Cistern, Texas, is a small (pop. 75, 2000 census) unincorporated community in Fayette County. It is located between Flatonia and Smithville on Texas State Highway 95 at the junction of Farm to Market Road 2237 from Muldoon. The community got its name from the number of cisterns used for drinkable water due to the high mineral content of well water.

I guess that during the time period in which the town was named it was probably the best choice, either Cistern, Texas or Outhouse, Texas.  😈 🤪

The difference between a cistern and a well is that a cisterns main function is to collect rainwater, while a well taps into a underground source of water...

Back when I was in school, a kid deer hunting fell into a cistern. It had been used before the Civil War on a plantation that was burned to the ground. It was covered, but over the years, it was forgotten, and the lumber used rotted away. The boy was able to climb out with help, but it was a very, scary incident.
