Timothy - 27. Chapter 27
“Stephen, call Mom and let her know we won’t be there for Sunday dinner.”
I called my mom to let her know we would be down for the weekend. “Mom, tell Randy that Stephen wants to talk about his computer systems.”
“Tim, Dad said he showed your lease agreement to his lawyer. He wanted to know who drafted it. Dad said he was concerned about losing Dad as a client.”
“Maybe we can stop over some night. We can visit in the evening.”
That Friday evening, we stopped at Stephan’s mom and dad’s home. Dad had to tell us about his lawyer’s reaction to the new lease.
Saturday morning, we headed south. We passed by Mrs. Kenner’s house, so we stopped to say hello. She said she missed us. Looking at her yard and flower beds, we knew why she missed us.
Arriving home, Randy was sitting on the porch waiting for us. Even before we got out of the car, he was opening Stephen’s door. When Stephen got out of the car, he grabbed Randy and tossed him over his shoulders. I was surprised but not as surprised as Randy. Mom came out of the house when she heard Randy yell.
I got a hug, and Randy got a swat on his bum. Stephen got a kiss on his cheek. “Mom, a kiss?”
She laughed. I got my kiss.
We took our luggage into the house, where Dad and Mrs. Olman greeted us.
“Tim, we planned on having a late lunch. Eva will be here with her intended. When I told her you were coming for the weekend, she wanted you to meet him. I’ll let you draw your conclusions, but Eva wants your opinion.”
“I would like to meet him. Is he that young doctor she was dating?”
“I don’t know. You can ask her. Here she comes.”
“I thought you said a late lunch?” Just then, Eva entered the house and grabbed me in a hug. I whispered in her ear, “You need to give someone else a hug.”
I’m now sure what happened, but she hugged Randy and then when she saw Stephen, She hugged him.
“I didn’t see Stephen, and I thought you meant Randy. Tim, Mom, said you have a very nice home.”
“Thanks, you and your good doctor need to visit us. I can show you where Stephen and I work and perhaps a little bit of the town.”
Before she could answer, a young man walked into the house. “Tim, Stephen, this is Dr. John Aspin, my boyfriend.”
“With that ring on your finger, I would say he’s a little more than a boyfriend. I’m Tim, the brother. This is Stephen, my husband.” I waited for a reaction, and there was none.
“I’m glad to meet you, both of you. Your sister has been touting your horn so much, that I was anxious to meet you.”
Then from the living room, “Hi Doc.”
“Hi, Randy.”
I chuckled.
“They are good friends, and I hope you and Stephen will become good friends with John as well.”
“If you like him, then we will support both of you.” Whispering in her ear, “When is the big day?”
“This coming September, we haven’t picked the exact date, but I’ll let you know.”
“Mom, Dad, we have to leave. We are on duty in an hour. I just wanted to stop by and introduce John to Tim and Stephen.”
Hugging Eva, “He seems like a nice guy. I like him, and I know by the look in your eyes, you will be happy.”
Eva and I have been close, and there is nothing more I would want for her than for her to be happy.
“Mom, is there anything you need for dinner? Randy is going to drive us around town.” I looked at Randy when I said that. He hadn’t offered, but I knew he would do it.
I hadn’t been away from home long, but there were some changes. The ice cream parlor has become a fast-food restaurant, and there was a bowling alley as well.
We stopped at Donnie’s parent’s goat farm, and there was a for sale sign out front. “Randy, did you know they were selling the farm?”
“Yes, Mr. Parker has retired, and they want to move closer to Mrs. Parker’s sister.”
“What did they do with the goats?”
“They sold them to the Jesses who own that farm down by the stream.”
“I’m going to miss their goat cheese. It’s the best I have eaten.” When we stayed at Mrs. Kenner’s, I would buy the goat cheese at that grocery store where we shopped for Mrs. Olman. It was just okay.
Driving back to my parent’s home, I thought about Donnie and the times we spent on that farm.
“Tim, you okay?”
“Yes, I was thinking about the times Donnie and I had on that farm. It was a safe place for us. We didn’t have to worry about kids calling us names or causing problems. It was our haven. And now it will be gone. I guess that’s life.”
Dinner was excellent. Mom knew how much I liked vegetables, so she made a vegetable casserole that was my favorite. Before we head home, I want that recipe.
“You’re unusually quiet, Tim. Something bothering you?”
“Today, we stopped at Parker’s farm. Mr. Parker has retired, and they are moving closer to Mrs. Parker’s sister. That farm was part of my history with Donnie. I guess change is inevitable.”
That night we slept in my old room. Randy offered the bed, taking one of the sleeping bags. “Randy, that is your bed. You sleep there. We will be okay.”
Sleep didn’t come easy. I must have been disturbing Stephen. He grabbed me and pulled me into his arms. “You’re dreaming. Everything is okay.”
As I nestled in his arms, I fell into a deep sleep, but I wasn’t alone. I was sitting on the bank of the stream behind the farm. Donnie was sitting beside me. “Timmy, buy the farm. It belongs to us.”
I woke in a start and woke Stephen. “I’m going to buy the farm.” I fell back to sleep.
