I've both looked askance at others and had others look askance at me.  Go figure.

The word first came into use in the late 16th century of unknown origin, although it may have originated from the Old French a escone (hidden), the Italian word a scancio (obliquely or slantingly), or from the word askew (not in a straight or level position).
