Effulgent means shining brightly, brilliantly radiant, or glowing as if emitting a dazzling light.  The English adjective comes from the Latin word effulgent- (stem of effulgēns), which is the present participle of the verb effulgēre.  Effulgēre combines two parts: the prefix ex- (assimilated to ef-), meaning "out" or "forth" and the root word fulgēre, meaning "to shine, flash, or glitter". 

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the adjective effulgent was first used in English in 1737 by Richard Glover, an English writer and politician.  The noun effulgence appeared slightly earlier in the mid-1600s (recorded in 1767 in the works of poet John Milton).

In storytelling, the word "effulgent" (meaning radiating light, brilliant, or shining resplendently) serves as a powerful literary tool to elevate descriptions, signal internal purity, and create instant visual contrast.  While casual conversation rarely uses it, the term carries a specific weight in prose that immediately alerts a reader to something extraordinary or divine.  
Here is how writers use effulgence to enhance a narrative: 

Externalizing the Devine or Supernatural:  
When a storyteller describes a character or object as effulgent, they are rarely talking about simple physical light. They are usually signaling holiness, magic, or cosmic power.  
The effect: It creates an immediate sense of awe. An "effulgent being" or an "effulgent sword" feels ancient, pure, and untouched by the grime of the mortal world.  

Revealing Internal Character Purity:  
Authors frequently use the word as a metaphor for a character's moral clarity, innocence, or profound joy.  
The effect: If a character's smile or spirit is described as effulgent, it tells the reader that their goodness is so intense it physically warms or alters the environment around them. It is the ultimate descriptor for an uncorrupted protagonist or a beacon of hope.  

Establishing Atmospheric Contrast:  
Because effulgence implies a brilliant, blinding radiance, it serves as the perfect foil to gothic, grimdark, or dystopian settings.  
The effect: Placing an effulgent object or entity into a dark, shadowy world instantly creates high visual and thematic contrast. It symbolizes a literal and figurative piercing of the darkness, raising the stakes for the narrative.

Elevating the Prose Tone:  
Word choice sets the register of a story. Using a rare, latinate word like "effulgent" instead of "bright" or "shiny" changes how the reader perceives the narrator.  
The effect: It shifts the tone toward the epic, mythic, or poetic. It slows the reader down, forcing them to visualize a light that is heavy, rich, and majestic rather than sharp or harsh.
