Some Things To Come

Congratulations to everyone with Partners, who are getting ready to be hitched across all 50 States and US territories. This is a momentous victory, but one that must be tempered by rationalism. I will just give a quick breakdown on what the current landscape looks like.

Read if you want to hear politics and some pointed opinions.

Religious conservatives are wounded, but not beaten. Four decades of culture warriors will not easily be beaten back, especially if they believe they have their authority from God himself. A cornered animal is the most dangerous, so be wary of nutcases in the next few years; even if they can't amass wide political or social power as they are waning in support, they can try to form alliances and coalitions to maintain a small vestige of influence.

Two important things to remember about this Supreme Court ruling

1. It comes right after the Obamacare/ACA ruling (King v. Burwell, 6/25/2015) that basically has pushed the buttons of most conservatives, Tea Partiers, and the like into war mode. What can happen if conservative strategists choose to is to link the two decisions together as a pattern of "big government" intrusion on public matters.

Gay rights activists must begin planning contingencies ASAP to counter this possibility and point to the fact that Chief Justice John Roberts, a George W. Bush nominee, was instrumental in the Obamacare ruling, but was against the Same Sex Marriage ruling in the dissenting opinions on similar paradoxical grounds. My argument would be to point the fingers back at conservative factions to break any possibility of aligning both results into one overlapping issue that could be used in potential 2016 electoral strategies. No one reading this blog would want to see a rejuevenated Social Conservative faction in power.

2. A major issue is coming, "religious liberty" under the 1st amendment will be used to counter the availability of same sex marriage venues. As long as religious authority rejects the legitimacy of same sex marriage, its adherents may use their freedom to deny services, even as far as purposefully forcing undue strain on the same sex couples by forming cabals against them. Since most marriage professionals perform their services at religious venues, religious authorities have influence to make these professionals accede to their wishes to deny services as a term of service.

My counter to that is simple: debate the merits of religion in daily lives: when is religious practice itself a freedom and when is it an obstacle to normal continuation of activities. The highest freedoms of all are "life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. If a terrorist bombs an event for their religion, it is easy to see the devestation and its inherent encroachment on the freedoms of others for "personal faith". There is inherently no difference between an Islamic extremist bombing an event like the Boston Marathon versus a Christian extremist bombing an abortion clinic; so why is there a difference between the illegality of Islamic Sharia law and the legality of Judeo-Christian religious inspired denial of service.

Now, onto some good old fashioned story items:

I am writing something new called Blue Rose, the idea is inspired by the variations of Blue Roses in Western and Eastern Mythology. Naturally, Blue Roses cannot exist without color dying or genetic engineering (really cool thing I learned about how Blue Roses can be created that got me thinking). They are famous in German and French literature, along with Chinese mythology as symbols of "True Love", "Unfulfilled Potential", and "Dreams". These are all known themes within LGBT fiction, but it has not been approached literally as far as I know from authors with source material inspiration.

Here read the wiki for some ideas on my inspiration: Blue Rose and German Blue Flower

This story will be part of my Causality Universe, but will feature new characters and a few interesting main character introductions.

Most importantly, I love the title, Blue Rose. It's absolutely beautiful.

Of less aesthetic interest, but more political, in this state, there will be legal challenges to the Supreme Court ruling for same-sex marriage. The governor of Texas has notified state agencies that any state employee refusing to honor same-sex marriage on religious grounds should be supported, not censured. He also made it clear that state agencies do not have to offer benefits to same-sex married partners that they offer to opposite-sex married partners. Since the governor appoints the heads of the agencies, this carries some weight, real and implied.

The state attorney general also opposes same-sex marriage, and is not requiring that county clerks issue marriage licenses. A number of counties are doing so anyway.

These two don't represent attitudes statewide, but they and their kind will continue to impede, obfuscate, and delay implementation of the actual and implied meaning of the Supreme Court decision. The arc of civil rights is long, and continues today.

Of course, once an employer finds out a worker is gay in any right-to-work state, the worker can be fired, even after benefits for gay spouses are settled in the courts. Lodging can still be denied. Loans and leases are still sensitive.

Although there will be some excluded venue issues (meaning some churches), some other churches are opening their doors wide, and outdoor ceremonies should be popular, since so many gays have turned away from churches, due to homophobia.

But today, we celebrate a major victory.

Obamacare could be rolled back, same sex marriage can't. It's a one-way trip :) All those nice folks who comprise such a big chunk of American society will be screaming and cussing and plotting, and they will surely try every legal trick in the book but ultimately the only thing their efforts will do is fatten the bank accounts of charlatan lawyers who if they were honest / didn't share the same pitiful and bigoted outlook on life would just tell their clients it's a busted flush :D
