It may seem strange that the etymology of sneer would include the Old English 'fnǣran', especially as they seem to start with different sounds, |s|for sneer and |f| for 'fnǣran'. However the "f" is actually a later substitution for the 'long s' which was used in medieval manuscripts and looks like an elongated elaborate lower case 'f'. I know it totally confused me when I first came across it as a student.

All this means is that the 'f' in 'fnǣran' is pronounced as |s|.
