Now I can say this is a word I've never used, and don't believe I've ever heard or seen it before. In fact I'm not sure I can say it without getting tongue tied :)

Fortunately here in Australia an otolaryngologist is usually simply called an ear, nose, and throat specialist, or even more conveniently, an ENT specialist.

As a medical specialty it dates back to the 19th century, when doctors recognized that the head and neck contained a series of interconnected systems.

The word "otolaryngologist"

comes from the Greek words otos (ear), rhino (nose), laryngo (windpipe), and logos (science). The term "otorhinolaryngology" is the full word, but "otolaryngology" is the shorter, more commonly used form.
