Path Forward - 25. For the Ones Who Walk Through the Dark

For the Ones Who Walk Through the Dark
By Brandon Haines

This is for the ones who move like echoes
through the corridors of their own days,
souls pressed thin by silence,
hearts beating softly
as if afraid the world might hear them
and still turn away.

For the ones who sit in dim rooms
where the shadows feel familiar,
where the quiet hum of loneliness
becomes a kind of companion—
not chosen but known.
For the ones who wonder
when they became invisible
even to themselves.

For the ones who carry memories
that flicker like dying candles,
each flame a moment they wish
they could step back into—
not to change it,
but just to feel seen again.
For the ones who walk through their past
like a house with too many locked doors.

For the ones who speak softly

because loudness feels dangerous,
who swallow their own hurt in a bottle
so the world won’t mistake it
for need.
For the ones who learned
that asking for comfort
sometimes hurts more…
than staying silent.

For the ones who lie awake
listening to the hum of appliances
just to prove the world is still turning,
who stare at ceilings
and wonder if anyone would notice
if the spark inside them
finally slipped away
without a sound.

For the ones who feel their own name
slipping from their hands,
as if identity were a fragile thing
that loneliness could erode.
For the ones who fear
they are becoming a ghost
in the story they were meant to live.

But even the darkest night
keeps a small place for dawn.
Even the loneliest heart remembers how to reach.
There is a hand meant for yours,
somewhere beyond the horizon
you thought you’d never cross.
Light is patient—
it waits for you
even when you cannot wait for yourself.

And you—
you are not fading.
You are not forgotten.
You are a quiet miracle
still learning how to rise.
Hope has been trailing you
like a gentle presence,
following every step,
waiting for the moment
you finally turn around
and let it in.

There is a future
that has already begun whispering your name,
softly, steadily,
like a promise you haven’t heard yet.
You are allowed to walk toward it
at your own pace,
with trembling hands
and a heart still healing.

And when you do,
the world will not turn away.
It will open—
slowly, maybe,
but surely—
because even the ones who walk through the dark
carry a spark the night cannot kibbah.
You are that spark.
