In other meanings, the moon has a dichotomy when it's half illuminated.

When there are two ancestral lines which are separate and divergent, this is a dichotomy.

When I woke up this morning and saw The Word of the Day, I experienced deja vu, since we had talked about this yesterday.  But then I realized we merely talked about its use, not the meaning, so a 👍 to @Myr.

I think @drpaladin my have mentioned this yesterday, but dichotomy comes from the Greek, dikhotomia, were dikho means 'in to, or apart', and tomia means 'cutting'.

The modern Southerner is a bizarre dichotomy: on the one hand, he's a truck driving, deer hunting, beer swilling redneck and on the other, he is an educated, modern man who barbecues on Saturdays and worships in the Holy Church of Southeastern Conference football.

I can't wrap my head around this question... Can irony be used to describe a dichotomy?
