Amiss is probably from Old Norse á mis ‘so as to miss’, from á ‘on’ + mis (related to miss). 

The word "amiss" was first used in the English language during the Middle English period (1150-1500), specifically in the 13th century.  It originated from the Middle English word "amis."  The Oxford English Dictionary's earliest evidence for the word comes from approximately 1275, appearing in the text "The Owl and the Nightingale".   The word initially meant "off the mark" or "out of order" before evolving to its current meaning of something being wrong or improper.
