Path Forward - 27. Silent Night in Oberndorf

Silent Night in Oberndorf
By Brandon Haines

Through a night of bitter winter,
when the river froze in silence
and the world felt worn from sorrow,
a small church gathered in the dim light of a single candle.

The organ slept in bitter decay,
its voice lost to the cold,
yet something warmer than fire itself
waited quietly in the rafters.

Outside the wind carried nothing but bitter unrest,
the memory of war,
the ache of hunger,
the weight of a world still trembling.

But inside…
inside was a warmth that no hearth could ever produce,
a hush no human hand could craft,
a peace that settled like falling snow
over every tired and weary soul

When their voices rose,
gentle as candlelight,
the room became holy ground—
not because of the song,
but because of the Presence of the Most High, the Emmanuel
that wrapped itself around the people
like a blanket of grace.

.

Emmanuel.
God with us.
In a village worn thin by suffering,
in a church small enough to miss on a map,
He arrived in the melody
of two faithful hearts
and a guitar.

And the cold outside
did not matter anymore.
Because warmth had entered the world—
the kind that does not fade,
the kind that does not fail,
the kind that still rises every time “Silent Night” is sung by anyone who believes
peace can be born in the darkest places
