William Perkin made a fortune out of his accident experimenting with coal tar. He called the color Lyrian purple, but the French christened it mauve.

Queen Victoria popularized the color mauve in England when she wore a garment of that color to Princess Victoria's wedding in 1856.

It was a healthier color than the greens dyed with arsenic compounds.
