A Love to Last - 2. Chapter 2: Destiny at work. Will it favor Jim or Ben?
“And that is all for my presentation.” Ben said with a smile on his face. “I believe this is something new that our clients will like.”
There were claps and cheers in the board room as everyone cheered for young Ben for his powerful presentation. All except for one, Elena who stared at him with such hatred. But he didn’t mind. He knew the other members loved it.
Ben was at ‘Sunshine empire builders’ his father’s company because Elena had specifically asked him to present to her the sketches he had made. He was dressed formally in a pink shirt that was tucked in a black tight trouser with black shoes on his feet. His hair was tied in a ponytail and he looked amazing.
Elena threw the file she was holding on the table angrily.
“Not this bullshit again.” She said harshly, sitting back on the chair like a boss. “I don’t know why all of you are clapping but this was absolutely nonsense. I feel like I’ve heard this from you before. Oh wait…” She chirped, staring at him with an evil green. “…it’s literally the same piece of trash you’ve been presenting to me.”
Ben lost the smile on his face, feeling like he had been stabbed in the face. The other members too stopped clapping and began staring at Elena. They were just as shocked as Ben was.
“And what did you think? That I was gonna approve such a trashy presentation? Don’t you know how classy our company is? You wanna bring us down?”
To say Ben was shocked would be an understatement.
“But I did present something new, Auntie Elena.”
“Madam…” She barked, swinging her finger in the air. “…never auntie. And that isn’t something new. I would be ashamed to even pitch such an idea to the clients. Haven’t you learned anything by hanging out with Jim? Have you looked at his architecture designs? Such high-class designs, different and top-notch. They have been loved by all our clients.”
“But Madam…” One of the members in the conference said. “…I think Ben has such great ideas. I don’t think there’s anything wrong. Besides, Mr. Henandez already pitched the idea to the clients and they loved it.”
“Oh really?” She chuckled bitterly, resting her chin on her hand. “Well, fortunately, I had a talk with the clients and offered them the best designs. That’s what we’re gonna go with. This meeting is over. All of you can leave.”
Everyone picked up their things and left, except for Elena and Ben.
“I don’t understand. I have been sketching a lot. You know how good I am and dad…”
“Unfortunately, I am not as stupid as your father.” She said angrily, getting up elegantly from the chair. “You think you can compete with my son? Not a chance, Ben. Whatever you sketch is gonna be as inferior and second rate as you. You think you can outshine my son? You’re such a big dreamer.”
“I am not trying to compete with Jim. I am just trying to help and earn a place in my father’s company.” He was so hurt but he didn’t wanna cry. “But…”
“Enough!” She raised her hand, stopping him mid-way. “As long as I am alive, you’ll never be happy, Ben. That’s my promise to you. Your whore of a mother would have skipped my husband.”
Ben closed his eyes, feeling tears building in his eyes. “Please, don’t insult my mother.”
“I will insult her however I want because I can.” She yelled, pointing at him. “Truth hurts, doesn’t it? But you need to face facts, you’re a bastard son, an illegitimate son, a son of a whore. That’s what you are. Your mother seduced my husband and that’s how you were conceived. Did I leave anything else?”
Ben opened his eyes, wiping his tears.
“You’re not gonna inherit a penny of my husband’s companies. As long as I live, Ben, your place will always be on the ground.”
Ben wiped his face clean, picked up his files and began rushing out of there.
“And just so you know, you don’t qualify to work here.” She laughed. “When you graduate, the only thing you’ll be able to land here is a janitor’s job. While my son will be running this company, you’ll be wiping his shoes and cleaning toilets.”
Ben quickly left, not mind how evil she was laughing. He was supposed to be used to it by now, but each time she said something, it always felt like a new wound had been opened. But guess that was what he was destined for, to suffer at her hands for the rest of his life. After all, his mother was the cause of it.
***
“Sir, sir…”
“Huh?” He gasped, getting out his thoughts. “What did you say? Sorry.”
“We’re at the destination.” The taxi driver said with a smile. “Are you okay? Something seems to be bothering you.”
He smiled sheepishly and shook his head. “I am fine.”
He quickly paid him ands left the car. He was standing in front of the beautiful and luxurious hotel that was closer to his school. He had come to meet his father and his brother for the celebration he had promised him. He felt so stupid and inferior just like she had called him. He knew very well that he didn’t deserve any celebration after the encounter with his step mother.
But he also knew he had to try his best to forget about what had happened. He needed to be happy around his father and his brother. That was what he was gonna do.
But on the contrary, he was still bothered. He was walking slowly towards the entrance as his mind replayed every single hateful word she had said that morning. He didn’t even realize that he was looking like a zombie.
Suddenly, he heard a thud and it got him out of his reverie. He found his file on the floor with some papers almost coming out. Shit! He shook his head and leaned to pick the file up. That was when he heard it, the screeching of tires so loud.
He quickly raised his head to find a surprise, the body of the car right in his face. Ben’s heart hammered in his chest as sharp and shallow breaths started coming out. He felt weak and scared that he visibly trembled. Before his mind could even process the whole thing…
“What the hell is wrong with you? Are you stupid?” He heard an angry voice, a deep manly voice. “Do you wanna commit suicide? What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Ben could hear the blood pounding in his ears as it rushed through. He felt cold and he became very pale and sweaty. Tears built in his eyes and he couldn’t do anything. He just kept staring at the hood of the car in his face.
“Hey, what the fuck!” The man continued. “If you have a suicide mission, not on my car. What kind of stupid person are you? I am talking to you.”
Ben somehow gathered his strength, picked up his file and quickly rose.
“Hey, I am talking to you. Do you wanna fucking die? Are stu…”
“I am sorry, please forgive me.” He quickly raised his head and just stared into the man’s face. “I was just absent minded, I had no idea there was a car coming.”
But that was it, the man just stared back at him like he was frozen, neither blinking no saying a word.
“I am sorry for the trouble. Please, forgive me.” He put his hands together. His voice was trembling. “I’ll pay attention next time. I hope I didn’t cause any damage.”
But the man couldn’t still say a word. He just kept on staring at him like he was searching for something in his face. No one had ever stared at him like that. It scared him to the core.
“Sir!” His voice was barely above a whisper. “Please, don’t be mad at me. I just had something on my mind.”
Still… no word.
The man that stared at him was a very handsome man, from his beautiful shiny dark hair that he had cut on the sides and well combed in the middle, his captivating handsome face, his well shaven beards, the way he was dressed and the car he drove. He had to be some businessman or some politician’s son.
“Sir, I am sorry.”
“It’s… it’s fine.” He finally spoke in a calm voice. But his eyes never left the boy. “Are you hurt? Did the car bump into you? It was my fault; I’ll take responsibility for that.”
“No, I am… I am okay.”
“I’ll take you to the hospital. You need a full medical checkup.”
“No, I am fine.”
Ben couldn’t believe that was the same man shouting at him earlier. He sounded so calm and so sweet. It was almost unbelievable.
“Are you sure? There could be some internal injuries. You never know these things.”
Ben laughed softly, shaking his head. “No, I am fine. The car never even touched me. I’ll be fine, sir.”
“You sure? Maybe let me buy you something, lunch with me. To apologize for my behavior earlier. Please.”
“It’s okay. I am meeting my family here for lunch anyways. But thanks a lot, sir.”
He turned and started heading inside without even realizing that the man was staring at him like he was an angel, drop dead gorgeous. Whatever the man saw in him, only he could answer.
“You’re so beautiful!” He whispered under his breath.
He didn’t even realize he had been staring for a long time. He only knew the boy was no longer in his view when a car behind him honked angrily and shouted for him to get out of the way. He smiled before he entered the car and drove off. God knows he was hoping to meet the boy again.
***
“Hey, where were you? You kept us waiting.” Jim complained as he hugged his brother. “Dad was so tired of waiting that he had to leave.”
“Dad left?” He gasped as he took a seat, looking all around. “Why? I thought we were supposed to celebrate together.”
They were in a classy restaurant at a five star hotel. They were quite a number of people, each enjoying a delicious expensive meal.
“Mom called him about a meeting that they’re having but he did promise to schedule another day.” He said as he took a sip of his hot chocolate. “Speaking of mom, how did the meeting go with her and the client?”
Ben sighed but wore a very convincing smile. “It went great, actually. Better than I had expected. The client loved the designs and they’re going with them.”
“Bad man!” Jim saluted, smiling like a kid. “I always knew you were gonna impressive them. I told you that one day, you’re gonna impress mom. Did she say anything?”
Ben chuckled nervously. “She had a lot to say.” He said as he gestured for the waiter to come to their table. “A lot that I hadn’t expected so I think she’s coming around.” He was lying through his teeth. “She must have shouted here and there but I think I saw her smile.”
“Mom?” Jim raised an eyebrow. “Are you lying to me, Ben? You know if you are, I’ll eventually find out.”
“Why would I lie to a person who’s literally my shadow. I have no reason to.”
“Oh wow.” Jim laughed, shaking his head. “You got that right. But I have been telling you, give mom a chance. She’s not as bad as she looks. She loves you despite everything that she says.”
Ben smiled, nodding.
The waiter brought the menu and they ordered their lunch. The meal was delicious and the brothers couldn’t help but nod as they enjoyed the meal over a very wonderful conversation. They were loud at times but no one seemed bothered.
“What do you mean?” Jim laughed. “Sean and I only had a one time thing and it ended that night when that bitch decided to lay her hands on you. I am done with him.”
“Are you serious?”
Jim shrugged. “He’s straight, isn’t he? He can go back to his boyfriend. I wanted a taste, I got the taste. Now I want a different thing.”
“You’re crazier than I thought.” Ben laughed. “Why don’t you just find a man, stick to him and date him. How many men have you dated this year? Six?”
“7.” Jim said with a raised shoulder. “But that’s besides the point. What’s the purpose of dating one man when I can have anyone that I want. Besides, I don’t think I have met that man who gives me the thrill of going into a relationship with. Someone whose touch will feel like it’s giving me chills, someone who will make me so crazy in love with him. Right now, I am having fun with all these boys who are going crazy about me.”
“You’re unbelievable.” Ben rolled his eyes.
“Speaking of boys, what about you?”
“What about me?” Ben knew where the conversation was going but he didn’t wanna talk about it.
“You’re young… you’re beautiful… you’re hot… you’re sexy. You’re literally the other hot boy I know besides me.” He was staring right at the boy that didn’t wanna stare back. “When are you gonna find another boy? Don’t tell me you’re still not over Brandon? It’s been like what, 3 years? There are lots of boys that want you, accept one.”
Ben chuckled nervously. “I am okay as I am currently. I haven’t met, Mr. right. And Brandon is in my past. What we had was over 3 years ago and I have moved on. It’s better not to think so much about it. I am okay as I am. Besides, I don’t need someone that’s gonna take my freedom away.”
Brandon… Ben’s first and only love. They had been so much in love with each other but the ending had been tragic. She had managed to destroy his relationship like she had promised. He could remember it like it was yesterday when he met his boyfriend and found him all beat up with bruises on his face. Someone claiming to be Ben’s lover had beat him up so bad he had broken his hand and leg.
It had ended their relationship. Brandon had moved abroad and Ben had never heard from him again. It had taken him so many months to move on and now he had. Let’s just say he was scared of getting into anything knowing that Elena was gonna try and destroy it. She was never gonna see him happy.
“Earth to Ben.” Jim snapped his fingers in his face. “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing. Just how delicious this food is.”
“Yeah, right.” Jim laughed. “I am sure it’s about Brandon. You really never did tell me what happened between the two of you. One minute you’re so much in love and the next you’ve broken up. Before I knew what was going, he was leaving and no one has heard anything from him.”
“We broke. There was nothing much to that.” Ben wasn’t in the mood to talk about it. “I am sure wherever he is, he’s very happy with someone that loves him a lot.”
“Yeah, but you also need to be happy. Whatever…”
And that was it for Jim. The moment he raised his face and looked past Ben, he saw a sight to behold. God! Even everything stopped moving, time, wind, even his world. His heart pounded so much, he thought everyone in the restaurant heard it. His breaths came out harshly and he felt a shiver go down his spine.
Jim had never seen such a gorgeous man his entire life. Shit! That face, those lips… that smile as he spoke to whoever, but he didn’t care. His pink lips, inviting him to kiss them. He looked like one of those models from TVs but this one was a reality. He was right there in front of his eyes.
He whole a black designer suit that was fitted on him like a second skin with a red shirt inside. He watched him sip his coffee and Jim wished he was that cup. Fuck! He didn’t know what he felt whether it was lust or love. But he knew he immediately loved the man.
“Earth to Jim.”
Jim snapped out of his mood but his eyes never left the man.
“Jim?” Ben was confused. “Dude, why are you zoning out?”
“My God, Ben.” He moaned loudly. “He’s so cute. Please, tell me I am dreaming. This has to be a dream.” He slightly slapped himself. “Fucking sexy hunk.”
Ben frowned, wondering what his brother was talking about.
“Who?”
“That man over there, right behind you near the window.”
Ben quickly looked behind and all he saw was a man seated near the window with a smile talking on the phone. He seemed to be with a woman and two children whom he assumed were his kids. He couldn’t believe that Jim had reached that extent.
“Isn’t he so dreamy?”
“Are you serious?”
“My soulmate, Ben.” Jim gripped Ben’s hand and gripped it so hard. He was freaking nervous. “I have finally found him, the man of my dreams. He’s literally the way I have imagined him to be. How do I look?” He asked as he rubbed his mouth with a napkin. “Do I look presentable? Do you think he might like me?”
“Are you serious? Don’t be crazy. Jim?” He almost yelled.
But it was too late. Jim was already heading to the table where the hunk was seated. He tried to follow him but heard his phone ring. He quickly picked it.
“Hello!”
***
“Are you serious?” The lady laughed her lungs. “You didn’t have to do that. That’s crazy.”
“I am the definition of crazy. Besides, you told me to tell you something crazy that I did while I was abroad.”
David was having lunch with his sister, Amber. The two were having fun and had gone out after a very long time. David was a very handsome 23-year-old man, son to late business tycoon, George Paola and the fashion goddess Catherine. He had come home after finishing his studies abroad and was now back to run the empire together with his mother. They owned several businesses including an airline company and a hospital.
His sister, Amber was in her second year studying law and she was great at it. She was a 19-year-old girl, very beautiful like her mother. She had long brunette hair that she had made into a braided ponytail, and was wearing a black dress that showed off her curves. Really, their table was really a sight for sore eyes.
“I missed you a lot.” Amber said with a smile. “I am glad you’re back now. I thought I’d go crazy talking to mom. That woman doesn’t know humor at all. She’s always serious.”
“Ha ha ha…” He laughed. “I’ll make sure to deliver that message.”
“You wouldn’t dare.” She shook her head.
“Bribe me.” He said, folding his arms on his chest. “Perhaps I’ll reconsider.”
“Lucky for me, she’s not in town.” Amber said with a raised eyebrow. “And I know that you wouldn’t dare do that to your sweet sister.”
David was about to respond when…
“Excuse me!” A voice spoke, getting both their attention. “Hi!”
When they looked, they found a very handsome boy waving at them with a billion-dollar smile. His eyes were definitely on the hunk.
“Hi!” Amber answered, waving nervously.
“Do you mind if I join you?” He asked. “Pardon my manners, my name is Jim Henandez.”
“Jim?” Amber nodded. “Nice to meet you. I hope we’re not in trouble? We aren’t making so much noise, are we? If we are, then I am so sorry.”
David looked away and took a sip of his milkshake. He wasn’t that interested.
“Of course, not.” Jim said happily, taking a seat. “I was seated on my table over there and I just thought of coming to say hi to you and your…” He paused, hoping Amber was gonna finish. “…boyfriend.”
Amber laughed, glaring at her brother. “Him? Of course, not. I am Amber and this is David. He’s my brother.”
“Interesting.” Jim felt his heart jump. “Nice to meet the both of you.” He greeted Amber excitedly and extended his hand to David.
David looked at the hand and quickly shook it. Jim could have sworn he felt like he had connected his hand to a cable of electricity. It was exquisite.
“I don’t usually do this, but David… do you mind if you shared your line with me?” He asked sheepishly, feeling like his heart was about to run away.
Amber chuckled where she sat, winking at her brother who was staring back at her. She knew that Jim was interested in her brother. It was obvious.
“I know this seems weird and sudden, but I would love to keep in touch and hopefully know you a little more.” He put his hands together, giving puppy eyes. “Please, don’t say no. It took a lot of courage to approach your table. And besides, you seem like a gentleman. And no gentleman has ever denied me of anything before.”
To say David was surprised would be an understatement. He was supposed to be used to men and women approaching him with their offers but this one was different. Normally, he would have given the number but he was hesitant. He kept on staring at the handsome man without saying a word.
“David.” Amber got him out of his thoughts. “The handsome man is waiting.”
“Right.” He cleared his throat. “It’s…”
But that was it. His eyes caught something that got his attention. A boy moving hurriedly towards the entrance. That hair, he thought as he followed each and every movement he made. The skin, the clothes and when he saw his face, David felt his heard give a thud in his chest and he groaned, almost painfully. He saw that beautiful boy once again and his heart began racing… his mind totally got caught and he couldn’t think of anything else.
“Excuse me!”
He rose from the chair like the hounds of hell were after him, running after the boy. When he came outside, he found the boy entering a taxi and he tried to chase it but too bad he couldn’t. His car was parked so far away that he had no chance of finding the car.
“Shit!” He cursed, stamping his foot on the floor. “You stupid man, David. You’ve lost him again. You had one chance of talking to him and you blew it.”
David didn’t care what happened but he knew he had to see the boy again.
***
David was seated on the swing in the garden of his mansion with one leg crossed. He had his mind on the tablet he was holding, going through some files. He was wearing a black short and white vest.
“Hey!” He heard his sister’s voice. “I thought I’d find you here. What are you doing?”
She offered a cup of coffee to him and he took it, thanking her.
“Nothing much, just going through some work.” He sighed as he took a sip. “I need to go through some documents so that I will be ready by next week. Mom wants to be more involved in managing the company.”
“That’s good. You’ve grown up so much. It’s so cute.”
“You’re one to talk.” He rolled his eyes.
Amber laughed as she sat with him, resting her head on his shoulder.
“By the way, I had forgotten to ask. Why did you leave like that at the restaurant? Next thing I knew, you were calling that we needed to leave. I didn’t even finish my lunch and you owe me that.” She said, slightly hitting him. “Were you so nervous to give your line to that handsome boy?” She laughed. “I have never known you as a coward.”
“Oh no!” He shook his head. “Your head is so far ahead. But since you’re asking, I’ll tell you.”
Amber raised her head and paid attention. She was dying to hear his explanation.
“When I was coming to meet you at the restaurant, I almost got into an accident.” He sighed. “There was a boy that I almost ran over. I was so upset with him that I shouted at him but when I looked at that boy…” He paused and a smile began forming on his face. “…I don’t know what I felt. It is nothing like I have felt before. He’s so handsome, very very handsome but he’s also calm… his smile… that smile got my head spinning.” He chuckled, feeling his heart begin to race.
“I don’t know what happened but… I saw that boy leaving the restaurant again. At that moment, I knew I had to talk to him. So I gathered my courage and chased after him. But when I got out, he was already in a taxi going out.”
Amber was interested. She was staring at her brother like he’d grown another head.
“This is both interesting and shocking. I can’t believe a boy got you so speechless that you couldn’t even talk to him.” She teased, shaking her head. “And here I was thinking my brother was on top of his game.”
“This was different.” He had a stern look on his face. “Up to this moment, no boy has ever made me feel this way. It’s not just his face, but there’s something about him that keeps drawing me to him. I don’t know what but I want to see him again.”
“Oh, that is so sweet.” Amber moaned, wrapping his arms around him. “You will find him. Besides, you’re David Paola, a very hot guy. If you weren’t my brother, I would have been falling for you too.”
“Eeew…” He laughed, getting up from the swing. “…that is creepy. I wouldn’t even imagine dating you. You’re such a pain.”
He laughed as he headed inside.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Amber asked as she followed him. “David?”
***
Ben was seated on his bed with his small table, his mind focused on the sketches he was making. They were so good. He knew they were so good but his mind was on what Elena had said to him that morning.
"Not this again.
No matter what you do, your designs will never be as good as my son's.
The only thing you're good for is cleaning my son's shoes and being a janitor."
He stopped what he was doing and started reliving those nightmares, those hateful words. It wasn't the first time she had uttered those words. Even as a kid, he had been able to make very nice sketches and had actually impressed his father and his clients. But when she found out, she had been so pissed that she had beaten him up for it. But that still didn't stop him from doing what he loved.
'Even if I won't be working in my father's empire, I can always use my skills for something else.'
Ben was gotten out of his thoughts when he heard the door to his room opening. It was Jim and he was busy staring at his phone like he expected something to come out of there. He sat on Ben's bed without greeting him and just continued being on his phone.
"What seems to be so important that you can't even greet me?" Ben asked, trying to look at Jim's phone. He was on facebook. "What are you doing?"
"I'm trying to look for the man of my dreams. But I have been at it for hours and still can't find a thing. I can't find his sister's account either." He sighed. "I have tried instagram, Twitter and now Facebook but nothing. I feel like I'm going insane."
Ben frowned, wondering what his brother was even talking about.
"But why? I thought you went to talk to him. Didn't you get anything from him?"
"Just his first name. When he was about to give me his line, he just left out of the blue. I would have gotten from his sister but next thing I know, she is leaving too."
"Maybe it has to do with the fact that he's married." Ben rolled his eyes. "I can't believe you were actually talking about a married man."
"What?" Jim laughed. He was confused. "What are you talking about?"
"The man you showed me back there was older with two children and a woman. I assumed that was his wife, right? Where did you even get the courage to approach his table?"
Jim burst into laughter when he heard what Ben had just said. He laughed so much that tears of mirth began coming out the side of his eye.
"Wait? Is that the reason why you left without me? You were scared someone was gonna beat you again? Come on, you know I can't do anything with a married man. That's disgusting."
"No, that isn't the reason why I left. I had to submit something I forgot so that was why I left." Ben laughed nervously. "And the man that I saw was..."
"You saw the wrong man. My prince charming was the most handsome man that was in that restaurant.
Ben rolled his eyes. "Every man is the most handsome to you, Jim. As long as you have some interest in him then he's automatically the most handsome. You said the same thing about Sean."
Jim chuckled, holding Ben's hand. "This one is different. I am telling you, Ben, that man is the one. I don't know him yet but I'm gonna do whatever I can to make sure that I know him and we get together."
"Don't get your hopes up, my dear sweet brother. Sometimes, things do not go as planned."
"No man has ever rejected my advances till date. Especially, this one because he's my future husband. He's my final destination. I just know it."
Ben sighed, staring straight into the face of his brother.
"And what will you do when you realize that this man is dating already or he's in love with someone?"
Jim laughed. "He's got no choice but to choose me. Just look at me." He got up and spun around. "That man to reject me has not been born yet. Just give it time, I'll be introducing him to you as your future brother in law."
Ben burst into laughter, still staring at his brother. "You know, Jim, I have seen you act like this before. But if you truly think this man is the right man then I'll support you... in the background." He laughed, hitting him arm. "You deserve all the love this world can provide. If he's the one then not even the world can stop the both of you from being together."
"Oh!" Jim moaned, wrapping his arms tightly around him. "You're the sweetest brother. I just know I can count on you for anything. Now that I've found mine, I will help you find yours. We're gonna tie him and lock him up in your room."
"You're insane." Ben moved away from Jim and threw a pillow at him. "We are not kidnapping anyone."
"I am just saying. Otherwise, you're gonna die a virgin."
"I just don't want to fall for the wrong guy." He said, pretending to do something.
Jim took his sketch book away. "No, you're just looking for someone like Brandon. But it's easy, let's just search for his name on social media like I am doing. You guys can rekindle your love."
"Don't be ridiculous, Jim." Ben lost the smile on his face. "We've both moved on."
"Have you, though?" He raised his eyebrow. "Prove to me then. Find a guy and love him. It's not difficult. There are lots of guys, rich guys that are willing to kiss your feet. Have fun while you're still young. Look at me, I have been having fun and now I just met someone I wanna spend the rest of my life with. I can hook you up with his brother, if he has one."
Ben burst into laughter. "Come on, don't be crazy. I’m sure when I meet my prince charming, I will recognize him without any help from you. That I know."
The two boys had a wonderful chat about boys and their future. It was a beautiful sight to see.
***
“Yes, mommy, I have gotten enough clothes.” Jim said as scanned the designer clothes in front of him. “I told you that I have enough clothes to last me for a life time.”
‘You can never have too many clothes, baby.’ Elena spoke on the other end of the phone. ‘Besides, you’re a Henandez and that means a lot of people have their eyes on you. You don’t want to be on the cover of any magazine or a newspaper with a bad picture with bad clothes.”
He laughed. “Okay, got you mother. You have always told me how important it is to represent ourselves out there.”
‘It’s just you. I don’t care about Ben or whatever he calls himself. Besides, no one is interested in him. He’s nothing but an illegitimate child.’
“Mom?” The tone Jim used was displeasing. “Can we not talk about him? Besides, you know how much he doesn’t care about what everyone thinks of him or how he dresses. He wouldn’t have come with me even if I had forced him to.”
‘Good!’ She hissed. ‘One day, you’re gonna see what I see in that boy. He’s nothing but trash, just like his mother. Nothing good can come out of a whore’s son.’
“Alright, mother.” He sighed gloomily. “I’ll talk to you later. I love you.”
‘Love you too, my baby.’ She kissed the phone. ‘And don’t forget we’re meeting for lunch today. I’ll be waiting for you as usual.’
“Sure, ma!”
He cut the call and took a deep breath before something caught his eye. He wore an amazing smile and rushed there like he had just hit a jackpot.
“Hi!” He waved happily at the girl that was busy browsing through clothes. “How are you, Amber?”
Amber slowly turned and found Jim with a smile. She smiled back.
“Hey… Jim, right?”
“Yeah. Nice to meet you again.” He chuckled nervously. “It seems like fate keeps bringing us closer. I never thought I’d bump into you so early after our first meeting. What are you doing here?”
Amber chuckled, giving some clothes to the lady that was assisting her.
“Like you, I am here to just get a little something for myself.”
“Is that so?” He was nervous as hell. He looked around to see if he could see David. “Are you alone?”
“Yes, and I am guessing you’re looking for my brother?”
Jim’s cheeks turned pink and he felt a bit embarrassed. Was it that obvious, he thought as he chuckled nervous while scratching his hair.
“Look Jim, I want you to be honest with me.” She said with her arms crossing her chest. “Do you like my brother or maybe you want something from him? I saw the way you were looking at him at the restaurant. We’re both teenagers and I have crushed on someone before.”
Jim cleared his throat. “I wouldn’t want to lie, Amber. I am very interested in your brother. I am not the type of guy that loves to hide his feelings. I saw your brother and I liked him from the first timer I set my eyes on him. This might be strange but I think I am in love with him.”
"Many people say that about my brother." Amber shrugged. "You're not the first one to say that. What makes you so different from them. Maybe you are just after something else."
Jim chuckled. "They say that when you meet the person destined to be your lover, you'll know. Let's just say, it's instinct. Something is drawing me closer to your brother and this has never happened. I'm not after money because my family is one of the richest families in this country. I don't mean to brag but I'm telling the truth."
Amber laughed softly. "I'll be honest with you, Jim, I think you're a nice guy and I liked you from the time I saw you. But what makes you so sure that my brother will even like you or accept you to be in his life?"
"All I know is that I need to try." He moved closer and held Amber's hands. "If you met the person, you think is destined to be yours, wouldn't you do anything to try and get closer to him? Wouldn't you go out of your way to bring him closer and make sure he sees you?"
Amber was just staring at the boy without uttering a word.
"I like David and I don't mean to rush into anything with him. I'll understand but I'll not give up either."
Amber sighed. "I love your confidence, but it isn't up to me. It's up to David. I'll help you, only because I like you and I think you and my brother will make such a cute couple."
Jim brushed, combing his hair with his fingers. His heart began racing because he hadn't expected that to happen. He had been thinking Amber was gonna be rude to him and never agree to help him but he had been wrong all along.
"You're so sweet." He said sheepishly.
"It's okay. I am hosting a party tomorrow to welcome my brother back into the country." She said as she got out a card and handed it to him. "I'm inviting you there. This will give you an opportunity to meet my brother and talk to him."
Jim literally jumped as he looked at the card, like his life depended on it. "David Paola" his heart hammered in his chest as he read that name. Shit, he felt shivers going down his spine.
"I don't know how you're gonna talk to him or what you are gonna say, but I'm wishing you luck."
Jim raised his head and gave Amber a quick hug. "Thank you so much, Amber. This is the best thing anybody has ever done for me. This means a lot."
"Just a sister wanting the best for her brother. Let's just say, I'm doing this for selfish reasons."
"Oh!" He moaned, pressing his hand on his chest. "My savior. Does this mean we can be friends too, since there's a high chance that we might be seeing each other a lot."
"Sure!"
"Yes!" Jim acted like he had won a jackpot.
He was happy everything was going in place. He couldn't stop smiling and anticipating about meeting and talking to the hunk.
"Since we're now friends, how about we shop together while I get to know you."
"Sure!" Amber smiled as she started walking slowly with him. "Just don't get bored because I can be a little talkative sometimes."
"I don’t think anyone is as talkative as me." Jim replied.
It was a lovely day for Jim that day. They talked and talked about almost everything as they did their shopping. They went to get ice cream together and found that they had a lot in common. Every once in a while, Jim asked questions about David and Amber answered some but told him he was gonna find out on his own from David soon.
For instance, he found out that David loved going out for jogging in the morning. He loved vanilla and chocolate milkshake that he always had it every day. He was a down to earth guy that loved perfection and adventures. He was an interesting guy and... most of all, he loved his family a lot. Jim figured if he got closer to Amber, it was gonna make it easier for David to love him back. The two had a wonderful bond that they were literally each other's shadows. That was what he was gonna do. He was almost closer to getting David and he couldn't wait to have his hands all over the hunk. Just thinking about it made his body feel hot.

"Thank you so much." Ben smiled at the waiter that had just saved him some hot chocolate and a piece of cake.
He was having his lunch after spending almost the whole morning in a lecture. He was tired and hungry. But when he took a bite of that yummy vanilla cake and took his chocolate, they mixed in his mouth and he couldn't help but moan.
"Ben!"
He heard someone screaming his name. He took a glance near the entrance and found his brother running towards him like a child.
"Oh my God, Ben, I'm so glad I found you here." He was trying to catch his air. "Shit, let me take a breath."
"What's with you?" Ben frowned. "Did you win some competition or maybe a lottery?"
"Lottery?" Jim laughed, taking a seat. "I can buy the whole company that do those things. This is better than that. Guess whom I bumped into today?"
"Queen Victoria?" Ben said jockingly right before he burst into laughter.
"Very funny, but even better. I bumped into Amber while I was shopping today."
"Amber?" Ben was confused and the look on his face wasn't helping matters. "Who's Amber?"
"My sweetheart's sister from yesterday. My soulmate."
"Oh, is that why you're acting like that?"
"Because I am one step getting closer to the love of my life. She's hosting a party tomorrow and guess who's going?"
"You?"
"Us." Jim enthused, gripping Ben's hand. "We're both going. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I cannot miss it for anything in the world."
"Me?" Ben gasped, pointing at himself. "Why me? Last time I checked, you're the one who's interested in this guy. So why the hell am I being dragged into this?"
"Because you're my brother and you love me." He raised an eyebrow at Ben who rolled his eyes. "And also, because we're literally like twins so wherever I go, you go."
"I didn't sign up for that. And you know very well I don’t like parties. Especially this. There's going to be a bunch of strangers."
"So?" He shrugged. "Don't forget that we're the sons of Jerome Henandez. That alone should be able to get us an audience with even the freaking queen of England. We'll probably be among the richest kids there."
"That doesn't matter. I don't do well with strangers." He complained. "You're the one with a mission and I can't be walking right behind you. Besides, I don't have anything to wear."
Jim’s eyes widened in awe. "You know you're lying, Ben. But I figured you'd say that. That's why I got you something to wear for tomorrow. So, you've got no reason to refuse."
"You did what?" Ben's voice was so high he didn't realize some people were staring at their table. He glanced at them and whispered a sorry. "Why would you do that?"
"Because I ain't going anywhere without you. Unless you want me to get mad at you."
"Good! Talk to you whenever your anger melts because there's no way I'm stepping my foot at that party."
He started having his lunch.
"Come on, Ben." Jim said in a sad tone with puppy eyes. "You can't do that to me. You know how important this meeting is to me. You've always said that you've got my back anytime. Besides, I want you to be part of every important event that is happening in my life. That's how important you are to me."
He gripped his arm again and moved closer to him. Then he lay his head on his shoulder and continued pleading.
"Come on, Ben. You know if you're not coming the I am not going anywhere. I'll stay with you. But whatever you do, just know that this is my one opportunity to be truly happy with a man."
Ben groaned angrily, pushing his brother away from him.
"I am gonna regret this, ain't I?"
"Yes!" Jim rose from the chair and jumped. "I knew you were gonna give in. And no, you won't regret this. This might be your chance to meet some new people. David doesn't have a brother but I'm sure he's got some friends as hot as him, one of them might just sweet you off your feet. Wedding bells could be ringing in a few years. Maybe even a joint wedding."
"I said I'm coming with you, not looking for a husband." He said harshly. "Don't make me regret this, Jim."
"You won't." He leaned and kissed his cheek.
"Now can I have my lunch in peace?" He asked with raised shoulders.
"Go ahead." Jim chuckled. "I'll wait for you to finish so that we can head home."
Ben continued with his lunch and Jim continued with his day dream. He knew he needed to impress the handsome hunk and he was hoping everything was gonna go according to his plan. He was so happy.

The room was lit up by the best of decors, beautiful and expensive. Everyone was dressed to perfection in the most expensive clothes they could find. Friends, family and business partners were in attendance. There was slow music playing, beautiful party lighting and foods and drinks of all kinds. It wasn’t the party too fancy but it was just to have fun. Amber usually threw such parties whenever she was bored but this one was for her brother.
And here he was, the man of the moment stealing the night. He was dressed in a black designer’s suit that fit him like a second skin with a white shirt inside that was halfway done, revealing his sexy hairy chest. His hair was done to perfection and then combed backwards, showing his handsome face to the world.
Men and women in that party were all staring at him, flirting with him because he looked yummy. He was having a laugh with a bunch of men and women who were welcoming him back to the country. It was fun.
“Hey, hi guys.” Amber greeted the bunch. “May I just borrow the man of the moment for a while? I promise it won’t be long.”
She coiled her arms with him lovingly as they both walked away.
“My don’t you look beautiful tonight?” David whistled as he spun her slowly. “Who’d have known you’d ever look this beautiful?”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.” She laughed.
She looked gorgeous in a golden dress that reached her knees, stuck to her body and showing off her curves to the world. Her hair was curled and then tied in a bun and her makeup was on point. She looked like a princess, especially in those silver heels she wore.
“Hope you’re enjoying the party?” Amber asked. “It’s all for you.”
“Your parties are always fun. I am a having a good time.”
“See anything you like here?”
“More like see anything that doesn’t like me.” He joked. “I have even lost count of the number of people that have flirted with me in here. But that’s what makes it fun. What’s that word? The more the merrier, right?”
“Got words right out of my mouth.”
They saw a handsome man waving at them. He was wearing a grey designer’s suit with red shirt inside. His name was Isaac and he was their friend. They had all grown up together. He was David’s age and the two were inseparable.
*
The Henandez brothers entered the party room looking two angels had just fallen from heaven. Jim looked breathtakingly beautiful in a blood red designer’s suit with a white shirt inside. The suit looked amazing on him with red shoes. His hair shoulder length hair was gelled to perfect, revealing his beautiful hairless. When he entered, almost everyone looked in his direction.
Ben on the other hand looked nervous as hell. He wore a pink shirt that was tucked in a black skinny jean, showing off his body with black sneakers on his feet. His hair as was made into a ponytail but he was looking amazing. Anyone that looked in their direction couldn’t help but appreciate them.
Ben felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey! Come on, don’t show that you’re nervous.” Jim reassured. “I am with you here so just forget about all your fears. Your loving brother is here and I will make sure that you enjoy the party.”
Ben nodded, slightly smiling.
“Let’s go find my prince charming.” He held out his hand.
Ben held Jim’s hand tightly as the two of them went inside to have fun. Ben wanted to support his brother but he was just nervous that he felt out of place. He didn’t know what was gonna happen, especially since some people mocked him as a mistress’ son.
*
“Cheers!” Amber screamed at the top of her voice.
The three of them toast their glasses and enjoyed their wine. They were having so much fun and their evening had just started. David just wanted to have a wonderful time, maybe go back home with some hot guy.
“So how are you enjoying your work, bud?” Isaac asked.
“Haven’t really started.” He sighed. “I am taking my time, but mom told me to study some files so that I know how everything is moving. And speaking of mom…” He looked at her sister. “…wasn’t she supposed to return today?”
“Oh, she called and said she still have something to do. She’ll be spending a few more days.” She hit her brother’s chest hard. “But let’s not talk about that. You’re ruining the party mood. Today let’s just have fun, drink, dance and just live the night.”
The three of them burst into laughter. Amber was truly the life of the party. She always brought out her A game. They were still talking when all of a sudden…
“Excuse me!”
David heard a sweet voice behind him before someone tapped his back. He slowly turned only to get caught looking in someone’s eyes, someone very beautiful. The boy stood in front of him, staring straight into his eyes. There was something about him, something that David couldn’t put his finger on. But all he knew was that he looked very beautiful. He remembered seeing that face somewhere but couldn’t quite remember where.
“Hi!” David’s voice was barely above a whisper.
Jim felt his heart jump in his chest and he blushed, slightly dropping his eyes to the floor. The way David had looked at him as if staring into his very soul. His cheeks pinkened and he bit his lip, suppressing a moan.
“Hey!” Amber broke the silence between the two of them.
She rushed to Jim and hugged him tightly. “You are finally here? Err…. David, you do remember Jim, right?” She asked the man that still stared at Jim. “We met in the restaurant 3 days ago.”
“Oh!” He gasped. “I couldn’t recognize you. You look so beautiful.”
He took Jim’s hand and bowed slowly, kissing it. Jim felt his heart begin to race as his hand caught fire, a fire of passion. He visibly trembled and didn’t even realize it.
“Wow, Jim, you look amazing. Even my brother is caught in your fire.” Amber teased, making him blush some more. “You should have called that you arrived. I would have given you a very beautiful welcome.”
“Oh well, actually, I came here with my…”
But when he turned, there was no one behind him. He got surprised and began scanning throughout the room but there was no sign of Ben anywhere. He could have sworn Ben had been with him the whole time.
“Jim?” Amber called him. “You were saying?”
“Never mind.” He smiled. “I am just glad I am here. This is a very nice party. And David, welcome back and nice to meet you again.”
David cleared his throat. “Thank you so much.”
Isaac and Amber could feel the connection between the two men. They came up with an excuse and left the two of them there.
“I… I…” David stuttered. “You look very beautiful, Jim. I mean, you’re beautiful.”
“Thank you so much. I must say the same about you.”
And there was silence. The two men were staring at each other once again. Jim wanted to break the silence but he found that he had no words too. At that moment, he knew that that was the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for coming to my brother’s welcome party.”
They were interrupted by Amber’s cheerful voice and the audience clapping.
“It’s always nice to mingle with such good people.” She hollered, getting claps from everyone. “But we haven’t seen our man of the night dance tonight. That’s why, I would like to invite my brother, David and the gorgeous boy with him to the party. After that, we’ll all join the dance floor.”
Immediately she was done ‘Beneath your beautiful’ by Labrinth and Emeli Sande began playing and the room went dim. The spotlight shone on them and everyone gave them space. Jim felt his heart pounding against his ribs as if trying to fulfill a thousand beats.
He exhaled, releasing some of the tension that had built up in his shoulders.
“Shall we?” He asked with a chuckle.
David smiled brightly. “It would be an honor to dance with you.”
David took Jim’s hand sweetly and guided him across the dance floor as if they were in a dream. He had his eyes on Jim the whole time, yet knew where exactly to take him. Jim thought like he was floating. Everything had started falling into place and yet he had been there for only a few minutes.
The applause of the audience died down as the two of them took their places. David placed his hand on Jim’s back, Jim’s hand on his shoulder and their free hands finally met. They began dancing slowly to the music, their feet in perfect sync to the beating of Jim’s heart.
“You’re an amazing dancer.” Jim finally uttered a word as the man spun him slowly and brought him back closer. “Even better than I had imagined.”
David chuckled nervously. “Weird! You were imagining us dancing? When was that?”
“I have been imaging a lot of things since the time I saw you, Mr. Paola.” He finally confessed. “have you just met someone and thought that they’re the most beautiful person you’ve ever seen. That was why I came to the table that day. I wanted to talk to you but you seemed to be in a hurry.”
“Oh…” David said with a smile. “Why would a gorgeous boy like you be looking for someone like me?”
“My heart.” Jim said nervously. “It tells me a lot of things, things that I can’t even control. So I choose to listen to it all the time.”
“Really? Do you mind sharing?”
“I will… soon…” He chuckled as he wrapped his arms tightly around David’s neck. “…but for now, I wanna enjoy this dance with you. It’s been a long time since I danced with someone so perfect.”
“Lucky me! But as you wish, mi hermosa.”
David turned elegantly, his body in tune with the slow music. Yet, there was a sort of harshness to him, like he was someone who shouldn’t be underestimated. Jim didn’t quite care at the moment. Was it because he was falling in love with someone that he barely knew? The warmth between them grew so powerful by the second, well to Jim it did.
Jim’s heart beat was growing steadily along with it. Their dance was perfect; everything from their breathing to their feet movements stayed in sync. But just as soon as it had started, it ended and both of them were breathless.
Everyone cheered and whistled as soon as they finished dancing. It had been beautiful and had been good while it lasted, Jim couldn’t help but think. If only he could dance again with the hunk for the rest of the night but he needed to talk to him.
“I… I…”
“Would you like another dance?” David asked softly.
“No, actually, I would love an opportunity to talk to you if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all.” David said with a smile. “But it would be disrespectful if I didn’t get you something to drink. Do you mind waiting here for just a second? I need to get us some drinks.”
Jim shook his head and when the hunk kissed his hand and left, he felt himself get hot. How he wished Ben had been there with him. He would have hugged him tightly. He looked at the hand that the hunk had kissed and brought it to his face. At that pace, he knew he was gonna be tasting the hunk’s lips that night and maybe spend the night with him.
*
Ben was looking around, scanning the room to see if he could spot his brother but he was nowhere to be seen. He couldn’t believe Jim had left him knowing very well that he had been nervous in the first place. There had been a number of men that had hit on him and they had been weird. To avoid them, he had spent a lot of time in the bathroom and now he was out, hoping to see his brother.
Suddenly, Ben bumped into someone hard.
“Shit!” He heard someone curse.
Ben quickly fixed his gaze in front and found a very beautiful young lady with a golden dress, a distance from him. She was looking pissed and he knew he had messed up.
“Hey, watch where you’re going.” Amber said harshly, almost hissing. “You nearly had me on the floor. Don’t you know how to be gentle?”
“I am sorry.” He raised his hands as if he was surrendering. “I wasn’t paying attention. It’s my fault. I am truly sorry.”
With those words, he slowly turned to leave but…
“Wait!” He heard a voice behind him.
He stood still without turning and heard footsteps near him. In a few seconds, the beautiful lady was staring into his face with a frown on her face. Ben got nervous. He knew that he hadn’t done what he did on purpose but the lady didn’t wanna let go.
“I am sorry, ma’am.”
“I don’t remember seeing your face before and I know almost everyone in this room.” She crossed her arms on her chest. “Who are you and how did you get in here without an invitation?”
Ben’s stomach seemed to rise to his throat. “My name is Ben Henandez and I am here with my brother. I have been looking for him everywhere and I still can’t find him.”
Amber’s face brightened. “Of course,” She hit her heard. “Jim’s brother, right?” Ben nodded. “I remember him trying to tell us that he came here with someone. My name is Amber.” She extended her hand. “I am sorry if I scared you earlier. You did quite bump into me a little too hard.”
“I am sorry.”
“Just joking.” She laughed.
“Pardon my manners.” Ben shook her hand powerfully with a smile. “Nice to meet you, Amber. I am hoping you’re not hurt or anything?”
“I am fine. And don’t worry about your brother. He was dancing with my brother earlier. I am sure they’re somewhere talking.” She got nearer and whispered. “Wouldn’t wanna disturb them. You know what they say about new found lovers.”
“Yeah!” Ben chuckled nervously, still looking around.
“But while my brother is busy with your brother, maybe I can keep you company.” She proposed. “That’s if you don’t mind?”
“You seem like a pretty cool girl and you’re beautiful. So why not.”
Amber touched her chest, feeling special. “You’re just as sweet as your brother. And he never even mentioned that he’s got such a cute brother.”
“Ha ha ha… that sly dog.” He said as the two of them burst into laughter. “And I am humbled by your words. This is a very beautiful party and I am having a good time.” He lied.
“That’s me.” She opened her arms widely. “They call me the party planner. So if you need anything party related, I am your girl.”
The two had a good time talking and getting to know each other. Before he even knew, his nerves were all calm. He was opening up to Amber.
Meanwhile, David was on his way back to where he had left Jim. He was holding two glasses of wine for himself and the gorgeous man. He had a smile on his face. As he was going back, he spotted Amber closer to him and she seemed to be in a very cheerful conversation from the expression of her hands.
She was talking to someone whom he couldn’t see because Amber had her back towards him, blocking the person. But he figured it was Isaac and that was also the time he realized he had something that he needed to ask Amber quickly.
He changed his direction and began heading to her with a smile on his face. He was almost near when he felt someone tap his shoulder. He quickly turned and found Jim smiling brightly at him. He took one glass from him and winked.
“I believe this is mine, my good sir?”
“Of course.” He chuckled nervously.
“And where were you going? Were you trying to run away from me?” He asked jokingly, taking a sip of his wine.
“Why would I do that?” He moaned, biting his lip. “After all, your presence has made my party extra special. I wanted to have a quick chat with Amber.”
He looked in the direction where he had seen her and found she wasn’t there. Strange, he thought as he shook his head. He looked at Jim and smiled at him.
“Never mind. What did you wanna tell me?”
Jim coiled his arm with David’s and they went to a place that wasn’t filled with lots of people near a window.
“Look, David, I am a very straight forward person and I don’t wanna waste any time.” Jim started. He was very nervous. “I like you very much. Ever since the first day I saw you, my heart knew that you had to be in my life. I wanna get close to you and I am sorry to say this but not as a friend.”
“Really?” David said in a triumphant voice. His heart lifted and his face brightened up. “Wow, I feel so hot right now just listening to you. But you barely know me and you don’t know the type of person I am. What makes you think that I am the guy for you?”
“I have feelings for you, David.” He took his hand and rubbed on them sweetly. “And I won’t give up. I don’t know… I have never felt this way about anyone before, someone that I barely know. But it happened, right when I set my eyes on you in the restaurant. And this isn’t because you’re rich, I promise. Because my father is one of the richest men in the country. But this is genuine.
I know I may seem desperate but that’s what you’re doing to me, David. I guess in just a few words, I like you very much and I would love for you to be my boyfriend.”
David’s heart was racing. He had a smile on his face as he stared at the boy, his hand slowly rising to his face. He pressed it on Jim’s cheek and caressed it. The boy blushed and bit his lip, but that was what made him look amazing to David.
“Thank you so much for your kind words, mi hermosa.” He said in between chuckles. “You’re a very beautiful boy and any guy would be happy to have you. Guess, I am lucky, getting a love proposal from such beauty.”
Jim felt like he was on fire. His breaths were harsh.
“Jim, I want to say that even I would love to…”
But that was it. David didn’t finish his sentence because something happened. He didn’t know how it happened or how he saw him. But there was the boy he had met the other day at the restaurant, a distance from him, past Jim.
At first glance, he had an abrupt change of mind. The smile on his face completely faded as he stared at the boy that seemed to be busy moving towards the exit. He looked so beautiful… so calm and so amazing with his hair tied in a ponytail just like he had seen it the first time. He felt his heart pound in his ears and he gulped, feeling weak in the knees.
“David!” Jim called. “You were saying?
But David didn’t respond. He gave his glass of wine to Jim unconsciously and as if his feet were on fire, he began rushing towards the boy that had already exited the room. It was as if the hounds of hell were after him. In no time at all, he was exiting the room.
“David?” Jim hollered but the man was deaf to his voice.
David ran after the boy but as he was getting out, he found the elevator closing and he rushed in hopes of getting in before the elevator could close but it was too late.
“Hey!” He called, hitting the elevator angrily.
He pressed the buttons for them to open but it seemed the elevator had already started going down. He ran as fast as his feet could carry him and used the staircase, not minding that he was on the fifth floor. By the time he was reaching the ground floor, he was hoping the elevator hadn’t reached yet so he could talk to the boy.
To his disappointment, when the elevator opened, there was no one there.
“Shit!” He stamped his foot on the floor, feeling anger take ahold of him. “Not again.”
He looked around to see if he could spot him but got nervous when he saw him rushing out the exit. He felt a surge of adrenaline and then without a thought, he splinted toward the exit. He run like mad, following the mysterious guy.
“Mr….” He called. “Hey!”
He didn’t mind that there were a lot of people that began watching him. His goal was to find the boy and talk to him. He didn’t wanna lose him this time. His steps were pounding in time with his heartbeat.
He got out and found the boy entering a taxi a distance from him. It immediately started going.
David rushed to his car that was nearby and followed after the taxi. He could see it, right in front of him. The wind pushed on his car as he added to his speed, honking at the taxi. But it wasn’t stopping. He was determined and he wasn’t gonna stop until he talked to him. With his hands firmly on the wheel and his foot on the accelerator, he drove like he was crazy, passed the taxi and when he was a distance, he blocked the way and stopped. The taxi stopped near him and the driver got out angrily.
“Sir, are you insane?” He shouted.
“Sorry, buddy.” He said as he pushed past him. “But I need to do this.”
He went to the taxi, opened it widely with a smile on his face but to his disappointment, there was an elderly woman that looked scared. Shit! Once again, he had lost the boy. He had been so sure that he had found him this time. How come, he thought?
“May… may I help you, sir?” The woman stuttered.
“Sorry! I thought you were someone else.” He said as he closed the door.
He stood there with his hands on his hips, his mind filled with thoughts. He could have bet his life that was the same car that he had seen the boy leave with. How did he miss it? Was his mind playing tricks on him and that boy hadn’t been at the party?
He stood there for some minutes before he entered his car and drove off.
***
David was in his house, seated in the living room with a glass of whisky in his hand. The same scene kept playing in his mind, the boy at the party. How come he hadn’t seen him and only saw him that late. His mind was definitely playing tricks on him.
He heard footsteps rushing towards him right before he heard an angry voice.
“Are you serious right now?” Amber sounded mad. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you and you’re here drinking liquor? You haven’t been answering your calls and you left without saying a word to anyone?”
“I think I left it in my car.” He said simply before he emptied the whole glass in his mouth. “And sorry for leaving without saying anything. It wasn’t planned.”
“Dude! It was your party.” Isaac sat next to him. “You left it in chaos. Jim said you left like something was chasing you. What happened? Are you okay?”
“I saw him at the party.” He sighed in frustration. “And when I realized it, he was gone. I was occupied that I missed my opportunity again.”
Amber and Isaac looked at each other with confused faces.
“You saw who? What are you talking about?”
“The boy.” He said angrily. “The same boy I told you I saw at the restaurant. I saw him at the party.”
“That’s not possible.” Amber shook her head. “There’s no way because everyone at the party were our friends. Maybe you’re coming down with a fever.” She pressed her hand on his forehead. “Are you okay?”
“I am fine.” He said angrily, rising from the couch. “On second thought, I am not fine. I almost had him… almost.” He groaned in frustration. “But it seems like fate is trying to play tricks. Nothing comes easy, right?”
Amber grabbed her brother’s shoulder and looked into his eyes.
“David, please, listen to me. There was no one like that at the party. I am not even sure this boy exists.” She shrugged. “But what I know is that Jim exists and he came all the way to talk to you. He likes you and I am sure you guys were vibing. On the dance floor… the way you danced… the way you were staring at each other. I thought you guys had a connection. He was hurt and worried with the way you left. Nobody deserves to be treated like that, especially someone who is interested in you. Call him and apologize, please.”
“Amber, you know me very well, maybe better than I even know myself.” He sighed. “I am a sucker for beauties. And yes, Jim is very beautiful and I might have felt something but not anymore. Now that I saw that boy again, I am sure that we’re destined to meet. I have never felt this way for someone before. I just wanna hug him and hold him for all eternity. Crazy…” He laughed at the top of his voice. “…I don’t even know this boy. But I feel connected to him.”
“You’re scaring me, David.” Isaac finally spoke. “I have never heard you speak about anyone like this before. I agree with Amber. I think Jim is perfect for you. Both of you are handsome, sexy and you look good together. Give a chance to the one who is around than chasing after whom you don’t know.”
David laughed. “You guys won’t understand. But now that I have seen that boy, I won’t rest until I talk to him.”
Without any word, he rushed upstairs, leaving the two confused.

Jim stormed in the apartment, banging the door behind him. He was breathing like a warrior who had lost a battle. His nostrils were flaring, fists clenched at his sides. He began moving about the living room, hitting his head as he did.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
When Ben came into a living room, he could tell Jim was angry by the way his hands were shaking. Ben was in his PJs with a cup of ice cream in his hands.
“Jim.”
“Fuck!” He screamed at the top of his voice.
“Hey calm down.” Ben went in front of him and stopped him. “With the way you’re overheating, you might just burn our apartment down and we’ll have no choice but to go back home.”
“That isn’t funny.” Jimmy said with a scorned face. “And where the hell were you? You left me all alone at the party when I told you to wait. What part of that didn’t you understand?”
“Oh!” Ben gasped, his hands finding his chest. “I know all this anger in you isn’t for me. So shoot. What happened.”
Jim had tears in his eyes. He took a deep breath and tried to calm his nerves.
“Everything was going so well, Ben. I talked to David and he seemed happy. We were so happy, we danced and the guy was hooked. The next thing…” he frowned. “…he just left out of the blue and never came back. He didn’t say a word and he never came back. I have never felt so humiliated in my whole life.”
“That’s strange.” Ben frowned. “But if everything was going so well as you said, then why did he leave. Maybe… work.” He shrugged.
“I don’t care.” He screamed. But Ben held him tightly and pulled him into a hug, rubbing his back.
“It’s okay. I understand. Don’t think too much about it. I am sure there’s an explanation for all this.” He assured. “If you say that everything was going well then it must be a sign that you guys are meant to be.”
“I don’t care about any sign. I shall have that man at any cost.” He glowered. “I swear…”
