Again we have a word with Latin roots. We often forget how much of modern English originated from Latin, but then the Romans occupied Britain for a very long time.

Back to that notorious word, "notorious". It crops up in the Medieval Latin notorius, itself from Late Latin notorium meaning "information, indictment", and formed from the Latin verb noscere, "to come to know". First recorded with it's current meaning in 1534.

Notorious doesn't always have to be a bad quality.  Did you forget that Don Juan was notorious for being a prolific lover?  Or that Bella Lugosi was notorious for his portrayal of Dracula, the Wolfman, and other unusual characters on the movie screen?
