2021 - Fall - An Unconventional Gift Entry

The Truest Gift - 1. The Truest Gift

He stood out while I stayed in

He fought while I hid

He demanded the right to be

I kept the secret that was me

He said “I am what I am and deal with it’

I said ‘No! I’m not like that’

I watched him from afar as he dared to be

He held out his arms and said come in

I took a step and said it out loud, buy only to me

He smiled and said ‘One step at a time’

I walk in his shadow

Protected from the world

I never met him, but I didn’t care

He gave the courage to start to be

He blazed the trail for me to follow

I followed behind gaining confidence in every stride

He gave me the courage to be myself

The truest gift I ever received

A thought provoking piece that i think many of us can relate to, I'm sure we all had someone who gave us the courage to face some aspect of life.

Isn't it amazing how some people can go through life not giving a damn about what others think of them and can just be themself, while others hid it and are afraid to let their true self show.  A very special gift indeed is showing someone how to be comfortable in his own skin.  Well done.

I see this poem in two ways... the first is as differing perspectives/aspects of the same person as they mature and find the confidence to be themselves.  The second is that they are two different people, one who inspires the other to have the courage to be true to themselves and not care what others think.  The great thing about poetry is how it's open to different interpretations, and this poem made me think.  Thank you for sharing it with us and participating in the anthology!

Having lived during a time of great social changes, I view this poem as a tribute to the many human beings that forced others to change how the believed and acted.  These were the men and women that stood up and let others know they would not be defined by stereotypes, or made demons by bigoted religious beliefs.  In standing up for themselves they stood up for me.  By standing up to hate, they protected me.  By giving me a model, they showed me how I could become.  This is a lovely poem in their honour.  Thanks
