Love Letters To Nobody - 2. Chapter 2

Hey guys. Thanks so much for the reviews on the last chapter. I really appreciate all the feedback. Sometimes, I forget that not everyone lives inside my head. I've gone back and edited some of the grammar mistakes I made. I've also elaborated a little more on the setting and tried to make the dialogue more proper. I do hope that it hasn't lost the 'poetic' quality that so many of you liked. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. Keep the comments coming.

A crackle.

The cone of light focused on my two-bit study table, illuminating the knick-knacks splayed across its surface. My laptop sat unfolded, glaring at me with its blue light.

I trained my eyes back onto the words that seemed to litter the page of the book that was currently propped open with one hand, its contents seemingly less interesting with each passing moment. I sat my now bland piece of literature down and let myself drown in my turbulent thoughts.

A crackle.

My room came tumbling into focus once more. I noticed an abused slip of paper in my hand being methodically creased over and over again: a fold in half, then half of that, and half of that too. I unfurled it to reveal the wrinkled surface, stained with coffee in the corner, the material thin from wear, its edges frayed, but the transcription no less bold.

I sighed as I picked up my phone.

A crackle.

Scrunched up in my fist, I aimed for the wastepaper basket. A smile crept across my lips as the tiny ball dropped into the bin. I picked my phone up and propped my head against the headboard.

Nice! Love the poetic feel that mixes well with the prose type writing. One thing I was kind of confused on though was the crackling. Does paper really crackle? When I think of crackling I think of snapping and popping, like embers in a fire. But that could just be me. Looking forward to more! :)

well.... crackle was the best description to me when I think of paper getting scrunched up. thank you for your feedback though. :)

I'm glad you're keeping going with these little prose-poems. It's so lovely to see something different and imaginative. I also think pieces like this are a great way to develop writing skills in general - like an artist practising her sketching before tackling a big canvas. That said, they also stand up as finished pieces on their own. Hope you publish plenty more.

Thanks so much for the praise. I guess these chapters were basically what you said. I wanted some interconnectivity because I'm a real sappy romantic at heart. But I don't think I'm ready to cope with the commitment of having a full length novel/short. Short essays like this are probably the most I can commit to right now. Glad you're enjoying them!

I really like your descriptions. Succinct and very clear, adding a life to these inanimate objects, whether it's the glaring laptop or the littered words on the books.

 

Like Carringtonrj said, poetic prose isn't so common. But your snippets do have lots of potential and are very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :)
