Path Forward - 13. Chapter 13

Open my heart, Lord

by Brandon J. Haines

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can know Your love…
with a humble spirit.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can see Heaven
when it’s my time—
not because I deserve it,
but because You are merciful.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can see You—
with the eyes You awaken in me.
Not with earthly sight,
but with the vision that comes
from a heart made pure
by Your mercy.
Not because I am worthy,
but because You choose to reveal
what only a humble heart can see.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can see
and feel
Your mercy—
not with earthly senses alone,
but with the spirit
You awaken in me.
Let my heart be soft enough
to recognize Your presence,
and humble enough to receive
what You reveal in love.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can hear You say,
“Well done…
my faithful servant.”
Words spoken not to the proud,
but to the ones who walked gently
in Your grace.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can thank Jesus
in person
for His sacrifice—
a gift I could never earn,
only receive
with reverence.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can tell Him
His sacrifice was not in vain—
and say it with the humility
of someone saved
by grace alone.

Open my heart, Lord…
so I can receive the key
in humbleness—
the key to the mansion in Heaven
when it’s my time.
Because a true Christian
does not demand it…
but waits…
until You know
they are ready
to receive what You give
in Your perfect timing.

I came up with the title of this piece while I was praying when I was getting ready to take my nightly dose of insulin.
