Now that's a word I had never heard of before! Then again, my knowledge on golf terms is limited to ducking when I hear "Fore!"

I have a golf outing outlined in connection with a wedding, and I'm so using sclaff to describe one of my character's play.

Word nerd first. Sclaff is Scottish for a slap, and is probably an onomatopoeia.  Since Scottish golfers thought the sound of a club scraping the ground sounded similar, they used the word for that kind of shot. First known use of the word as a golf term was in 1893.

I think it would be interesting to use in literature also.  Example:

His biting words and rude gestures were sclaffing a hole big enough to bury my love for him.

(Or maybe a word to describe the sound of Arnold Horshack's laugh on "Welcome Back, Kotter.")
