity basketball when the season started in a few months.

“We don’t suck at basketball the way we do football,” he laughed. “We actually have a pretty decent team. With your natural athletic abilities, I think you’ll easily make the team. I’ll talk to the coach Monday morning.”

“You think I have a chance?” I asked. I was excited about playing basketball. Even though I had never played for a school, I had spent countless hours shooting baskets in the driveway of my home in Phoenix. I could easily beat anyone who dared to challenge me.

“Just come out for try-outs next month and show the coach what you got,” he said. “If you play basketball half as good as you do football, you’ll make the team.”

The restaurant was crowded when we arrived. Mr. Gordon had called ahead and reserved a large table for us. As we walked through the dining room, several people stopped me, shook my hand and congratulated me on a great game. I loved the attention, but I also felt guilty because Alex and David weren’t receiving the same treatment. Football is a team sport, and it took all of us to win.

When I finally arrived at the table, a seat had been conveniently saved for me beside Devin. Alex was sitting on my left. He looked over at me and grinned when I sat down.

Again, we talked animatedly about the game. I tried to include Alex and David’s accomplishments as much as I could. As we ate, I kept looking over at Devin. I noticed that he was mostly playing with his food and had eaten very little.

“Aren’t you hungry?” I asked him.

“Not really,” he stated. “I have a headache.”

“Sorry,” I said apologetically. I figured a lot of it had been because of all the noise during the game and the celebrating afterwards. He appeared to be in a lot of pain. I watched as he winced several times when someone let out a burst of laughter.

“Did you hear what I said, Scott?” I looked over at Alex as he looked at me awaiting an answer to a question he had obviously asked.

“What?” I asked.

“Do you want to spend the night at the Gordon’s?” He repeated the question. “David and I aren’t sleepy, and we want to party tonight.”

I looked over at Devin. “Do you mind?” I asked. He simply shrugged his shoulders apathetically.

“It’s settled then,” remarked David.

We left the restaurant, again among handshakes and well wishes. Devin rode with David back to his house. When we arrived, Devin went straight to his room. David, Alex and I watched television in the den. After his father went to bed, David went to the refrigerator and returned with three beers. He tossed one to me and another to Alex.

“Let’s celebrate!” he shouted. We ended up watching two movies and played several hands of poker. David wanted to play strip poker, but Alex didn’t think it was a good idea. He knew David was trying to think of a way to see me naked again.

It was after three when I finally admitted that I couldn’t stay up any longer. I was dead tired. I asked them where I was to sleep. David told me that Mr. Gordon had placed a sleeping bag on the floor in Devin’s room. He and Alex would sleep together in David’s queen size bed. They told me it was something they had been doing for the past twelve years.

I went into the bathroom and removed my clothes, leaving on my underwear. I carefully folded them and carried them down the hall to Devin’s room. I passed Alex and David in the hallway. As I walked past, David pinched me on my ass. I stifled a squeal of surprise. They walked down the hall laughing at my reaction.

Devin slept with a night light on, so I was able to find my way to the sleeping bag. I settled in and listened to Devin lightly snoring in the bed above me.

“MOMMY! DON’T DIE MOMMY!”

I was startled out of my sleep by Devin screaming loudly. I looked up and saw him sitting wild-eyed in the bed. He was screaming and crying uncontrollably. He had just had a terrible nightmare.

I quickly sprang up and got into bed with him. I positioned myself behind him and held him tightly, just as Alex had done with me in the field my first night here.

I squeezed him tightly and started humming into his ear as I rocked him gently. He tried to break away from my arms, but I refused to let him go. He kept screaming and trembling.

“MOMMY! MOMMY! DON’T DIE! PLEASE DON’T DIE!”

The bedroom light came on, and Mr. Gordon, David and Alex rushed into the room. When they saw me rocking Devin in my arms, Mr. Gordon grabbed David and Alex and led them out of the room. He looked back at me and nodded. He then turned out the light and closed the door.

I continued to hum and rock Devin. After a while, he began to settle down. I could feel him relaxing into my body. Several minutes later, he fell back asleep. I carefully positioned him on his side and then lay down beside him. I pulled him into my body and put my arm protectively around him. He nestled closer into me and grabbed my arm before falling back to sleep.

I lay for a long time clutching him tightly. I couldn’t imagine the torture that was going on inside his head. The accident was four years ago, but to him it was something he had to live with every day of his life. Tears filled my eyes as I thought about what he had to endure. I did manage to fall asleep with him nestled safely into me.

The sun was shining through the window when I awoke. I was lying on my back, and Devin was still beside me with his arm thrown over my chest and his head cradled against my neck.

I felt him stirring gently. He sprang up and looked astonishingly at me. I guess he had suddenly become aware of the position we were in. He probably was afraid that I would be mad at him, but I had enjoyed the close contact we shared.

“Sorry,” he apologized and jumped quickly from the bed. I giggled to myself when I saw him grab his erection which was straining through his pajamas. Minutes later, I heard him taking a shower.

Alex came walking into the room, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He was in his underwear, and his cock was at full mast. I had gotten so used to seeing it, that it no longer excited me.

“Are you all right?” he asked worriedly.

“Yeah,” I smiled. “Everything’s good.”

“That was really nice of you,” he said, “what you did with Devin. I’ve been over here before when he’s had a nightmare. He can carry on for an hour. You had him quiet in about ten minutes.”

“I had a good teacher,” I smiled. He patted my shoulder, rose and left the room. I stared at his tight ass as he walked out. It may be a sight I had grown accustomed to, but it was still one that I always enjoyed.

When I went to school on Monday, everyone was still talking about our win on Friday night. Several teachers even congratulated me on my game in front of the class. I would blush when they spoke about me.

It also felt good. Back in California I had been the center of attention; however, that was because I had bullied everyone into liking me. Here I was liked because of something that I had accomplished.

Devin seemed more relaxed around me. He would walk beside me in the hallway to class. Instead of walking away when someone would stop me in the hallway to talk, he would remain by my side. I would try to include him in the conversation, if I could.

He was also getting cuter. He had stopped wearing those dorky glasses and had started wearing his contact lenses. He already had pretty brown eyes, but the slight tint in the lenses made his eyes shine. I loved it when he looked at me and smiled.

He also started dressing more like a teenager. David told me one day that he and his dad had taken Devin shopping at a nearby mall. He said they were there an entire afternoon helping him pick out a new wardrobe.

After lunch, we went to geometry class. Mr. Stanford was out sick, so we had a substitute. She wrote the assignment on the board, and then she told us to work quietly. Devin pulled his chair next to mine so that we could share his book.

We were doing a problem, when Devin suddenly spoke, “Do you like me?” I looked over and saw him staring into my eyes.

“Yes, I like you.” I smiled and nudged him in his side. We continued working quietly.

“I like you too,” he whispered as he continued to work. He had his hand on the table, and I placed mine against his so that they were barely touching. He looked down and rubbed his little finger against my hand. It was a simple gesture, but it made me feel good.

The rest of the week was spent preparing for Friday night’s game. Because of our spectacular win the week before, the team was excited about beating this week’s opponent. It was a team who we had lost to for the past six years. We were determined to beat them this year.

Friday night arrived, and we were ready. The coach gave his usually pep talk and we headed out onto the field. Our side exploded into loud cheers when we ran onto the field. There wasn’t an empty seat in the stands.

We were evenly matched. Neither of us were able to score the first half. We went into the locker room scoreless. The coach assured us that this was a positive accomplishment, because the past few years we were usually about 20 points or more behind at halftime. We went onto the field the second half determined to win.

Our opponents scored six minutes into the third quarter. A defensive player slammed into Alex, causing him to fumble the ball. They retrieved the ball and ran in for a touchdown. They made the extra point. The score was 7-0.

The prospect of a win was beginning to look elusive as the game wound down. With twenty seconds left in the game, we received the ball on a punt at their thirty-five-yard line. On the first play, Alex threw the ball to David for an 18-yard gain. I looked up at the clock, and we only had 11 seconds to go.

Alex called the play. I was to receive the hand off and go around to the right side of the field. Our offensive linesmen were to open up a hole for me to charge through. We all knew this would be our last play of the game.

The center handed the ball off to Alex, and he faded back as if he was going to pass to David. I raced around behind him, and he tossed me the ball. I could hear clashing sounds all around me. Suddenly, I saw an opening created by the linesmen. My heart was pounding as I ran through the hole. I tore off down the field with only one defensive player chasing me. He leapt at me, grabbing me by my leg. I felt I was going to go down; but with raging adrenaline, I pulled my leg free and continued to run. I could hear the roar of the crowd urging me on. I fell across the end zone, gasping for breath.

Suddenly, my team mates were pulling me up. They informed me that time had run out on the clock and we had one attempt to tie the game. The score was 7-6.

We took our positions, and I looked over at Alex. He was going to attempt the extra point. As he was calling out the numbers, he looked at me and winked. Instinctively, I understood what he wanted me to do. He didn’t want to tie the game, he wanted to win it!

He received the ball and acted as if he was going to kick it. I ran towards him, and he handed me the ball. I tore off to the left side, then pivoted back to the right. I had completely stumped the defensive players. I saw an opening and charged for the end zone. At the last minute, a defensive linesman knelt to block me. I leapt over his shoulder and fell across the line.

I heard the crowd roaring in the distant as I lay exhausted on the ground. Alex ran over and lifted me as if I was a rag doll and cradled me in his arms.

“You did it, Scottie!” Tears were falling down his cheeks. “You won the game for us!”

I don’t even remember what happened next. All I remember was being hugged and kissed by everyone. I had to hold onto Alex as he helped me to the locker room. When we entered, Mr. Gordon and Devin were waiting for us. Devin was standing with the biggest grin I had ever seen. He ran up to me and hugged me.

Mr. Gordon again took us out for a celebration dinner. It took me twice as long to get to my seat as I had the week before. Everyone wanted to congratulate me. Several people even asked me for my autograph.

Devin never left my side. He stood beside me beaming with pride as people congratulated me. When we finally sat down at our table, he scooted his chair nearer to mine. At one point, I even reached under the table and held his hand for a moment. When I squeezed his hand, he blushed and returned the squeeze. He hungrily ate everything on his plate. I was happy when he reached over and grabbed a handful of my fries.

No not already!!!!!!!

Too soon for Devin to start stealing fries?  ;–)

Scottie is finally getting to know what it’s like to be recognized positively for his accomplishments. It only took three tries (his parents, his uncle, and now his aunt and cousin). After having been introduced, Alex’s sister just dropped off the surface of the earth…  ;–)
