Something in the Way - 1. Something in the Way

Dedicated to someone
But for now, who I can’t say
It can happen so often
That there’s something in the way

I would do much more for you
I’d do things every day
It’s not like I don’t want to
But there’s something in the way

Maybe I will see you soon
Tomorrow is a new day
Wait is all that we can do
‘Coz there’s something in the way

Every day, wait some more
Hope it will happen someday
As time goes by, I’m not sure
Damn, there’s something in the way

But the question remains, is this something real, or a figment if my twisted imagination?

A mystifying poem @Lee Wilson, and one that mirrors my own conundrum (and one many of us face throughout our lives),  and often we hear this suggestion from well intentioned others (from William Shakespeare's Hamlet):

"To thy own self be true"

But what does that mean?

Some say it means that one should be true to their principles and who they are. That they should not strive to please other people by changing what they believe in or acting in any way that is outside what they really want to do.

Is it really that simple, or are "we" just overthinking it?

Sometime our principles contribute to that something. Like I wouldn't kill someone to get around that obstacle.
