According to Greek legend, whoever could untie the Gordian Knot, a complexly intertwined rope securing an oxcart, was destined to rule Asia. Alexander the Great untied it by cleaving it into with his sword.

He may have used the sword but he may have pulled the lynchpin and removed the yoke, finding the ends and undoing the knot.

I wasn't there so can't say which action actually happened...
