Enthralled - 22. Chapter 22
22
The autumn wind sweeping through the Oak Creek reserve carried the crisp, sharp scent of pine needles, damp earth, and the faint, lingering smell of woodsmoke from a meticulously constructed fire pit. In the center of the designated clearing, Boy Scout Troop 442 stood in a perfect, terrifyingly silent semi-circle. Twelve twelve-year-old werewolf pups, clad in immaculate, pressed khaki uniforms, stood at absolute attention. Their posture was rigid. Their golden eyes were fixed forward. They looked less like a youth organization and more like a miniature, highly disciplined paramilitary strike force awaiting deployment orders.
Standing before them was their Scoutmaster.
Andy Tyrell—formerly Jędrzej, formerly the Scourge of the Carpathians, currently a three-hundred-year-old aristocratic vampire trapped in suburban purgatory—wore the mandated, humiliating khaki uniform of a troop leader. His wide-brimmed campaign hat was pulled low over his pale eyes, casting a shadow over his sharp, gothic features. He held a clipboard in one hand and a pen in the other, projecting an aura of ancient, absolute authority that usually caused mortal men to drop to their knees.
Today, he was using it to grade arts and crafts.
"Scout Simon," Andy intoned, his baritone voice echoing off the surrounding pines with the gravity of a battlefield promotion. "Step forward."
From the center of the formation, Simon Sanchez stepped forward with crisp, military precision. He did not break eye contact. He marched exactly three paces, halted, and snapped a sharp salute. Tucked tightly under his left arm was an object of monumental, terrifying significance.
"Scoutmaster Andy, sir," Simon said, his voice entirely monotone. "I present to you the final requirement for the Advanced Arts and Crafts Merit Badge. As well as the foundational tactical document for this troop’s ongoing survival in a compromised supernatural theater."
Simon extended his arms, offering the object to the ancient vampire.
Andy slowly lowered his clipboard. He reached out with pale, elegant fingers that had once wielded broadswords and signed archaic blood treaties, and he gently took the object from the twelve-year-old boy.
It was a three-ring binder. Or, at least, it had once been a three-ring binder.
Now, it was a structural nightmare of cardboard, heavy-duty duct tape, and sheer, uncompromising artistic vision. The cover had been aggressively lacquered in an astonishing amount of Modge-Podge. Embedded within the thick, slightly sticky layer of industrial-strength craft glue was a chaotic mosaic of dry macaroni noodles, handfuls of dirt, and a collection of brittle, perfectly preserved maple and oak leaves. It smelled overwhelmingly of Elmer’s glue, decaying foliage, and werewolf spit. It was heavy, rigid, and actively flaking small pieces of dried pasta onto the forest floor.
Scrawled across the sticky, leaf-crusted cover in bold, black Sharpie marker was the title:
A SCOUT'S GUIDE TO VAMPIRE HUNTING
Authorized by Troop 442
Andy stared down at the sticky, macaroni-encrusted manual. He could feel the adhesive slightly bonding to the leather of his tactical gloves. He looked at the crude, hand-drawn skull-and-crossbones in the corner, which had been adorned with what looked like actual glitter.
He did not laugh. He did not patronize the boy. He understood the profound, deadly seriousness of twelve-year-old werewolves. To Esca Tyrell, this would be a piece of repulsive, unhygienic garbage. To Andy, it was a testament to the pack’s unyielding resilience.
Andy’s expression remained a mask of solemn, grave reverence, as if he had just been handed the Magna Carta. He inspected the spine, noted the structural integrity of the glued leaves, and gave a single, firm nod.
"The adhesive application is thorough, Simon," Andy said quietly, his voice thick with genuine respect. "The tactical camouflage provided by the local foliage is strategically sound. And the structural binding appears capable of withstanding heavy combat. I accept this manual into the troop’s official archives."
He took his pen and formally, cleanly signed his name on Simon’s merit badge completion sheet.
Simon did not smile—the Sanchez triplets rarely did—but his golden eyes flared with a deep, profound pride. "Thank you, Scoutmaster. We will not let the troop down."
"I know you won't," Andy replied smoothly. "Return to formation."
Simon executed a perfect about-face and marched back to his brothers, Alvin and Theodore, who both gave him synchronized, approving nods.
Andy tucked the sticky, macaroni-covered binder securely under his arm, allowing himself a brief, private moment of satisfaction. It was a good day. The troop was disciplined, the morale was high, and Esca’s spies in the tree line were currently filming him validating macaroni art.
And then, his ancient, hyper-tuned senses caught the sound of someone whistling a jaunty, off-key pop song, accompanied by the heavy, uncoordinated crunching of boots on gravel.
Andy’s blood ran cold. He turned his head slowly.
Emerging from the trail leading back to the parking lot was Lucas Cooper. The pack mascot was wearing his chaotic, heavily patched "Assistant Scoutmaster" uniform, complete with the oversized campaign hat that kept slipping over his eyes.
But it was what Lucas was wearing across his chest that made the three-hundred-year-old vampire’s dead heart stall in absolute, gothic horror.
Draped proudly over Lucas’s shoulder and resting across his torso was a brand new, meticulously cross-stitched merit badge sash.
Andy possessed a photographic memory, honed over centuries of survival. He recognized standard scouting badges. He knew what the knot-tying, fire-building, and first-aid patches looked like. The brightly colored, painstakingly embroidered circles on Lucas’s sash were none of those things.
Lucas had spent hours—perhaps days—creating a series of highly unauthorized, profoundly inappropriate custom commendations.
Andy’s eyes darted to the top badge. It featured a highly detailed, anatomically baffling cross-stitch in alarming shades of pink and beige thread. Lucas proudly called it his "Advanced First Aid" badge. Andy took one look at the bizarre angle of the stitching and the friction it implied, realized exactly what biological act the teenager had depicted in yarn, and felt a cold sweat break out on the back of his neck.
Before Lucas could even step fully into the clearing, Andy lunged.
Moving with a blinding, preternatural speed that reduced him to a blur of motion, Andy crossed the twenty yards of open space in a fraction of a second. He materialized directly in front of the teenager, ripping his own khaki campaign hat off his head and slamming it directly over the top badge on Lucas’s sash.
"Hey!" Lucas yelped, stumbling backward. "Watch the uniform, man! I spent six hours on that shading!"
"Lucas!" Andy hissed, his voice dropping into a panicked, frantic whisper, his eyes wide as he physically shielded the sash from the view of the twelve impressionable pups and one baby gargoyle behind him. "What in the name of God is that?"
"It’s my lived experience, Andy," Lucas declared loudly, trying to swat the hat away. "I’m charting my scouting journey!"
"That is not a scouting journey!" Andy practically shrieked, his composure completely shattering. His eyes flicked down to the next patch on the sash.
It was supposed to be the "Knot-Tying" commendation. Instead of a standard square knot or a clove hitch, Lucas had meticulously embroidered a complex, multi-point rope restraint system. Andy’s ancient brain instantly recognized the specific configuration; he had seen it in an underground, highly exclusive club in Victorian London in 1892.
Without a word, Andy’s hand shot out, unclipped the restraint badge with surgical precision, and threw it directly into the roaring campfire.
"My knots!" Lucas wailed, grabbing his chest as the fabric went up in a puff of acrid smoke.
Over by the fire pit, Declan Draven had just arrived, carrying a cooler of supplies. The prep-school tactician walked past, glancing casually at Lucas’s sash. He saw the "Foraging" patch—a beautifully rendered, incredibly suggestive eggplant and a peach resting side-by-side.
Declan stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at the patch, his brain taking a moment to process the modern vernacular imagery. When it clicked, the dignified heir to the Draven pack violently choked on his own saliva, dropping the cooler and fleeing into the woods to cough up a lung.
From the formation, Simon Sanchez raised his hand. "Scoutmaster Andy? Why is Assistant Scoutmaster Lucas’s foraging peach located next to that vegetable? Are they meant to be stewed together for optimal caloric intake?"
"Yes!" Andy shouted back, his voice cracking an octave higher than normal. "They are for a stew! A very terrible, inedible eggplant and peach stew!"
Andy turned back to Lucas, his eyes wild. He spotted the final badge at the bottom of the sash. It was an "Equestrian" honor. It featured a beautifully stitched leather saddle with a bright, aggressive red circle and a slash drawn through it.
"It’s my Barebacking badge!" Lucas announced proudly, puffing out his chest. "I earned it last weekend when Ronan—"
Andy didn't let him finish the sentence. The vampire tackled him, entirely abandoning his aristocratic dignity. He grabbed the fabric and ripped the entire sash directly over Lucas’s head, bunching the horrifying collection of degeneracy into a tight ball and shoving it deep into his own pocket.
"Censorship!" Lucas yelled, pointing an accusing finger at the sky. "You are stifling the arts, Andrew! You are silencing the youth!"
"I am preventing my own spontaneous combustion," Andy wheezed, rubbing his temples, feeling a migraine of catastrophic proportions settling in. He took a deep breath, straightened his uniform, and turned back to his strike force of pups, clutching the sticky, Modge-Podged binder to his chest like a shield.
"Right," Andy said, his voice returning to its normal, commanding baritone as he ignored Lucas’s continued protests. "Let us proceed with the day's tactical evaluations. Fall out and commence perimeter sweeps."
The twelve pups and one baby gargoyle in a papoose scattered with terrifying efficiency.
Andy walked over to the nearest picnic table, sat down heavily on the wooden bench, and set the Scout's Guide to Vampire Hunting down in front of him. A dry macaroni noodle detached from the cover and rolled sadly across the table.
With a long, exhausted sigh, Andy opened the manual.
A SCOUT'S GUIDE TO VAMPIRE HUNTING
Prepared by: The Sanchez Triplets (Alvin, Simon, Theodore)
Supervising Scoutmaster: Andy Tyrell (formerly Cooper)
Date: The Fall of the Old World (Also, Tuesday)
FOREWORD
The supernatural world is fraught with hazards, hostile entities, poor fashion choices, and entirely inadequate snacking protocols. We, the Sanchez Triplets, have compiled this foundational tactical document to ensure the continued survival of Troop 442. We are twelve. We are deadly. We have earned our whittling badges. May God have mercy on our enemies, because we will not.
SECTION 1: IDENTIFYING THREATS
1.1 Vampires
Vampires are apex predators. They are fast, strong, and possess excellent dental hygiene. They do not need to brush, but they do anyway, which is suspicious. They also have a tendency to brood dramatically in poorly lit areas.
Rule 1: Do not mistake brooding for weakness. It is a tactical distraction designed to lower your guard.
Rule 2: Scoutmaster Andy is a vampire. He is our Scoutmaster. He is not a threat to the troop. However, he is not a good role model for proper social behavior. Do not imitate his brooding. It will result in demerits.
Rule 3: Vampires are vulnerable to sunlight, silver stakes to the heart, and prolonged exposure to Lucas Cooper’s chaotic energy.
[The following section has been written in neon-pink gel pen, the handwriting chaotic and looping, breaking through the pristine block letters of the triplets.]
LUCAS’S OFFICIAL ADDENDUM: Vampires are also highly vulnerable to boys in grey sweatpants. Specifically, heather grey. It short-circuits their ancient brains. (See Field Note: Draven, Declan). Note to future scouts: Do not let Declan Draven pick his own outfits for covert operations. He dresses like a depressed youth pastor and it kills the vibe.
[A sterile footnote has been added below the pink ink in precise, black block letters.]
WARNING: This page has been compromised by the Pack Mascot. The Sanchez Triplets have confiscated his pink pen. Please disregard all references to 'grey sweatpants' as a tactical weapon. It is highly inaccurate and unsanitary.
1.2 Werewolves
Werewolves are pack animals. We are werewolves. We are loud, territorial, and obsessed with establishing dominance through unnecessary physical wrestling. We also shed excessively.
Rule 1: The Sanchez Triplets recommend keeping a heavy-duty lint roller in your tactical pack at all times. Black tactical gear requires maintenance.
Rule 2: The War Leader, Martin Sanchez, is our older brother. He is a massive, highly lethal force of nature and a reliable source of tactical knowledge. He also has very strong opinions about craft beer, despite being legally prohibited from purchasing it. Do not engage him in conversation about hops, IPAs, or fermentation unless you have at least thirty minutes to spare.
Rule 3: Werewolves are not vulnerable to silver. This is a Hollywood myth perpetuated by inadequate research. Do not attempt to use silver on a werewolf. It will only make them angry. And they will tell their Alpha’s. And Martin will be very disappointed in you. You do not want Martin to be disappointed in you.
1.3 Gargoyles
[The physical texture of this specific page changes abruptly. The edges are jagged, torn, and slightly fossilized. The paper smells faintly of wet cement and limestone. It is slightly chewed.]
Gargoyles are ancient protectors. They are wise, patient, and excellent at hiding in plain sight. Bartholomew is the pack's official observer. He is also the only entity capable of keeping Scoutmaster Andy from brooding too much. Gargoyles are made of stone. They do not eat, sleep, or move when being actively observed by mortals. This makes them excellent spies. Do not attempt to sneak up on a gargoyle. They will see you coming.
Field Note: Barty Jr.
Subject Status: Stone Toddler / Pack Ally.
Barty Jr. is a newly awakened gargoyle. He is small, dense, and makes noises resembling a cement mixer digesting gravel. The pack has accepted him into the ranks. He is an excellent listener, though his current vocabulary is strictly limited to the word 'Butterfly' and an inappropriate phrase taught to him by Lucas Cooper. The Sanchez triplets are currently working to rectify this breach of protocol.
WARNING: Do not attempt to engage Barty Jr. in a debate regarding his pet rock collection. It is a philosophical trap. Barty Jr. collects rocks. He has named them. He carries them in a canvas pouch. He firmly believes they are his brothers, or perhaps his distant cousins. As he is also made of rock, the Sanchez triplets cannot definitively prove him wrong on a biological level. This is deeply frustrating for our tactical assessments.
Update: Yesterday, he attempted to feed a mini-marshmallow to a piece of granite. The marshmallow fell into the fire and aggressively caught fire. Barty Jr. believed this was a successful tactical strike and applauded loudly. He will make a fine soldier.
1.4 Esca Tyrell (The Architect of Khaki)
Esca Tyrell is a two-thousand-year-old vampire. He is Scoutmaster Andy's sire.
He is the ultimate threat to the troop.
He is not a threat because of his fangs or his ancient blood magic. He is a threat because he is the primary reason Scoutmaster Andy has been wearing knee-length khaki shorts. This is an unacceptable violation of the aesthetic environment. Scouts do not wear khaki shorts. Scouts wear appropriate, weather-resistant outdoor tactical attire which happen to be khaki and shorts.
Esca Tyrell is powerful, manipulative, and resides in a very nice, minimalist glass house. Do not trust the nice house. It is a sterile trap designed to crush the soul. Scoutmaster Andy is currently working on a long-term plan to deal with Esca Tyrell. The Sanchez triplets have officially offered their assistance in this matter. We are very good at whittling.
SECTION 2: SURVIVAL TACTICS & TROOP PROTOCOLS
2.1 Dealing with Hunters
Hunters are humans who believe they are protecting the world from supernatural threats. They are often heavily armed, deeply paranoid, and profoundly misguided. They drive vans with excessive radio antennas.
Protocol: Do not engage hunters directly in combat. It is a waste of caloric energy. Let them tire themselves out by chasing shadows in the woods. If a hunter approaches you, act normal.
If you are a werewolf, do not howl. Barking is also frowned upon.
If you are a vampire, do not sparkle. Do not hiss.
If you are a gargoyle, remain entirely motionless.
This is basic survival mechanics.
2.2 Logistics and Provisions (By Quartermaster Gerald)
The following section has been contributed by Scout Gerald, Head of Inventory.
The caloric differential between the various supernatural entities in this pack is an absolute logistical nightmare. A growing werewolf pup requires approximately 4,000 calories a day to maintain combat readiness. The Alphas require double that. Scoutmaster Andy requires blood, which must be stored at a precise temperature.
The primary threat to our supply chain is not hunters or rival packs. The primary threat is Lucas Cooper.
Lucas Cooper consumes resources at an unsustainable rate. Last Tuesday, he infiltrated the secondary supply cache and consumed six pounds of high-protein venison jerky because he had "the munchies." He then attempted to replace the jerky with generic brand graham crackers. This is an act of treason.
Protocol: All premium meat reserves must now be stored in the high-canopy lockboxes. Lucas Cooper cannot climb trees efficiently. He lacks the upper body strength.
2.3 Perimeter Defense (By Scout Timmy)
The following section has been contributed by Scout Timmy, Head of Traps and Snares.
I have conducted a preliminary surveillance assessment of Esca Tyrell’s glass fortress. The compound utilizes a state-of-the-art, billion-dollar biometric security grid, motion-sensing lasers, and infrared cameras. It is designed to keep out elder vampires and corporate espionage teams.
It is entirely inadequate against a twelve-year-old with a spool of heavy-gauge wire and a Swiss Army knife.
The security system assumes a threat profile over five feet tall. It does not account for a coordinated, low-to-the-ground infiltration by pre-teen wolves crawling through the HVAC vents. I have calculated that I could bypass the external alarms using a piece of chewing gum and a reflective mirror in under four minutes. I am awaiting authorization from Scoutmaster Andy to execute Operation: Shattered Glass. He keeps telling me 'no'. I believe he is underestimating my chewing gum.
2.4 Communications and Threat Assessment (By Scout Oisín)
The following section has been contributed by Scout Oisín, Head of Communications.
Evaluating the emotional and tactical state of Scoutmaster Andy is vital for troop readiness. As vampires do not have a pulse, we cannot measure his resting heart rate. Therefore, we must rely on auditory cues. Specifically: The Sighs.
I have calibrated a decibel meter to categorize Scoutmaster Andy’s sighs to determine the current threat level of the environment.
The Lucas Sigh: (Approximately 40 Decibels). A short, sharp exhalation through the nose. Indicates exasperation, usually occurring when Lucas Cooper speaks. Threat Level: Low.
The Draven Sigh: (Approximately 60 Decibels). A long, sustained breath accompanied by rubbing of the temples. Indicates severe aesthetic distress, usually occurring when Declan Draven attempts to act like a 'Mac-Daddy'. Threat Level: Moderate.
The Tyrell Sigh: (Approximately 85 Decibels). A deep, rattling sound emerging from the chest cavity, accompanied by a drop in ambient temperature and glowing red eyes. Indicates that Esca Tyrell has done something horrific, like purchasing another pastel polo shirt. Threat Level: Critical. Evacuate the immediate area and arm yourselves with whittled stakes.
SECTION 3: FIELD NOTES
Field Note Incident: The First Moot
The Moot was a gathering of regional werewolf packs in the northern quadrant of the reserve. It was incredibly loud, disorganized, and smelled heavily of wet dog, stale beer, and machismo. The Sanchez triplets did not enjoy the sociopolitical posturing. We did, however, enjoy the competitive whittling contest, which we won decisively. The neighboring packs wept at the sharpness of our bevels.
Scoutmaster Andy was present at the Moot. He spent the entire evening standing in the shadows of an oak tree, brooding. This was expected behavior.
Field Note Incident: The Blood Bank Heist
Two weeks ago, the pack executed a highly tactical, covert infiltration of the municipal blood bank to secure necessary medical-grade rations for Scoutmaster Andy. It was successful.
The Sanchez triplets were not involved in this operation. We were told we were "too small" and "legally required to be in bed by nine PM."
We are still deeply bitter about this exclusion. We could have bypassed the thermal sensors much faster than Martin. We are holding a grudge. It has been noted in the ledger.
Field Note Incident: Observing the Alpha-Adjacent Tactician
A few days ago, at 1400 hours, we observed Declan Draven (Heir to the Pack, Alpha-Adjacent) attempt a romantic infiltration of Scoutmaster Andy’s locker area.
Declan Draven is usually a pristine, highly logical operative. During this incident, he was wearing baggy heather-grey sweatpants, a backward baseball cap, and a t-shirt featuring a cartoon dog. He approached the target, wiped his nose with his hand, and utilized the phrase "wanna boink".
The Sanchez triplets analyzed this interaction in real-time. It was the single most catastrophic failure of tactical seduction we have ever witnessed. Declan Draven’s posture indicated he was in severe physical agony.
Miraculously, Scoutmaster Andy agreed to a date. We can only conclude that vampires operate on a fundamentally broken psychological framework, wherein extreme, pathetic desperation triggers a rescue response. We have documented this anomaly for future study.
SECTION 4: CUSTOM MERIT BADGES
To adequately prepare Troop 442 for the realities of our specific supernatural ecosystem, the standard Boy Scout merit badges have been deemed insufficient. The Sanchez triplets have drafted the requirements for the following necessary commendations.
1. Tactical Incineration Badge
Requirement: The scout must successfully roast a standard marshmallow over an open flame to a perfect, even golden brown.
Complication: The scout must achieve this while Lucas Cooper is actively running around the campfire, knocking over lawn chairs, shouting about his YouTube channel, and attempting to accidentally set the surrounding forest on fire. If the marshmallow burns, or if the forest burns, the scout fails.
2. Gargoyle Integration Badge
Requirement: The scout must locate Bartholomew upon his church roof perch. The scout must sit perfectly still, maintaining unbroken eye contact with the stone guardian for three consecutive hours.
Complication: You may not blink. You may not eat. You must achieve a state of complete geological Zen. If Barty Jr. attempts to show you his pet rock collection during this time, you must acknowledge the rocks respectfully without breaking formation.
3. Hostile Wardrobe Resistance Badge
Requirement: This is a protest badge. It is awarded to any scout who successfully prevents Esca Tyrell from forcing another member of this pack into wearing beige, knee-length khaki shorts.
Complication: Force may be necessary. Arson is permitted if authorized by Martin Sanchez. We will not allow the Sire of the Scourge of the Carpathians to turn this pack into an advertisement for a country club golf tournament.
The wearing of Tactical shorts is an exception. For the Troop!
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
For Future Scouts:
Always carry a well-sharpened knife. A keen blade is the mark of a prepared scout, and it is very useful for carving stakes out of seasoned oak.
Never trust a vampire who willfully wears khaki shorts. They are either being mind-controlled by a powerful, sociopathic sire, or they simply have terrible, irredeemable taste in clothing. Both are dangerous.
The pack is family. You protect it. You protect each other. And always, always protect the pack mascot (Lucas Cooper), even when he is actively filming highly sensitive, classified tactical operations without your consent for his TikTok followers. He is annoying, but he is ours.
For Scoutmaster Andy:
Scoutmaster Andy, you are doing a good job. You grade our arts and crafts fairly. You teach us how to sharpen our bevels. You do not patronize us.
The pack is proud of you. Esca Tyrell will not win. His glass house is structurally vulnerable to chewing gum, and his fashion sense is a relic of a bygone era. You will survive him. You will thrive. And eventually, you will stop wearing khaki shorts.
The Sanchez triplets have spoken.
---
Andy sat at the picnic table, the cool autumn wind rustling the pages of the sticky, Modge-Podged binder. He read the final lines left by the triplets, his pale eyes tracing the neat, block letters.
He had spent three centuries running. He had spent three centuries believing he was an isolated, cursed monster, hunted by his past and doomed to a solitary, ash-filled future. Esca had done everything in his vast, ancient power to reinforce that belief—to make Andy feel small, dependent, and utterly alone.
But as Andy looked out across the clearing, watching the twelve werewolf pups methodically securing the perimeter, watching Declan Draven helping Ronan carry the cooler, and watching Lucas Cooper arguing loudly with a tree stump, something deep within his dead chest shifted.
He wasn't alone.
He was the Scoutmaster of a paramilitary strike force of twelve-year-olds who fully intended to take down a two-thousand-year-old billionaire using chewing gum and whittled oak.
Andy slowly closed the Scout's Guide to Vampire Hunting. He rested his hand on the macaroni-crusted cover, a genuine, warm, and entirely un-brooding smile spreading across his face.
"Operation Shattered Glass," Andy murmured to himself, the ancient warlord fully reawakening beneath the stifling khaki uniform. "I suppose I should authorize Timmy's chewing gum budget."
He stood up from the picnic table, tucking the manual safely under his arm, and walked out to join his pack.
