Pope Francis is Right

Pope Francis was right to name the atrocities committed by the Turks against the Armenians what they are, genocide. The Turkish ambassador to the Vatican flapped his wings and flew away in protest. Hey, if Turkey wants to act like a turkey, so be it. The fact remains that Christian blood has been on Muslim hands for the past hundred-odd years, and no amount of white-washing is going to get that stain off.

I like Pope Francis, even though he disagrees with me on a lot of things and even though I'm not Catholic. He at least has the minimal amount of courage required to say things that are not only true but glaringly obvious. I don't really expect that much of him, because he has to play the part of the titular head of a very conservative institution resistant to any and all change. But for a Pope, he's pretty good, about as good as I've seen in all my years.

Genocide is an atrocity that has happened too often in human history, including the last couple of hundred years during so-called civilized times.

Wars, insurrections, riots, and prejudice have all been excuses for genocide and I don't think anyone's religion or culture is particularly guilt free.

But it is a sin against humanity and sometimes we need to be reminded of that......

I have seen this in the news, and it's true that Turkey wants to separate itself from it's past.  It's also a fact that true Muslims do not believe in or practice murder.  Islam isn't about killing and they don't promote the murder of infidels.  This fact is lost sometimes because of the Muslim extremists in the news.

It's also important to remember that the Turkish murder of Armenians occurred under the Ottoman Empire about 100 years ago.  I think that the problems that exist today need to be given more thought than the things that happened before any of us were even here.  While history has it's place, there needs to be some objective thought about how it's used.

It's also important to recognize that Pope Francis didn't use the word genocide as a matter of choice, but was simply quoting a declaration made by Pope John Paul II and the Armenian church.

The Armenian massacre was a tragedy, but there is nothing of any value to be gained by rubbing it in the face of the Turkish people today, who had nothing to do with events 100 years ago.  The world doesn't need to perpetuate historical hatred, it needs to build a means to peace and compassion.

Pagans slaughtered Christians, Christians slaughtered Muslims, Muslims slaughtered Christians, Christians slaughtered Jews.

What's the difference?

ALL those religions have blood on their hands. The Ottoman Empire is gone, it's not fair to blame the current Turkish government for the misdeeds of their predecessors. However, the Vatican is still around. and Pope Francis is its leader. I think if anyone can be accused of genocide it's him, and those he represents.
