I wish I was aware of this word many years ago, because there was a woman I would have liked to call a termagant.  It would have fit her well and driven her crazy because she wouldn't have known what I was talking about.  

Karen is the ultimate termagant: super-entitled and perpetually outraged when things don't go her way.

I heard the word termagant in high school in connection with Kate in ‘The Taming of the Shrew’. I’m not Shakespearean, but it seems the word appears in the play. There was no license to Karen back then, so the rare times such behavior happened in public, there was just a lot of people muttering ‘What a bitch!’
