An Advent Calendar - Prologue. Prologue

Prologue

Aditus

One nice, warm, and sunny September afternoon, I thought about Christmas, or rather of the time before Christmas: all those preparations, the cooking, the baking, kissing under the mistletoe, reading special stories, or poems, writing cards to friends and family…and of course the Advent calendar. I loved those when I was a kid. A sweet chocolaty treat every morning before I went to school. That was when I had the idea of putting together a calendar for you. Twenty-four doors are a bit much for one person, so I invited two partners in crime: Cole Matthews and Valkyrie. We will give you a little bit of everything I mentioned above and hope you have as much fun enjoying the treats as we had creating them.

Cole Matthews

When I was a little boy, every year my Sunday school teacher would give me a paper box with tiny little paper doors each numbered one through twenty-four. Above these rows of numbers was a title that always thrilled me. It said, "Countdown to Christmas." I remember excitedly running into the kitchen each morning when my mother would let me rip open a new door. Behind the little tab inside each tiny box was a treat of some kind. Most of the time it was a little Bible verse or saying along with a piece of candy. A few of these miniature treasure compartments contained a tiny toy. Regardless, it made the weeks leading up to Christmas a very special time for a very impatient little boy. When Aditus came up with this idea, it thrilled me. I figured I could be part of making the lead up to Christmas and the winter holidays a treat for others as well. I hope you like the little surprises for the Advent calendar we've prepared for you.

Valkyrie

One of my favorite holiday traditions used to begin well before Christmas. Every Thanksgiving I looked forward to receiving two things after we finished dessert—a Christmas ornament from my grandma, and an Advent calendar from my mom. She usually ordered them from Current and my favorites were the ones that told the Christmas story. I remember a couple of years my brother and I were lucky enough to receive calendars that contained chocolate goodies behind the paper doors. It took a lot of self-control to not open every door at once! When Aditus contacted me regarding doing an Advent calendar for GA, I was immediately excited. For me, the holidays no longer contain the joy and wonder they did when I was younger, but tend to serve more as a reminder of things that I’ve lost or things that I’ve never had. This project was a way for me to re-focus on the positive aspects of the season and relive fond memories. I hope opening each door brings you the same joy we experienced while completing this project.

And so it begins, counting down one day at a time...

Thank you Adi, Cole and Val. This is going to be fun and best of all, it's zero calories! :D

Great idea for a joint project. Since we're revealing our personal experiences with them, I'll say Advent Calendars were somewhat rare where I was growing up. Our Catholic school always had large ones in every room though, and I enjoyed the process of the teacher opening a new door in the morning and looking at each message for the day in every classroom.

At some point when I was around 10 or 11, Crestwood Plaza (a large and wonderful shopping center) renovated its lower level and a high-class, specialty foods company opened. It was then that my mom bought me my first Advent Calendar – a colorful one imported from Germany. I do think there was a piece of foil-wrapped chocolate behind each door. It hung proudly on my closet door that year.

Now, on to Day One. Cheers

I had never heard of an Advent calendar until Cole wrote his beautifully-moving story Advent three years ago today. But even then, I didn't actually think of the concept of the calendar. That changed when Addy sent me an Advent calendar with chocolate behind every little door! That was a treat! :) And it was German chocolate!! :D Of course, since I didn't celebrate Christmas, I felt I could open as many little doors as I wanted to and not get into trouble! :D So of course, I did! I opened them all within the first three days of receiving the calendar!! :P

I'm really looking forward to reading Addy's and Val's stories again, and reading Cole's for the first time. :D

Thank you for sharing you're own Advent Calendar memory with us, AC!

This really is a joined project, with emphasize on 'joined'. It was an amazing experience, and let's just say inspiring for more to come.

Ha! I so knew you would open the doors within a few days, lol. But there was a nice picture on the outside, which you could enjoy a little longer.

Thank you for being a part of the team, Lisa! *hug*
